New Legislation and Policies Regarding Naloxone And Prescription Addiction New legislation in the state of Kentucky is also aimed to help lower the level of overdose deaths in the state. Not only are more people allowed access to Naloxone but addicts who receive life-saving measures are not being charged criminally after their revival. The state is also making it so that Naloxone is something that can be purchased directly from a pharmacy without a traditional prescription. Many pharmacist in the state have undergone training to make it so that they can provide this drug, however many have yet to reach an agreement with a local doctor to provide the medication without a prescription. Nationally the problem of heroin use is being noticed as well. The addiction problem is so widespread that even the White House has had to sit up and take notice. The White House is aiming to shift the mentality in the nation from punishing those who are fighting with this addiction to helping them seek t
Make Motivation Yours Motivation is one of the most important things you can conquer in your life. Successful people are people who are strongly motivated to meet their goals. You can find this success and motivation if you follow some simple steps. Step One: Accentuate the Positive Being positive is one of the key ways to remain motivated. If you let negativity in your life that negativity will eat away at your motivation. Instead surround yourself with a strong positive support group and be positive about yourself. Keep those things in your life that make you feel good about yourself and remind you why you are trying so hard to meet your goals. Step Two: Make Plans To-do lists can be invaluable. Making a plan for what you want to accomplish can be the difference in being successful and failing. If you know what you have to get done itâs easier to actually do it. It can also help to give you an idea that you might otherwise have overlooked. Step Three: Give Yourself Some Credit Tak
This is partially in response to the fact that many experts think that prescription painkillers are the primary gateway drug for those who make the next step to heroin usage. Some of what the new program aims to do is provide more transparency in the drug trafficking pattern nationwide. By expanding the information available to law enforcement it is more likely that they will be able to discover where some of the worst drugs are coming from. One new trend that is likely leading to an increase in overdose deaths is dealers cutting the heroin they sell with the extremely powerful painkiller Fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opiate painkiller that is legal, however, it is one of the most powerful painkillers available and generally only used to treat people who have been through an extensive surgical procedure and only used for short periods of time. Drug dealers are getting more creative, and have started mixing Fentanyl with heroin. They do this for a couple of reasons, for one it can cut their
Heroin is a growing epidemic level problem in the US. Heroin provides a cheaper and easier to obtain alternative for someone who is addicted to prescription painkillers. In Kentucky these opioid drugs have been causing a major problem for more than a decade. In 2014 alone there were over a thousand deaths as a result of an overdose of prescription drugs and heroin. These deaths are tragic and some of them may have been able to be avoided. One way that the state is trying to deal with this devastating problem is to expand the availability of a life-saving anti-drug Naloxone. Though some feel that the drug takes away one of the primary reasons that people enter treatment, a fear of dying, the state has decided to go forward with plans to make this something that is available to those who are connected with individuals who are at risk for overdosing. How Naloxone Works And How It Can Save The Lives Of Addicts Naloxone is a medication that is designed to counteract the dangerous and lif
Because for many their addiction was their primary coping mechanism itâs important to replace that with something healthy instead. No one thing works for everyone, thatâs why weâre giving you a fairly comprehensive list. Here are 5 deadly equations which played a cruel joke on the celebrities.
What compels a person to continue with a destructive behavior despite the obvious problems their behavior causes? It is well-known that we are the creatures of habits. Unfortunately, breaking free from addiction is not as easy as it may seem to some people. Think about the individuals who cannot get rid of some bad habits like nail-biting, fidgeting or procrastination. Of course, the consequences of those cannot be compared with the aftermaths of using drugs, but it does not mean that it is simple to stop doing something even if it brings undeniable harm. People with a strong willpower can have it broken when they deal with addictive substances. So what are some things not letting an addict leave the dependence on drugs in the past? Addiction Treatment Options
Many Choices Available
There are many choices available in the treatment of addiction. Some programs are outpatient, others are residential; some are conducted at a hospital, others at a private treatment center. Many use medications to help the patient deal with withdrawal symptoms and restore normal brain function; others rely more on alternative medicine. Most offer some type of counseling and aftercare treatment to help ensure continued success. Treatment plans in most programs will include detoxification, psychotherapy, counseling, and behavior modification. Which option is best for the individual depends on the details of their substance abuse history, their personality, and their financial resources.
Hospital setting
Some hospitals offer treatment for substance abuse. These programs are usually staffed by physicians and psychologists or therapists. Most of the staff involved is usually very familiar with treating addiction; many are specialists in the area. For many, hospital programs offer an affordable option for those that need inpatient treatment but who canât afford a private treatment center.
Private Treatment Center
Private treatment centers offer residential treatment of varying duration, usually in a facility that is independent of hospitals or other clinics. Most treatment centers are staffed by doctors and other specialists, and provide similar treatment to that offered in a hospital. However, the setting is a bit less clinical; the facilities in which the patients are housed are typically more comfortable, there are usually amenities such as phones, cable or satellite television, wifi internet access, and a variety of recreational activities. Some also offer financial assistance to patients who need it. As with hospital programs, treatment centers also offer highly structured treatment programs. One of the main differences, though, is in their use of community. In many treatment centers, the patients help each other with certain aspects of their recovery.
Outpatient Programs
Outpatient programs can be conducted at a hospital or other type of clinic, or in some cases, in other facilities as well. There are many versions of these programs, from a basic twelve-step approach used by organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and other similar groups, to family therapy used to help both the patient and their family. Because there are many types available, the patient should consider several and consider their needs before choosing a program. The patient or their family can also get referrals for these programs from their doctor.
Know your needs
Before making any decisions about treatment, the patient or their family should be aware of what their needs are. What is the personâs substance abuse history? How motivated are they to change? Are they willing to share their feelings and thoughts with others in group settings? How important are cost and location? Will they do better in a clinical setting or something more comfortable? How do they feel about the use of medications to aid in their recovery? These factors all influence what choices are available to the patient. Using the answers to these questions should help produce a list of options available, which can then be evaluated and a program can be chosen.

Why is it so Hard to Quit Drugs?
Addiction begins
While many people think of drug addiction as referring only to the abuse of illegal drugs, it can also encompass tobacco, alcohol, and legal drugs, both prescription and non prescription. Drug addiction is a more complex disease than it appears on the surface. To many, it may seem to be simply a lack of willpower or bad decision making. But in fact there is more to it than that.  For most people with a substance abuse problem, the initial decision to take drugs was voluntaryâŚthey tried the drug as a result of curiosity, or a desire to be âcoolâ or peer pressure. But for those who are dealing with an addiction to prescription medication, the problem may be the result of trying to deal with an increasing pain level or other physical problem. These people may not have even realized that they could get addicted to prescription medication. However the problem starts, the resulting addiction is similar, and they all can be equally destructive.
How does addiction work?
Drugs affect the brain primarily in one of two ways: either by imitating the brainâs neurotransmitters or by over-stimulating the reward center of the brain. The first type of drugs causes abnormal messages to be sent to the brain; the second kind causes surges of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure centers of the brain. These surges of dopamine cause the brain to reduce its sensitivity to it by reducing the number of receptors for dopamine. The result is that it takes a steadily increasing amount of the drug to induce the state of pleasure caused by the drug. Â This condition is called tolerance. It is this condition of tolerance, along with the bodyâs craving the euphoric state the drug induces- and the withdrawal symptoms that occur in the absence of the drug- that makes it so difficult for an addicted person to break their addiction.
Other affects
Aside from the effects mentioned above, drug abuse has other effects on the brain. Over time, drug use interferes with the personâs ability to learn. Drugs also affect decision making, judgment, memory and behavior control. Because of these impairments, a person with drug addiction will usually continue to seek drugs in spite of negative consequences he or she has suffered. Not only is the individualâs body and mind affected by addiction, other areas of their life are affected as well. Typically a person who is abusing drugs will begin to focus entirely on the drug. Their performance at school or work will suffer, often resulting in expulsion or being fired from the job. Relationships with friends and family will become more distant as the person withdraws from contact with others. They will frequently try to prevent others from entering their personal space. Usually their personal hygiene will diminish as their appearance becomes less important to them. Spending habits typically change as well, often causing them to steal money from others in their home or to use money designated for other purposes to purchase drugs.
Prevention is best
Because of the nature of drug addiction, it is better to prevent it than it is to treat it. Reaching people before they start using drugs, helping them understand at an early age the problems it can cause, is key to preventing this disease. Most communities now have a variety of outreach and education programs available, some of which start in elementary school. Many schools coordinate with the local police through the DARE program; others also teach about substance abuse prevention in their health or physical education classes.
