come to think of it, thereāve been so many important cats in my life.
i met this one when she was about 5 weeks old. a lady from church had found her underneath her porch during a rainstorm, and she couldnāt keep her, so she came to my momās new house.
she was a tiny little black kitten, and i was immediately obsessed with her. i took care of her and doted on her, and didnāt let her leave my sight. my mom told me that, when she was a little girl, she had a black cat named āvelvetā, that she was equally as obsessed with. so i decided it was only fitting that i had my own velvet, too.
she was an incredible cat. i had her trained to follow the sound of my voice, and we would go on long walks through the woods together. she had the softest fur, and a meow like a freight train. she was so chatty! when she became a mother, she would only stay calm if i was there with her. sheād even decided to have her kittens in my bedroom closet.
at one point, sheād ended up with a small scar across the bridge of her nose. still have no idea how she got it, though.
aside from the visual similarity, there was one other commonality between my momās velvet, and my own.
my mom told me, āwhenever she would disappear, she would always manage to find her way back home. she would even follow us when we went on trips to visit family. she was just immune to getting lost.ā
and i thought, āwell, if i name this cat velvet, then sheāll never get lost, either.ā and for a while, this was true! sometimes she would be gone for a few days, and then turn up like nothing happened. she would disappear at night in the rain, and if i stood outside and called for her, she would come back into my open arms, ready to be dried off and cuddled.
she even hitchhiked a ride inside of my momās car bumper to church a few times! i would get to skip out of the service and sit in the lobby with her.
i was so sure, so certain, so assured that iād never lose her.
⦠one day, during a winter snowstorm, velvet had somehow gotten out of the house. i have no idea how. maybe my mom let her out during a smoke break? i searched outside in the woods for hours, calling for her, to the point iād nearly made myself sick.
i like to imagine that somewhere out there, she found a warm home to take shelter in. i want to believe that that wonderful little cat got to experience nothing but love and warmth.
