For real, if I ever manage to publish my kid’s adventure book and someone says let’s turn it into a cartoon/animated movie, I will law down the law. None of the animators can make any NSFW art of the underaged characters and I will sue a bitch who tries to draw porn of the kid characters. tuca and bertie is really the first adult cartoon that has nailed the ideal tone for the genre. it’s crude without being over-the-top. it’s realistic without being bleak and hopeless. it’s goofy in that good good cartoony way while still feeling refreshingly adult. its portrayals and discussion of tough shit like anxiety and misogyny and trauma don’t feel hamfisted or as though it was thrown in to emotionally throttle the audience. the whole show is really that mordecai and rigby/finn and jake kind of cartoon BRO dynamic but with WOMEN and for GROWN-UPS and it is amazing to see!!!!!! it’s so funny and unique!!!!! i would HIGHLY recommend!!!

Tuca & Bertie is the sort of adult cartoon that feels like it’s like other cartoons… except it’s better. I can make a whole list but I’ll just note here that it’s got that Bro feel minus misogyny and their Adult content isn’t raunchy.

I say that having watched BoJack Horseman. The difference is that BoJack is about mental health and cultural critique whereas Tuca & Bertie is about friendship and adulting. The former is cynical, the latter is indulgent. Both have merit. I just want more indulgence.

I will be as obnoxious as I need to be in order for more people to try this show because it’s so diverse and brilliantly written. We need more adult cartoons like Tuca & Bertie.

I didn’t realize this post would take off, and I’m not even sure how many of you will even see this. I want to address the fact that I wrote this post before watching the last three episodes. Those get much darker because they involve more direct topics of sexual harassment/assault. HOWEVER, by the end of it all, there’s still a feeling of hope and triumph in the face of trauma. No matter how dark Tuca & Bertie gets, it’s still far more optimistic and feel-good than Bojack, which covers similar problems with a much bleaker tone.
