Three days after the attack on the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan, Pakistan, classical dancer Sheema Kermani participates in dhamal at the shrine. This is what defiance in the face of terror looks like.
Added context: On Thursday 16th February, 2017, the shrine of the great sufi Lal Shahbaz Qalandar was bombed in an attack claimed by ISIS in which over 85 people were killed. Sufi shrines and the culture that surrounds them in Pakistan are considered “un-Islamic” by the religious right-wing extremists, but for the majority of the country they are a place of love, devotion, and some of the last vestiges of hope in country wrecked by violence.
Dhamal is a form of worship at shrines that combines music, poetry, chants, and dance and is one of the reasons religious extremists consider shrines to be un-Islamic. This picture of dhamal being performed at the site of the attack, by a woman no less, has quickly become iconic; a small glimmer of painful hope in a week of only death and loss.

man whenever i have the sex trade debate, i bring up the whole “ok, so are sweatshops ok bc that overworked kid can at least earn enough to eat something?”
i forget that liberals actually do also think that sweatshops are ok. :/
I wasn’t prepared for this 😭
i’m the japanese prime minister post-handshake
This is so hard to watch. You can tell he’s trying to do that hand-pulling move he’s done in other handshakes but Abe is having none of it.
Plot twist: they are both nasty and it’s good they are suffering in one another’s presence.
^ yeah funny as this is, Abe will be plenty happy to have a US president that’s hostile to China. and nor is he any stranger to fascist closed border policies...

The music festival Coachella just announced its lineup for this year, and people are excited. Less exciting? The owner of Coachella, Phil Anschutz, has donated thousands of dollars to anti-LGBT organizations for years.
Through his organization, Anschutz Corporation, Phil has donated thousands to anti-LGBT groups such as the Family Research Council, the Alliance Defending Freedom and the National Christian Foundation. The Family Research Council, you will remember, is designated a hate group by the SPLC.
Reports of Anschutz’s allegeties to conservative groups is nothing new; the Freedom for All Americans infographic was produced in July 2016, and was re-printed by The Washington Post that same month. A 2009 Politico article pointed to Anschultz’s decision to purchase two conservative publications, the Weekly Standard and the Washington Examiner, in hopes of maintaining them as “a megaphone for his right-wing views.” In 2013, Greenpeace slammed Anschutz as a “financier of climate science denial groups,” highlighting his ties to Charles and David Koch, who have repeatedly backed efforts to block renewable energy standards. […]
The Anschultz Family Foundation released a statement to the Colorado Springs Independent’s Indy Blog in July 2016, saying the group “donates to hundreds of worthy organizations each year, and it does not attempt to dictate to those organizations how to spend their monies.”
That statement continued: “Those donations are made in accordance with our process and guidelines, and neither process or guidelines identify or reference in any way sexual orientation or gender issues… Mr. Anschutz, and the Anschutz companies, invest in many businesses employing tens of thousands of people. In all instances, personal lifestyles are neither a requirement or limitation to employment.”
Do you know someone spending a ton of money to go to Coachella? Make sure they know where their money is going first.
wow I didn't think I could hate edm any more than I already did but apparently I can.

Judge reaches decision with ‘real regret’ on basis her five children would be ostracised by their religious community
A transgender woman has been denied direct contact with her five children on the basis they would be shunned by their ultra-Orthodox Jewish community if she were allowed to meet them.
The woman will be allowed only to send letters to her children, after a judge concluded there was a real chance of “the children and their mother being marginalised or excluded by the ultra-Orthodox community” if face-to-face contact were permitted.
[...]
[The] birth mother insisted that allowing her former husband access to the children would lead to them being ostracised by their community, a view that was supported by submissions to the court by the children’s teachers.
Evidence provided by the mother suggested that the children would be barred from attending Orthodox Jewish schools if they had contact with their transgender parent.
[...]
The judge refused to accept the claim that “transgenderism is a sin”. “Sin is not valid legal currency,” he wrote.
So uh, one parent’s “right” to raise their children in a cult (not saying all religion is, but excommunication = cult) apparently trumps the right of the other parent to have contact with their children?
Like, ok, they wouldn’t be allowed into ultra conservative faith schools, but so fucking what? Does that have anything to do with their wellbeing? Is it the children who are ultra orthodox, or their mother? Christ alive.
@cool-daniela-fan sure, I can put in on here when I’m done. likely to just be a short piece tho, and i’m not sure i have anything that original to say on the matter.
