Emery was tired, so tired. He was barely keeping his eyes open, but the insomnia didn’t help. It had become a more common occurrence lately–sometimes it was stress, other times it came out of nowhere. The anxiety eating away at him for days or weeks at a time. He was in his office, not wanting to risk going home alone or bother his guardian. So he texted Azim to ask if he was still on the campus. The second that the other man came, Emery practically launched himself in his arms, hugging him tightly.
It was funny how they became best friends–they made out a couple times, but it never went anywhere. Instead, they just formed a tight bond. Emery used to joke that Azim was only friends with him so he could repair things that he used for bad luck conduits–but of course, Ems found it fun to do, so he never actually complained.
“I’m so tired,” he said quietly, finally pulling away from the much needed embrace, smiling softly up at his friend. “I figured you’d still be around.”

Years of being friends with Emery brought with it the familiarity of hugs that happened when Az least expected it. The first time Em launched himself at Az, back when they were students had caught him so off guard that he instinctively smacked Em in the nose a little too hard. It took like a month of apologies and burnt cookies. Now Az returned the hug with full force.
“No surprise there, Alice. Chasing a white rabbit, getting teleported to a whole new world, thank god you weren’t wearing a blue dress or the mouse would be kicking down your door.” He was hardly surprised by these turn of events. Most people were shocked that there was a whole other world, but come on with everything that exists Azim was sure this wouldn’t be the last new thing to come to the academy.
Azim opened his mouth to relay some of his concerns on the matter however a very hungry bird pecked at his ankles. The feel of heat against his skin a reminder and warning should he not feed them in time. “Yeah still kicking. Thanks to these little monsters,” Throwing his thumb over his shoulders to point at the two chickens behind him. “On a totally unrelated note can you repair things that are burned? One of them may have set fire to one or several of Desi’s old records and she’s starting to not buy my lies of why they’re missing.” Then again it was always hard for Azim to lie to Des even back when they were together. She seemed to see right through him. Thus he had to try extra hard to keep these two a secret from her.
