Choose Freedom, Choose End of Life Choice

Passing the end of life choice bill is the morally correct thing to do. New Zealand is prided as a free country that acknowledges the individual, and we are all very privileged to live in such a progressive nation. Our current laws on euthanasia clash with this ideology however, as it does not value the freedom of the individual and the right for one’s choice. It puts the power in the hands of the medical system, ignorant of the patient’s suffering in the favour of bureaucracy.

As a progressive society we have achieved many important milestones including women’s right to vote, homosexual law reform, and environment and employment rights. We have proven ourselves to be legislatively liberal in many areas but in others such as the basic human right of dignity in death as well as in life, we have fallen short.

In places around the world where assisted dying is legal there has been:

no evidence of coercion of vulnerable people

no slippery slope into some uncontrolled abyss

It’s important to remember that:

palliative care is not always capable of relieving all suffering, all the time

people who help someone to die currently do so with no safeguards in place and with a real threat of prosecution

The passing of the end of life choice bill would allow for a progressive reform of an oppressive law. It would allow for the improvement of one’s individual freedom; the guarantee that one will have the choice over their own suffering. The life of a patient should be no one’s business but the patients’- they are at the hands of their own illness, and should have the choice when they feel it is time to move on. It is a decision that should be treated with respect, and empathy; one that the current approach does not allow for.
