Fanfiction. Is. Valid.

I am so tired of fanfiction being compared to unpopular/controversial media as an insult. Fanfiction is capable of being good. I have read it and written it myself. Please stop generalizing fanfiction as being nothing but horny teenage fantasies and start treating it the same way as any other kind of writing. I can't count amount of times I have seen a shitty YouTube comments on a video criticizing a bad movie or TV show saying "Hurr durr this movie/show is like a bad fanfic" get way more likes and praise than it deserves. Sometimes they don't even need to add the 'bad' in there, they'll just compare a fanfic to something they don't like and that will get tons of upvotes.

I blame stuff like My Immortal and 50 Shades of Grey for the reason fanfiction in general has such a bad reputation regardless if whether a certain fanfic deserves to be hated or not. Or maybe it has something to do with the majority of fanfiction being written by women and teenage girls and those demographics being the most likely to say anything positive about a fanfic. Wouldn't be surprised, anything that's popular with the female gender has always been looked down upon and cruelly made fun of simply because there are more girls who like it then boys.

Fanfiction just seems to be hated on simply for existing. Of course there are some really bad ones which I have read myself, but not once did I assume that ALL fanfics were nothing but mindless, empty garbage and I especially never made fun of anyone for being a fanfic writer or reader (that'd be incredibly hypocritical if I did) even if they liked bad fanfics. I wish people would stop acting like every fanfic to ever exist is a poorly written piece of shit just because they read ONE fanfic that was like that.

Oh, if only those creepy fics about real people didn't exist, we fanfiction authors would be more respected and actually treated like human beings. No offense, but writing a fetish about a real person is incredibly weird and disrespectful, not to mention an invasion of privacy. Those are the the types of fanfic that I would scrutinize people for liking, because it just feels illegal and you're actually effecting a real life living human being's life who will be disgusted if they read it.

Maybe that's another reason why fanfiction is treated like an outcast on the internet. While it's a more valid reason than most 'reasons' people give for hating all fanfiction, I still wish that the generalizing would stop. I can't stand being lumped in with crazy weirdos just because we share the same hobby. Speaking of hobbies, we get taught not to insult people for having different interests and tastes than us, so why should fanfiction be an exception?
