How to deal with having a bad teacher
Letâs be real, we all have that one teacher who literally has no idea what they are doing, does no preparation and makes lessons excruciatingly boring. Fear no more, hereâs how you can make the best out of your terrible teacher:

Since I consider myself a big sis to all of you, I have made a small list of academic and misc. tips to make college/university not suck as bad.
Academic
If you get distracted in large lecture halls, sit in the front row. I discovered in large classes that I was sometimes more focused on the girl in front of me being on facebook, than I was on the actual lecture. Sitting in the front is always a good idea. It is honestly the easiest tip I have for you.
RECORD YOUR LECTURES! How ever you decide to take notes, you can also record your lectures. I use notability to take notes and to record my lectures with. When reviewing before an exam, recordings are a lifesaver. Also just reviewing after class, it deff helps to clear up anything that was slightly unclear in your notes.
Dress comfy for class. Literally no one care what you wear to class. Donât feel like you haaaave to look cute, I understand wanting to look good to feel good for yourself but sometimes nike shorts are gonna be your best option.
Book group study rooms in the library. If your libraries on campus are anything like mine, theyâre always packed. BUUUUUT it is very likely that your library has a way to reserve library rooms, thus guaranteeing you a silent study place on campus. Book ahead for finals week!!
GOOGLE DOCS. Once you make a good study group, condense all of your notes together on a google doc shared between you all. Google docs and slides  are also amazing for group projects and presentations. Become familiar with both, they are your new best friends.
Misc.
Starbucks has a loyalty program, get on it. I worked as a barista and literally the gold card program starbucks has will safe you a ton. There are literally 10 Starbucks on my campus, you will become familiar with yours. Download the app and start collecting points now! Also a pro-tip, skip the lattes and frappuccinos. Drip coffee is the best option for you, it is cheaper, better for you, and has the most caffeine besides the iced coffee. Also, once youâre a loyalty member at starbucks, refills on all coffee and tea is FREE.Â
Keep snacks in your bag, itâs not rocket science. You get hungry, eat. The more protein, the better.Â
Easy way to talk to someone in class. Pull out a pack of gum. Has not changed from high school. Having âclass friendsâ is needed. Theyâre great for getting notes from if you miss class and for getting together to study with!
3 Study Methods You Should Use More Often
This was originally for an article writing assignment, but I thought âwhy not write something I can also post on my blog?â so here are three study methods that I havenât seen a lot of in the studyblr community but are definitely worth mentioning.
The Leitner System
Flash cards have remained one of the most popular ways to study. Some people use them to memorize vocabulary, remember answers to specific questions, or even associate dates with events. Although the use of flash cards is convenient, their effectiveness has been reduced due to most peopleâs habits of prioritizing each card equally and therefore spending too much time memorizing the information on them.
The Leitner System, created by a German popularizer of science named Sebastian Leitner, is a more efficient method of studying that implements the concept of spaced repetition. All the cards start off in one pile. You would first scan through these cards, then test yourself. Each card you answer correctly goes to a second pile, while those you answer incorrectly should be revised then placed at the bottom of the pile. When you review the cards in the second pile and get them correct, they will be promoted to a third pile. An incorrect card will always get demoted to the first pile, even if they had previously been promoted to the last pile.
The reason why this method is so effective is that you end up reviewing the first pile of cards more frequentlyâthe cards you donât know very well. Some people choose to review their Stack 1 cards every day, Stack 2 cards every other day, Stack 3 cards once every three days, and so on.
Once all your cards have been promoted to the highest box, study them thoroughly and then start over. The continuous revision trains your speed so that you may reach fluency, which allows you to recall the information faster.
Timed Memorization
The name tells it all: you memorize a certain text within a time limit, normally around five to ten minutes depending on your fluency and memorization abilities. When the timer starts, you begin memorizing. When time is up, you flip to the next page, even if you havenât finished the previous page yet. Continue until youâve gone through all your material.
Timed memorization helps you to discipline yourself because your brain thinks that thereâs no time for messing around; you have to do this here and now. Make sure to repeat the things you missed and revise everything frequently. This method is actually one of the most effective for cramming as it gives a better coverage than if you spend a whole half hour memorizing one subtopic.
The Memory Palace or Mind Palace
Sound familiar? In BBCâs Sherlock, the âhighly functioning sociopathâ uses this method to remember vital information and facts. A mind palace is a systematic arrangement of information, each detail corresponding to a specific object in a familiar place. To ensure that you really remember everything, the objects have to appear shocking and conspicuous.
Hereâs an example: if I wanted to memorize âcrimson, 11, delight, petrichor (the smell after rain)â, aside from imagining Amy Pond or the Doctor saying it, I would first choose a place, letâs say my school. Iâd imagine myself walking up to the front gate and seeing that the entire building has been painted the color of bloodâcrimson. The building would then rise as though it were lifted from the earth and crumble into rubble, controlled by Eleven, the character from Stranger Things. Now, since I canât really picture delight specifically, Iâd probably end up visualizing a colossal sign that simply reads âdelightâ posted in front of my school. As for petrichor, Iâd imagine curves rising out of the puddles on the asphalt after a rainy night, a visual representation of the smell of the rain. Of course, these visualizations have been created to suit my memory. (I wouldnât know if you watched Stranger Things.)
I used this method when memorizing case studies for geography, although I chose to visualize fictional places from television series and cartoons. Some people do opt to create artificial places, but these often become blurry and are easily forgotten.
As with any study method, repetition is vital to storing the information in your long-term memory. Visit your âpalaceâ as often as you can. Soon enough, youâll remember the data as well as you remember the place associated with the data.
So there you have it, three lesser known methods of studying that have proven to be immensely efficient. Now, there is no âcorrectâ way to study, but there are methods that can ease your learning process.
RARE STUDY TIPS
1. write down how much you study over time, then write down how you did on the quiz/test. this will help you see the amount of studying is nessecary for you to get a good grade and fully learn the material!!!
2. make your study space smell fresh, preferably of mint. mint helps you focus and stay sharp. other good smells would be lemon, etc.
3. after studying for a long amount of time, go exercise for ~30 min. shower, get dressed, etc then review the info you had just been studying! you should come back fresher, and your brain is able to remember the info even better!
4. donât always study in comfy/pj clothes. if you study a lot after school or classes, then itâs ok. but if all you plan on doing is studying for that day, for part of the day get dressed up! put on some business casual wear, thatâs cute yet functional and do your hair, etc. this will put you in a âget shit doneâ mode.
5. after studying a unit/chapter, record yourself explaining it, as if to a person whose never heard of it. this helps SO MUCH. one, explaining/teaching helps you learn so much better, and two, you have a little video to review just before the test!!
6. study on the floor. if you have a carpeted area in your home, spread out all study materials, a white board, etc and study! it helps so much because you are comfertable and everything is within reach. do this if you need a break from desk studying.
Mornings suck but
Grab a coffee, eat some nice food, take a warm, comfortable shower and listen to music. Make a list of things due today, make a list of non academic things to do today, complete these tasks. Make a list of things you will (most likely) have to do in the afternoon. Pick the âevening readingâ book in the morning. Brush your teeth. Remember to fill up your water bottle. Remember to bring your phone, wallet, keys and earphones. Remember to bring a sweater and tissues. Keep deodorant in your bag. Remember to put deodorant on in the morning. Check that your laptop is fully charged. If itâs not, put your charger in your bag. Bring a phone charger. These are the small reminders to keep you organised in the morning.
