"you just had to get misogynistic with it, didn't you? not asshole, not dick. you went straight for bitch." it was hard to not be anything but on edge. the carnival was too loud and bright. there was a dull ache building into a headache pounding between vanessa's temples. she'd had a transfusion that morning, but they were limiting supplies. it was better that it was her and not valentina in this situation. she could already imagine her sister's unbridled rage. even her retorts felt like too much. she could basically hear her father chastising her in her ear. they're santos', they don't stoop to other's petty levels. "we done calling names now? can we be civilized again?"
Derek pondered her words. He had not meant to be specifically misogynistic. It was a shame she took it that way. He had a great respect for strong women, having been raised by two. He only aimed to be callous. " I will remember your preferred choice of insults if there is a next time."
" You were the one snapping at me for simply existing." That had not been very civilised of her.
"what the actual fuck?" the words were muttered under violeta's breath as the phone was pulled from her hand and tossed to the ground. "thanks, man. what a super normal casual response to being asked to move. you always such a ray of fucking sunshine?"
" Go fetch." Was the only answer he had for Violeta. It would serve her right for speaking to him in such a manner. He would not stand for the blatant disrespect.
"Mountain ash?" Maeve pretended to think about it even as her shoulders tensed. There was, in fact, a stock of mountain ash in the back; there were very few reasons that someone unfamiliar with the supernatural should ask about it. Suddenly she wished that one of her sisters was with her. "Might have some. Don't see it stocked in a lot of places — where'd you hear about something like that?"
Derek would not repeat himself. Either she had it or not. He would know if the little girl lied. He could hear her heartbeat. It was accelerating and her pupils were slightly dilating. She was growing uneasy. Perhaps even a little tensed or scared. Good. That shop might not be a clown show like he had first assumed.
"It's none of your concern." He was not there to make small talk. " Do you have it or not ?" His first instinct was to come back later and break in. However if they had mountain ash and knew what it really was or how to use it, he might not be able to do so.
"i don't think that has got anything to do with waiting for someone." grace replies with a shrug of her shoulder. "i could ask you the same thing, y'know. you look broody and mean with a sugar coating of sheer frustration."
it probably wasn't the best idea to antagonize a complete stranger with all the recent happenings, but she was in a mood. "okay, then. now that that's settled, we can stand here and be creepy together."
" That is just my everday look. I curated it for years." He was glad people could get his whole vibe with a single glance. It saved him the trouble of necessary conversation. A powerful brooding stance had many perks.
He looked at her as she offered to stand together. Derek was a lone wolf. Now more than ever. And a busy one. He did not have time for that. Whatever scent had led him to the Ferris wheel could still be active somewhere else. It was frustrating to have lost it in the first place and he could not get distracted. " Tempting offer but I have things to do." As a rare act of kindness he did not add more interesting to his answer.
do you think you'd make a good alpha?
" Yes. It's in my blood. " However he could never be as good as his mother had been. Talia Hale had been a legend and memories of her were still vivid in the werewolf community. Derek had grown up watching her. Learning from her. Then he had learned from Laura who as a teenager had cared for him and protected them both. Keeping the Hales line alive and ready to take their revenge. It would be a privilege to continue the Hales women legacy. He knew he had the shoulders for it.
"Soon I'll kill whoever murdered my sister and take my rightful place as alpha." Then he would build a pack for himself.
has anyone told you that you come on a little strong?
" I am strong" And not just a little. His strength was considerable. No wonder it bled through all aspects of his being. " And I don't care about what people say or think." The wolf did not concern itself with the opinion of the sheep.
Wow. Rude. Maeve's eyebrows raised a fraction and her eyes tracked the man as he surveyed the shelves. It was clear that he was looking for something specific though she made no move to offer help again; her patience for customer service could only stretch so far. When he spoke she shrugged.
"We have some speciality items in the back." Things that required a more complicated preservation method than jars on shelves, or things that only a specific subset of people would ever need to use. A kernel of suspicion rolled in her mind. "If you give me a hint I can see if we have whatever you're looking for."
He acknowledged her answer with a nod, pondering whether or not he wanted to tell her what he was looking for. He could just break in later and check the back now that he knew there were stocks elsewhere. He was pretty confident in not getting caught.
However he decided to play nice. "Mountain ash."
people seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. kids running around with mouths full of cotton candy, lovers stealing kisses at the top of the ferris wheel, the glee that comes with excitement at a special event. mystic falls needed entertainment with everything that had been happening lately, but grace couldn't help but wonder if this was all just... too soon.
so here she was with arms folded across her chest, staring up at the ferris wheel as if it were about to bestow a momentous sign upon her. she turns at the voice, brows raising.
"why would i have to be waiting for someone? but no, i'm not." grace looks up at him, almost amused. "are you waiting for someone?"
" You're the one standing in front of the wheel with your arms crossed." It was not crazy to assume she was waiting for someone. "Or are you just being creepy watching people ?" Like him. But that was beside the point. He was the one asking the questions.
He was not waiting for someone. He was chasing them. There was a big difference. Predator. Prey. Derek was determined to be the apex one. "No."
like a fun new party trick, she knows there's something off in the room before they even reveal themselves. it's a tickle in her senses, a disembodied whisper in the back of her mind that she isn't truly alone. "—are you going to lurk all day, or do you want to talk?"
Derek was a master lurker. He was surprised she was able to sense him. More than surprising, it was suspicious. Perhaps ominous even. " I am perfectly content with lurking. I am not one for small talk." Even saying those two sentences felt unnecessary.
"yeah, it's a perfect shot. only way it could get any better would be if you could take a hint and stepped out of it." the bright lights of the carnival were giving just the right vibe but they seemed impossible to pin down.
Derek turned to look at the girl making that rude comment. As if he had any desire to be on her foolish picture. Could she just have not waited for him to pass ? It felt unnecessarily insulting to speak to him like that. He was debating crushing her phone but decided to just throw it a few meters away instead. That would surely get his point across and send her chasing.
grace wasn't quite sure what to make of the carnival. sure, it came to the town every year or so but this time things were different. animal attacks, strange people wandering around - there was always something new and creepy going on. she has her arms folded across her chest as she stares up at the ferris wheel in an almost grumpy manner.
Derek was following a scent through the crowd. He could almost swear he had smelled one of his kind. It had been so long. He was unsure. For years it had just been Laura and him. He knew her scent by heart but could he still recognised others. Thinking about his sister brought that familiar excruciating pain to the surface. His most cruel but loyal companion.
He bit his inner cheek until blood flooded his mouth and pushed his emotions deep down. He had a job to do. He tracked the scent to the Ferris wheel but there was nothing out of the ordinary. Children begging their parents for a ride. Lovers whispering in each others ears inside baskets. Friends making jokes while they queued.
He also noticed the beautiful woman standing alone. Looking almost as moody as him. "Waiting for someone ?"
Leigheas was at once a prison and a comfort. It was where Maeve spent most of her time growing up, under the watchful eye of her mother or, more commonly, an assortment of sisters. In the back room she had watched them brew potions a thousand times; had stood at the table and cut and ground and measured ingredients; there, in the corner she had tucked herself into a chair and leafed through the family grimoire in any spare moment that arose. Back then she had wanted to be anywhere but the shop, anywhere but underfoot. Now? Well… as long as she was left to her own devices, it could almost be heaven.
She'd taken the late shift for that brief respite from her family, and the time had slipped by without her even really noticing. The bell above the door rang and she looked up in surprise, eyes hitting the clock before the customer. "Oh— we close soon." Five minutes ago, really. "Can I help you find what you're looking for?"
Derek had not particularly planned on pushing Leigheas' door but had been intrigued by the shop's window. He wondered what kind of trinkets they sold. One look could not hurt. He entered with low expectations. It was probably full of useless crystals and other occult fanatics non sense.
He did not bother to reply to the girl. He did not plan on being long anyway. He was only surveying the place. Looking for the kind of herbs the shop sold and whether it could be a danger to him. Frauds could still have real wolfbane. So his eyes scanned the shelves, making a note of everything that was available for future use. One could never be too prepared. " Is that all you got ? " He eventually asked.
"—you don't need to breathe down my neck. you know that, right?" the carnival was crowded, but there was still a little thing called personal space that could be adhered to. being around this many people already felt like pushing it. it was the carnival or home, though, and the santos house was stifling. vanessa needed to breathe, and it was impossible with her father around.
Derek would have never been caught dead attending a stupid carnival but busy events were a prime hunting ground. Whoever was responsible for the chaos in Mystic Falls could lurk around, selecting its new victim. So there he was in the middle of the crowd. As he was making his round, an annoying brunette interrupted him, making him lose his focus.
He stared her down. Unimpressed. " And you don't need to be a bitch." Who did she think she was ?
