One major factor that makes the nature of psychiatric treatment intrinsically violent is the fact that the boundaries of the patient is considered an obstacle to treatment. The lack of consent of the patient is considered an obstacle to treatment. These obstacles are abhorred by psychiatry and considered things that much be broken down. If the patient has a disagreement with the treatment, or objects to it, this is considered a symptom and therefore is seen as something not to be validated or respected. Thoughts, behaviors, beliefs; these are all considered symptoms if they are in opposition to treatment and must be broken down. However, compliance with treatment is almost never seen as disordered or symptomatic, even if the patient is fawning or similarly complying to avoid more harm done to them. The fact that only extreme compliance is accepted by psychiatry is inherently violent and conditions people to accept abuse. Isolation and violence are not vectors of healing.
As someone who is receiving psychiatric care, this is so fucking stupid. I would be dead without mental health care, I've literally tried to kill myself multiple times before figuring this mental health shit out.
Therapist: Let's talk teach you some coping mechanisms.
Psychiatrists: What are your goals for your mental health?
Some asshole online here: ACAB includes mental health workers.
Before anyone says that's not the kind of psychiatric care OP is talking about, that is literally a statement in OP's bio. This person is entirely against mental healthcare, and mental healthcare is just healthcare.
Now, there is nuance to this situation. I'm not saying there's no room to critique mental health care or that all mental health workers are good. But there's no nuance in OP's views, this is ludicrous.
I'm so tired of this shit. I'm not really here to educate though, mostly I just wanted to say if anyone following me agrees with OP, please unfollow.
Anddddd that is no good. Did not realize OP was completely against mental health at all [this is what one gets for not checking OP blogs].
I too would not be where I am today without it and have been in manh rough places. I'll be unfollowing OP as there are many conversations to be held around mental health facilities, disregarding mental health workers entirely is. Certainly a choice.
Psychiatric care can come in all kinds, but it is insanely stupid and doesn't even make sense logically or scientifically. What. That's the same line of thinking that is against healthcare in general which is. Yeah.
As someone whose life has also been vastly improved by medical health workers. Deleting the plain version of my reblog and replacing it with this one with this knowledge.
"One major factor that makes the nature of psychiatric treatment intrinsically violent" and you didn't understand this was an antipsychiatry post? This is a post about psychiatric violence. This is a post about how the mental health system is abusive and violent. We cannot have conversations, let alone nuanced ones, about this if everyone's reaction to antipsych takes is to talk about how psychiatry helped them. That's great! Really. But a system that people rely on being abusive means people die. Please just listen to victims of psychiatric abuse.
ACAB includes mental health workers because they have people detained, they use the police to assist in psychiatric violence, exc. Psychiatry and the justice system often interact.
this is related to my will wood post from the other day where people will ignore someone blatantly criticizing psychiatry and then when they realize the person is antipsych they go "wait you don't actually like psychiatrists after you said you don't like psychiatrists what :("
