how do they feel about living in sol city? have they always lived there or did they travel from another settlement? — kalla is from another settlement, and after escaping from prison in her home settlement, she tunneled underground all the way to sol city. she’s glad to be somewhere that isn’t familiar with her history but worried that they’ll eventually find out, and what the consequences of that might be. do they trust the council’s leadership? why or why not? — nope. then again, she doesn’t really trust anyone anymore, especially not people who have the power to have her thrown back in prison. if they chose their sector and profession, why did they make that choice? if they didn’t, why not? were they happy with their assignment or not? — kalla is actually working in her second assigned profession and sector. she was initially working in sector 8 as a construction worker, but was reassigned to sector 6 as a combat specialist after repeated, uh, demonstrations of her martial arts skills. (she beat up her coworkers when they pissed her off, and got reassigned because of it.) she's definitely much happier in her current assignment than her previous one. what’s one object that they always keep on their person? — there’s one specific knife she owns that she always carries. it’s the one she used to kill her older brother.

what is your character’s ability (or abilities)? — kalla can sense and manipulate minerals, in her case this only applies to those that adhere to the official geological definition of minerals; a naturally occurring solid that has a definite chemical composition and specific crystal structure. she can also manipulate rocks and soil, by virtue of those substances being composed of minerals. when it comes to sensing them, it’s like they have a magnetic pull that she can feel in her mind. getting into the actual ‘how does that work’ would require at least a college level understanding of chemistry, as well as quantum physics, so we’re not going to go there. are they gen I or gen II? — gen II what can your character do? what are their strengths? — honestly she can do a lot. she can move minerals and rocks, so she can haul big chunks of stone around and, if she’s pissed off, throw them at people, or she can pull minerals out of her surroundings to use in more nuanced ways. it’s possible for her to form crystals and gemstones this way, or she can do stuff like mineralizing organic materials in what’s basically instantaneous fossilization. metamorphosing rocks by stirring their minerals around is also an option, but that’s really just a party trick that doesn’t serve much of a practical purpose what can’t they do? what are their weaknesses? — she can’t do jack shit with metals, which a lot of people expect her to be able to do. it’s also much harder for her to control her abilities when she’s experiencing extreme emotional states, which is how she ended up losing the use of her right eye (accidentally mineralized it, oops) is there anything else you’d like to specify about them? — she passes for human quite well, although with her eye being in the state it is and the scarring around it she still draws a lot of attention that she really wishes she didn't

her parents' middle and only daughter, she was well loved from the very beginning of her life got along very well with her older brother but was constantly at odds with her younger brother, and this only got worse as the years went by had a strong interest in geology throughout her childhood and adolescence, so when she discovered her mutation in her late teens, she was stoked at 18 she was conscripted into the guard forces of her settlement, which was essentially the same as being drafted into the army except on a slightly smaller scale her aptitude for tactical thinking, ability to use her mutation both offensively and defensively, and "leadership skills" (read: willingness to beat your ass if she thinks you're out of line) saw her rising through the ranks quickly fell in love with one of her lieutenants when she was about 20, and they were together for a little more than two years before they hit a rough patch that changed the course of her life he and her younger brother planned and acted against her in an attempt to remove her from the picture due to jealousy and resentment that had festered quietly for years, at least on her brother's part that plan ended with both her brothers dead by her hand, their parents devastated beyond belief, her now-ex-boyfriend on the run, and kalla missing an eye and imprisoned for murder she spent just a few months in jail before escaping and, with nowhere in the city to hide and no one to turn to, she struck out for a settlement she knew to be within reasonable distance - close enough to actually reach, but far enough that no one would look for her there it took her almost three full months of tunneling and walking to make it to sol city she was initially assigned to sector 8 as part of a construction team, but her propensity for getting into fights landed her in hot water, and eventually ended up with her getting transferred to sector 6 when they realized her "talents" were being wasted
