Fun Home by Bechdel
A book of work by a lesbian cartoon artist Alison Bechdel. A collection of memories and a story of her own from child to young adult. As a much relatable topic the coming out to parents or friends is hard. In this book she explains how she came out to her parents and what made it even worst was the lack of relationship with her father. Something so embedded in us we forget the struggle gay or straight. As she deals with one decision her dad puts up a front of his own as revealed that he is deeply in back of the closet gay man himself. Is is harder for a man to disclose than a women? Such toughness exist to put on a show in living one way that is not true to self. Just the title Fun Home brought such a absence to the real depression of the funeral home as the father presence was absent in the home for much of her childhood. The bold masculine figure of a father she felt wasn't there. She explain a story of while on a tour of the work she see this picture of a boy named Roy shirtless in bed she strongly believed was taken by her father. Which started her understanding that it wasn't a problem of only only her being gay but her father's interest in underage boys. It wasn't till the disclosure to her mom, Helen, about being a lesbian that the mom then fully explain of all the father's infidelities with young boys. Which she also seen him give a beer to. Right before her father's “suicide” , death, as teens age at the time she had came at same time the mom filed for divorce. All this stressed is what made it seem like a suicide even though I believe it wasn't confirmed. Gender identity is a issues many face of ages races and genders. What most important i think the fear of being accepted but I think the better thing is you accepting yourself.
