Can someone explain why so many people hate ajr so much? Like I understand not enjoying their music, but like there's people who seem like they'd go to war over it. I personally think they're solidly mid

It’s less about AJR and more about how the internet likes to have socially acceptable punching bags. One could blame their musical theater inspiration, the weirdness of their songs, or how millennial their lyrics feel, but those aren’t really why they get hate.

They make deeply personal and painfully earnest music about their own experiences and feelings (like Jack discussing his ocd), and they take pride in this. That combination sets off the worst type of person online. People who are afraid of being perceived as cringe, people who see authenticity that makes them uncomfortable as something to be attacked.

As kids the brothers were bullied at school for their music, and the way a lot of people speak about them online even nowadays is almost indistinguishable from a high school bully, so I think they’re used to it at this point.

I wish people could just say they don’t like the music and move on, but jumping on a hate train makes some people feel better about themselves.
