What's bigender, demiboy, and polysexual

Bigender is a gender identity which can be literally translated as ‘two genders’ or ‘double gender’. Bigender people experience exactly two gender identities, either simultaneously or varying between the two. These two gender identities could be male and female, but could also include non-binary identities.

A demiguy (also called a demiboy, demiman or demimale person) is a gender identity describing someone who partially, but not wholly, identifies as a man, boy or otherwise masculine, whatever their assigned gender at birth.

Polysexuality is the attraction to multiple genders. Bisexuality and pansexuality are forms of polysexuality. Polysexuality generally rejects the idea of a gender binary, the idea that there are only two genders (male and female), rather than a spectrum of genders.

Beyond Machismo: Toward New Masculinities

In this chapter, authors Hurtado and Sinha discuss how manhood is described by young Latino men. The authors mentioned Jimmy Santiago Baca’s memoir, which asked a series of men a question — “What does the word ‘manhood’ mean to you?” As such, the chapter then turns over to cite a Mexican Philosopher, Octavio Paz, who states that manhood should show no weakness nor emotion, as it cracks the manhood of each men. An interesting thing that I️ thought about while reading this chapter is that the men who were being interviewed always mentioned their class for some reason. This made me think about my life as a Latino male. Most of the time, I️ always encounter different Latino individuals who, for some reason, mention their social class when it is briefly mentioned. I️ think because it establishes some sort of connection with our people and neighbors around the world — that we are not the only ones who are struggling financially. Then that gave me another thing to think about, which is that being a Latino man means that you must work your ass off to support you family. When I️ look at my father who works day and night just to come home and pay the bills, he never complains nor does he ever show that he is tired. However, I️ am not afraid of showing no emotion. I️t may seem weird that I️ too can show my weaknesses but when I️ do, I️ always like to show my improvement on them. The chapter ultimately describes the manhood of being a Latino male, which highly establishes the idea that a man must show no emotion whatsoever and must be the bread winner for his family. Just by thinking about it, it’s kind of sad that many Latinos around the world struggle and put in effort to do the best they can, only because they’re subjected to do so. Even if you try to break being “Macho”, things will backfire at that person — almost like if it is inevitable.

Ok guys, so here’s the deal. You don’t have to like this pairing, you don’t have to like the characters and you don’t have to like the show. But can we all please take a moment to acknowledge how important this scene is to Star Trek. Star Trek is over 50 years old. It’s always prided itself on championing great causes and the rights of everyone regardless of gender or race. It was the fandom that launched a thousand ships. It was the fandom that made it ok to ship. It is the fandom that has battled for this moment for years.

This fandom had multiple episodes scrapped because of networks being scared off by LGBTI story lines. Those networks, when it once did have a lesbian kiss, played it off as an ‘It’s ok because she used to be a man’.

This fandom where the writers and two of the actors were actually banned from having too many scenes together because their portrayals of their characters were not ‘family friendly’ according to the network heads.

And now, Star Trek has given us this. A strong relationship which is not being used as a punchline.

So please, whatever your feelings are for the characters themselves and Discovery as a series, lets just acknowledge how important this is for Star Trek.
