Forehead smooch.
Naoto proceeds to be overwhelmed by a bright pink flush and an abrupt loss for words.
Spooks is cool
youâre cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"I owe you an apology for how I acted. And ... Thank you. For all your help. We're lucky to have you."
â...Oh.â
His words catch Naoto off guard. It isnât that they are wrong, or inappropriate, or any of those things, but rather that she has forgotten, perhaps, what it means to be wanted. The police requested her help only to chase her away. The investigation team -- now her friends, she supposes -- disregarded her, made an attempt to welcome her in, then made as great a fool of her as anyone ever has.
...And then there was her dungeon, and everything that her shadow said and did and spewed hatefully back at her.
And now...Â
And now here they are. Naoto looks at Yu, clasping her hands together, and exhales into a shaky smile. âI do not recall the last time someone said such a kind thing to me,â she murmurs, quiet, âNor apologised. Isnât that strange? To be appreciated...â her smile solidifies, and she looks up from her feet up into Yuâs eyes. âThank you, senpai. I... I...â A flush spreads across her cheeks, but she forces the words out, quick, before she can stop herself. âI am grateful to be your friend. All of you. My life is becoming better for it.â
Is Kanji a himbo...
"Naoto-kun, are you okay?" He has a bouquet of flowers in one arm. "Congratulations on winning the pageant..."
âO-oh!â Naoto whirls around to face Narukami, face flushed red, palms outstretched before her. âIâm fine.â
She stares at him, quiet, brows furrowed and mouth open, and suddenly, she deflates, shoulders slumped and head hanging down. She is too used to tucking away her pain, shoving it down with the rest of her identity where she doesnât have to acknowledge it. âNo. Maybe not. Forgive me, senpai. I feel foolish. You and everyone else were all so brave, and I... Couldnât.â She frowns, lifting her head and adjusting her hat so it sits straight on her head. âIt feels wrong to win when all I did was run away. Somehow, it is easier to face the danger of being kidnapped than it is to show myself to the world...â
Naoto rubs her thumb on her other palm in a circle, glancing at the bouquet, then at Narukamiâs face. Mascara clings to his lashes, and under his eye is a slight smudge of eyeliner where the makeup was too stubborn to be wiped away. âWhat about you? Did you... Enjoy yourself?â She offers a smile, hesitant. âYou looked very confident on the stage. It was impressive.â
"You did a lot to make me feel welcome in a time where the concept of /friendship/ was still very unfamiliar. It... means a lot."
âAh ... Did I?â Their walk along the Samegawa is long despite the chill air that usually encourages him to hurry home as quickly as possible. Back then heâd seen Naotoâs Shadow and understood in a way that he hadnât with the others. Maybe it was because heâd spent the better part of a year at that point caring fiercely about all the people he promised not to get close to, learning to pick out insecurities and draw them out into the open so that he might try to soothe them, but ...Â
There was something about Naotoâs struggle back then. Thereâs something about it now. âWell ... Making friends is hard.â As he walks, Yu casts his eyes first out at the water, then to the ground a bit beyond her, as if he canât quite look her in the eyes just yet. âYou have to open yourself up, even when it means you might get hurt. Thatâs that hardest part.â Yu pauses, lips slightly apart, as if there was something else he was going to add. He turns his gaze forward again. âWhen I first came to Inaba, I promised that I wouldnât get close to anyone. Because of that.â His voice is impossibly soft, barely a whisper over the winter breeze. His eyes are lifted, focused on something far on the horizon. âThey saved me from that. Thatâs why I...â
It almost makes him ache to talk about himself. He shouldnât turn the focus on his own difficulties when Naoto is expressing such gratitude ... But when he looks at her, sheâs watching him, too. Steady. Interested. Encouraging. His chest tightens with an unfamiliar anxiety before he finishes, weaker than heâd like a leader to sound, âIsnât it great to have friends...?â
you ever just, like, think about naoto?
which tragic character
you are patroclus, from the iliad by homer, doomed by fate to be stuck in a love story that has no place on the battlefield. although you always have the best intentions, you have to realize you cannot save everyone. your unwavering loyalty means you often lose yourself in the process of putting others first. take a deep breath, remember who you are, and that you are deserving of the same love you try to put out. you are kind, you are strong, and you give and you give but it is never enough to protect those you love. in the end, it's not even enough to protect yourself.

âI tell myself I am okay being alone. I tend to forget that does not mean I am okay with being lonely.â

Latches on to Naoto from behind in a nice hug. Of course Nicole is just resting her head on her shoulder with her arms draped around her loosely. "Nao Nao, clear yer schedule. I'm takin' ya ou' fer yer day."
âW-What?â Naoto blinks, tensing up a moment before she relaxes into Nicoleâs grip. âNicole, really, you donât have to...â
...Will she ever get used to the notion that she has friends who love her? Who want to spoil her? Nicole has been Naotoâs friend for months and months and months, and it is still so very hard to bring herself to accept this kindness from her.
Breathe in. She does. Breathe out.Â
And finally, Naoto lets herself smile, touching a hand to one of Nicoleâs. âOkay. Where are we going?â
"HAPPYBIRTHDAY! IWANTYOUTOHAAAAAVETHIS!" He drops a box containing a plush Sukuna-Hikona in incredible detail holding hands with Take-Mikazuchi.
âO-oh!â Goodness, Naoto may never truly get used to the distinct... Aggression, sheâll say, that Kanji delivers his affection with. She has to take a moment to recover her breath, offering him a faint smile, then delicately lifts the lid off the box.
When she does, she cannot help but gasp, a bright pink flush descending on her cheeks. âK-Kanji-kun,â she breathes, delicately taking the plushes out of the box and setting the container down. âTheyâre beautiful!âÂ
She hardly knows how much time has passed before she is able to stop turning the gift around and around in her hands, but when she does, it is only to turn her wide-eyed stare to Kanji instead. âI--â
   How does she--
   How is she supposed to--
What did she ever do to deserve such a kind friend?
Naoto does the only thing she can think to do. She rushes forward, wraps her arms tight around Kanji, and presses her cheek tight against his chest.
   â...Thank you.â
Platonic love is not a runner up to romantic love. Platonic love isnât second place. Platonic love isnât less real, less valid or less powerful than romantic love. Donât let your platonic love take a back seat to romantic love.

Usually, a good nightâs rest would be enough for Naoto to feel, even if not-quite-rested, at least capable of tackling the coming dayâs tasks.Â
Somehow, after the chaos of last night, this seems so horribly, terribly untrue.
