One of the most useful realizations I have come to about people and relationships generally is this: when someone reveals an ugly part of themselves in response to something you said or did, the temptation is to make yourself the subject of that sentence. If I hadnāt said that. If I hadnāt done that. If I had just been different in that specific moment then none of this would have happened and they would still be here and everything would be fine.
No. What you actually did was hand them a situation that required them to show you who they are, and they did. The insult, the retaliation, the disappearing act, the ghosting, the cruelty, the punishment, whatever form it took. That was already inside them fully formed and patient, waiting for a moment of sufficient pressure to make itself known. People are not driven to their worst behavior by the specific trigger. If it wasnāt this it would have been something else, a different day, a different disagreement, a different version of you doing a slightly different thing, and the outcome would have looked essentially the same because the outcome was always going to be determined by their character and not by your conduct.
Or a life.
