VII. In time I found myself atop a cliff
A precipice oâer dark and churning seas
Tree roots clung to rock with waning grip
An air of change electrified the breeze
I looked on the horizon vast, unbroken
No defining line cleaved wind from waves
I sat in silence thinking words unspoken
Words of kings, on banners, and on graves
And as the sun began to set again
The fires of eventide lit up the clouds
And I was filled with gratitude for them
Ah, to be with radiant light endowed!
But all good things must end and all must change
So like a well-wound clock the moon did rise
And once again its glow was something strange
A greenish, pallid shroud across the skies
VI. I roused myself from slumber soft and deep
The melodies had ushered me to Nod
I wondered just how long Iâd been asleep
I found myself alone and thought it odd
No sign of the festivities remained
Just ashen coals and footsteps in the sand
Content to let it all go unexplained
I continued on my merry way as planned
V. I walked another mile beneath the moon Until from yonder clearing could I see A joyful sight and hear a mirthful tune A festival or fair it seemed to be The group of friends were small but lively souls They linked their arms and circled round a fire I watched them âtil the flame reduced to coals And listened to a sweetly lilting lyre
IV. Said I, âwhat ails you sir? âtis fine a day
The sun shines bright on all and all is wellâ
Said he, âmy sighs are heavy with dismay
For night will come and light, the dark repelâÂ
And as he shared his grievances with me
The moon did rise and glow a hue bizarreÂ
I left him there to brood and took my leave
For darkness has no sway when there are stars
III. I chose a path untrod, or so I thought
It wasnât long before a soul I saw
A man of stature clearly, but distraught
A duke perhaps, or else, a man of law
II. Constrained no more and longing then for purpose
I sought horizons gold and without end
