These are pictures from Balance and Composure’s final show before they broke up after eleven years of being a band. This show occured on May 11, 2019 at the Fillmore in Philadelphia. It was so heartbreaking since it was the last show they will ever play but it was such an honor to be able to attend. The show was absolutely incredible and everything was set up perfectly. The lightwork was amazing. Their performance was everything I could ever have asked for. Their set was almost two hours long and full of select songs from their entire discrography. It was insanely sad but also inspiring to me because they have been such a strong influence in my art. Their music helped provide some inspiration in my capstone project and I could not thank them enough for everything they have done.

I think I’m done with my first recording! This will go along with the photo of my friend in the forest. I added bird sounds in the background to make it sound more nature-y! It’s a calm piece and it has good flow to it. My friend helped me record it!

I made a video for one of them! I don’t think I’m going to stick with the video idea because it’ll be confusing for the viewer. I think I’m going to stay with my original idea of having the playbar next to the photo when clicked on.

I have decided that I’m going to use a variety of sounds for my project! I am in the process of creating one with piano via the MIDI part on Garageband. This one is really cool! It’s a creepy one and I think I’m going to use it for one of the ones that give off a crazy vibe.

Downloaded some more sound effects to use in the recordings to spice it up. I think these will add to the effect and make everything sound coherent and boost the mood of the pieces a little. This one goes with the piano recording!!

I will then put together the website on Tuesday, after editing the recordings on Monday. We’re getting close to the finished product but also there’s not much time left!!! Stressed but it’s ok. This is my ticket from watching Us! I saw it on 4/5/19 at the Regal Theater in Silver Spring. The movie was really good but weird and creepy. Since I love horror movies, I liked it! It was not as good as Get Out in my opinion, which was also written and produced by Jordan Peele. This movie made me think a little about the message behind it and the twist at the end was incredibly surprising. The music for this movie was probably one of my favorite parts and it provided inspiration for my capstone project!

Reflection - Metacognition

I learned that I really have to plan ahead and stick to it. I can’t make excuses for not getting things done unless i’m actually swamped with work because I have learned that sometimes I’ll “take a break” and just not do anything. I always think that I have more time than I actually do. I learned that redoing things over and over is okay and normal! People will restart their projects a few times before the final project, and it’s okay and completely acceptable. It doesn’t have to be perfect on the first try.

I will try to keep this in mind and not stress about it not being perfect on the first try.

I think I will be using a guitar instead of a piano to record, because I can record it at either my apartment or my friend’s. I have a guitar and he has the cords to connect it to a computer, and I can just directly input it into garageband. This is unless I have time to record it at home over break!

This is what my website will look like. I think I’m going to use these 10 photos, unless I find some better ones. I actually think I might be done with photos and I will just use the ones I have already. I might go shoot sometime for fun (if I have time) and if some of them turn out better, I’ll use them. I’m a little behind right now because I got bombarded with work over this break that I should work on before I go out of town, and I had a lot of exams the last few weeks. I will be trying my best to stay on top of things!

I have ideas for the compositions!!! I’m going to record a demo for the first one when I return to school, and we will see how it goes! It is for the picture of my friend Megan where she has blue reflected off her and the background is red. I’m thinking of layering two melody lines to reflect the two colors. I was planning on recording it at home but unfortunately I ran out of time, so I think I will record the demos separately and then record all the final ones at once.

I think for ArtsFest, I will display the website on my laptop and have a section on the website for comments, like how it made people feel and what they thought about it. I considered having a pad of sticky notes and something to stick it on but I feel like the website section would be easier and I wouldn’t have to worry about losing anything. I also plan to have a section on my website for people to contact me for photoshoots or anything, like on a real portfolio website!! This would help me personally as a photographer and also I think it would add to the website and make it look professional.

I changed the header on the website from my name to the name of my project, Still Films. This is the feedback section that I was talking about in my last post! I think this will be the final feedback page, and I like how it looks. I’m working on bits and pieces of the website right now just to get them out of the way. Next, I plan on writing my bio and in it, my artist’s statement. These small details on the website will make my project seem more coherent and complete. Hopefully everything comes together!! I’m going to focus a little more on getting the recordings done, but unfortunately that will be the hard part since I have to make time to compose and practice it before recording it. I also have to arrange times that work for my friend’s schedule as well as mine and we’re both super busy. Hopefully we’ll have more recording time next week! This week is hectic since I have a paper and a lot of small assignments due Friday, but I am trying to come up with ideas for the next composition.

I saw Mat Kerekes perform (second pic) with Jetty Bones (first pic) as one of the openers. This show was on 3/8/2019 and took place at Songbyrd in DC. There was not a show title but it was to showcase his new album, “Ruby.” Mat Kerekes is an incredible and talented artist who is also the frontman for a band called Citizen, and I saw him perform his side/solo project. Jetty Bones is a solo project by Kelc Galluzzo, and she focuses on self expression and creating a safe space for everyone. This was such a fun concert because their individual solo works are so creative and are acoustic, and Mat’s acoustic work is beautiful, and Citizen’s full-band sets are generally heavier. It was interesting to see this change of pace! This inspired me to get more into writing my own songs, which is applicable to my Arts Scholars workshop.
