That fucking DIY wheelchair post is going around again, and none of the people reblogging it are reblogging a version that talks about the risks of using homemade mobility aids that don't fit you properly - such as that they can make your pain worse or cause pressure sores that lead to terrible infections.

I did see a couple of additions about how cool and punk it is. I don't know, is getting sepsis punk?

you're absolutely right but arguably getting sepsis from the mobility aid you cobbled together, the one that's both the only thing thing letting you actually live life to the fullest extent possible and the thing that will kill you is the kind of thing that sounds like a really poetic way to go out

You are, moreover, dead in an incredibly painful, awful way.

Do you understand what infected bed sores and sepsis do to a person? Do you really? Do you understand how much pain they would be in? Do you understand how hard it would be to be their loved ones watching them the hospital as their organs shut down?

Do you understand how painful it'd be to be in a chair that's causing spinal damage for hours and hours every day?

Disabled people and their pain do not exist to be a poetic metaphor for your consumption. It's just suffering.

Can someone explain to me why calling this poetic was so appalling to so many people /genconfused (<-- disabled person)

I am not disabled so please take this with a bit of a grain of salt but in general a very common way disabled people as a whole are seen are as storytelling devices.

They are metaphors or examples or warnings or upfiting stories or tragedies. They are types and tropes and seen as characters rather than real living people.

Maybe in some technical sense it IS poetic in a way, but to reduce a persons life and existence into poetry or any other type of story is often seen as disrespectful. To YOU it is poetic because all you have to hear is a sentence or two of this persons death, to them and their family members there was no story; it was their real life they were living and now no longer get to live because of a horrible accident.

Overall it’s just kind of seen as insensitive and tone death, as if you’re reducing a person down to something so basic just for your own personal benefit or enjoyment (especially since in this case it seems that- intended effect or not- this ‘poetic death’ was commented on in order to downplay how awful and horrible a death like this would be and make it nicer to hear / think about).
