Of course his whole thing is hunting down an opponent strong enough to kill him and hes a warrior at heart but his whole reason for leaving his homeworld to seek an opponent was so he didnt destroy his world because of his rage curse 💔 and hes not a bad person at all morally, we know he was a hero for his world both told from his perspective and one of their people (assuming their king) When nolan and Allen are trying to recruit him. He and salaka become friends pretty damn fast for saying thokk was threatening to eat him and hes not cruel to strangers i.e thresha's people, wagulla (who was previously trying to cook him even) and others. He's in a roundabout way a liberator for a lot of people when he seeks out strong opponents and in no way did he have to win the new suit for salaka either. It's clear his curse does weigh on him heavily though with his outbursts about it, and he becomes VERY agitated when computer digs into him about him being unnecessarily snappy and how hes seemingly fallen from being a good person in that way. I do find it curious how spartan he is, in the way he allows himself literally no comforts and even decides to just lay down and sleep on the ships floor. It could be a culture thing, or maybe more of an "im not deserving" because of his curse. Maybe a bit of both. Hes pretty complex ! Hes also just hilarious.
Like seriously, what is the need to be so edgy whats with the aura farming im dead. Im a really big fan of the BB comics specifically because even 6 issues in they already have so many of these dumb moments with a focus on combat and i really love that kind of thing. I like salaka a lot too, I wonder if he was even conscious in the colossus' stomach. If so that makes it a whole lot worse that he was kind of just stuck in there thinking about how he really should have tried to do anything to help his people and he didn't for a couple thousand years, just chilling with dead ma and pa 👍 but hes a totally different person in the present. I dont even think he was morally bad before his whole tragic backstory event either, he doesnt seem unkind or even very stuck up, privileged and he knows it yes but he seems to rely on that out of comfort. he just seems like he had a total wake up call ego death which i appreciate. Theres probably a lot of guilt on his end. Oh god the hair had to go im so happy he went bald the blonde lick just wasn't it. Computer im undecided on. Obviously computer is tolerating or even fond of salaka, but absolutely despises battle beast through and through because it even doubts salaka's friendship with thokk, but that may just come from mistrust and hatred from bb murdering its whole crew. Not that i dislike computer! im kind of in a middle ground with it im waiting to see how it progresses further through the issues first. I do find it funny how it just calls bb out on his bullshit though, and the several attempts at betrayal are pretty amusing
I do find it interesting how the curse passed onto his daughter though ! Wonder why that is. Very grateful for these comics because hopefully the opportunity to give our lesser touched on characters that are still important to the plot some focus, like the viltrumites coming in 👀 I dont know if the plot will end where his imprisonment is or if it will jump around the main timeline but if theres some run in with others like space racer that would be cool. I also really appreciate the art in these comics because ottley should hopefully have the time to properly execute what he wants and the colouring is done by annalisa leoni who does some great work, especially if you can pick up the physical issues it just looks so good! The fact that so many artists have made covers for the issues is great too its insane how many variants there are.
Issue 7! I liked how the issue in its entirety showed what everyone relevant was up to, it was a nice refresher ! I really thought we'd see conquest this issue, but hes a no show. Theres no wonder kregg was reluctant about thragg choosing him for the mission if hes having to do this search for him haha.
Its good to see Salaka fully restored! Id honestly expected the spell to have healed him from being squished but only just about that so he survives. not for his whole body to regrow, nice! Hes honestly pretty built besides his lower half, I wonder if that was from Wagulla helping out too. Computer getting more of an identity was also interesting, but now it feels strange to say Zoolah instead of Computer. Bet you 10 he named her after one of his girlfriends from his fuckboy era.
Its fun to see ottley clearly having a lot of fun with these characters and probably more time to delve into side characters like the other fantanians on planet, such as that funny old wizard guy, bless him. Im also a big fan of the juggernaut's design.
I like this! I think the lipstick is funny in that stereotypical "this character is female" sense, but I also think it suits her. Shes a diva and knows what she wants, and what she is. The 4 eyes are also quite cool, and so is that pharaoh style 'beard'. It really shows you shes on top. Oh, and dont forget about the teeth. Big fan of those they look awesome. I also appreciate her alliance with the colossus at the end of the issue, they really are willing to put apart sibling rivalry for this so good luck to battle beast. Maybe thats where Conquest will clutch up!
Im a big fan of how comfortable Salaka has become with Thokk, and similarly with anyone he has an actual conversation with such as Wagulla. Im enjoying their development as friends. (Confirmed by both of them 😌)
Its fun to see how much concern Salaka has for him, and how everyone is moving around thokk like hes just some furniture. I bet he requested the forever blade was placed next to him too. Battle beasts' silence really isnt uncommon from him but its also fun to think about how hes probably silently seething. For sure he hates being in a compromising position like this, we know he has a lot of pride and arrogance.
Some appreciation for Wagulla and Salakas designs! Its nice to see a fully formed salaka with finally something to support that thick neck and Wagulla has such a contrasting design that really comes together from Ottley's individual style. Im fond of the fact shes the typical witch of the woods style with more "ugly" features, pots and pans everywhere and lives deep in the wilds on her own. Shes a very charming character all in all and its refreshing to see a series where not everyone is waiting to be evil or carries some grudge or something like that. I already feel a lot more attached to these somewhat side characters than any in the main invincible universe, probably just due to how they get a spotlight on their characters and how they tie into the main's stories in more than just a plot advancement way, or completely separate side tangents (cough, rudy and amanda, bulletproof) Being intertwined helps ! Thinking of salakas history with Wagulla and their obvious friendship, and battle beasts newfound friendship in her. (Yes its a friendship!!!! I say so) When battle beast told her how the meat tasted after their initial hostile confrontation....<3 hes really a big softie even if he has that hard, indifferent exterior that can sometimes tip into rudeness with his dismissal of anything mattering to him.
He is trying so, so hard to not care. But we know hes a liberator type from his invincible universe lore <3. Salaka reminds me of a mother here scolding him, haha. "Well thats horrible!" Are you going to make him apologise next? 😭
Notice how Thokk's self questioning is immediately reconsidered after Salaka scolds him. See, he does care. And "alone". Yes, about that.
Again, it shows how much trust Salaka has in battle beast's character to be up in his face like this assuming he will fight for him. Maybe a little naive, probably coming from how he obviously didnt have much experience in hardship before the emsiu twins invaded, but it shows trust and confidence in him, its nice. Its fun to see a return of that initial explanation salaka had in that he had to free his people and avenge his parents that way, it shows his character also, and is a good reminder of why they're fighting this fight (wow, is this good writing, kirkman?!)
Also Thokk....."this juggernaut offers me no challenge" what about the floor time you just spent healing from your intestines hanging out?
Looking forward to next issue! When I went into reading the battle beast series when it was at 3 issues i really didnt think id care for it at all and that it would just be a cool side addition to Invincible but I've actually become super taken with it, obviously. Its a fun story with some compelling characters! Im glad to have it back. And having ones the fans are already largely familiar with coming in such as the viltrumites is fun too, because you know youre going to see some awesome fight scenes which ottley is the master at, so its good to see hes obviously having fun with it. If you made it this far, thanks, and I'll hopefully see you next issue when I decide i want to get all my thoughts out.
IM BAAAAAACK. I was waiting for issue 9 to release which is super late online, for some reason? Im lucky to have gotten the actual physical comic on the day or I would've gone insane. Anyway, issue 8!
We finally get to see Conquest in the flesh which is great. And we learn that hes just a total menace anyway and was definitely not making empty threats at Mark and Oliver, nice. I guess there's a few reasons as to why the Viltrumites are offput by Conquest and its not just because he lives in a cube by choice. We don't exactly see the other characters eating people by choice, except a certain battle beast. More on that in issue 9

Now this issue we finally got that long awaited battle between the juggernaut and battle beast but now with a bonus colossus! I honestly thought these two would put up more of a fight or maybe even that he'd struggle against the two of them considering his previous encounter with the juggernaut but wow did Thokk really come through. He wasn't playing! I guess his floor time in Wagulla's place did him some good in thinking about how he'd improve lol.
The fight was good in all the ways an ottley fight should be which I loved to see. I thought salaka's cameo was hilarious because seriously, who do you think you are. That dialogue was so goofy and everyone knew it
"Hmm" yeah. Me too.
Oh, and Thokk literally eating the colossus' brains was crazy but also awesome to see. I really like that panel with the cool perspective. What really stood out to me in this fight was the usage of Draskula / the forever blade, I was a really big fan of how the blades regenerative ability is actually used, and done smartly too. Digging it in and then snapping it and repeating? Awesome. I was also a big fan of the line parallels between the two, it was a really nice detail.
We start off in issue 9 to the Juggernaut infact, not fighting and just collapsing dead. Which was kind of surprising honestly because she was talking big. I just didnt expect it. Notice how he immediately gets to cutting that piece for Wagulla without her even being there. Hes such a sweetheart. Im also really surprised that they were going to help! Or 'help' because what is Salaka going to do exactly, maybe get eaten?
This line from Zoolah stuck out to me honestly because shes right. We see again at the end of the issue that shes more aware of his nature while Salaka almost wants to brush over it and hope he can change. Its good, I love the interactions between these characters as I think they're really solid in their separate identities and its something thats sort of lacking in the main invincible universe. You dont really have characters knowing other characters, if they dont understand the other person they just conflict while I think here in BattleBeast its more relatable in a sense that the characters actually try to understand eachother but dont fault eachother for their nature. Its seen again later in this issue where Salaka apologises that he's just never going to get used to Battle Beast seeking death. Theres no real anger or trying to change him its just acceptance and its nice. It really helps in making these characters so likeable. And speaking of likeable, im kind of sad to see the emsiu twins go because they had really grown on me especially with their bickering, yeah. Those are siblings.
Im curious about the timeline on fantania being rebuilt because how long exactly has Thokk been stuck here? We're also introduced to Povina this issue, which im not really too sure about at the minute so I'm going to wait. For now, im totally with Salaka on that he really needs to keep an eye on her! Hes still got his good manners even despite that, I really love Sally. Hes actually fitting into this king role well, which isnt too surprising since he was the prince but its good to see.
Dont get me started on this. Its too cute. When Salaka later on calls Thokk hard to find it has me wondering because right here hes literally sat at your dining table, with a whole bib on, and he probably poured that glass himself too lol. Hes practically living at your place. Also, after staring at this panel for way too long look at that photo in the back by salaka and look at their asses DUDE. They are for sure related. Look at that. Anyway, if its not clear im really such a big fan of Thokk and Salaka's friendship and they're a super endearing duo because of their duality in character, yet they get on so well its hard not to love them. Thokk says himself within a month that "Too long I have gone without a battle, a tempest of fury builds within me. Every ounce of my willpower holds it at bay" which has me a little curious because im going to assume thats why he was hard to find. He was hiding out so he wouldnt hurt anyone bless his cursed heart. Even when he threatens Salaka he doesnt take it seriously at all which is great to see. Me and my friend intergalactic space warrior
What an end to the issue, too! Conquest! Conquest is being surprisingly amicable in that he is just trying to find out where the juggernaut and colossus are, and im very excited for next issue. Its good to see Salaka standing his ground but I wonder if he'd do so without Thokk there haha. And BB noticed when Salaka was acting unusual. Just take my heart and smash it will you. I imagine Thragg was more or less like a long-term project.
If I was to picture his background, his lineage could’ve been planned out in generations (the strongest most women and men etc) and each offspring would gradually eclipse the other, until Thragg was born, then presumably his already established genetics would’ve been pushed to their absolute limits… what would’ve passed for exceptional for the average Viltrumite was probably considered minimum for Thragg.
Argyll and the council probably bred such a being because the idea would’ve probably been, if Argyll died or the whole royal bloodline died out, the only logical thing to keep the empire united was force.
I largely agree! I assume he was selectively bred, im not sure about the lab baby theories that go around I think it was more of just selectively breeding those strong genes, it seems a lot more Viltrum to do it that way. The parents prove themselves and the child does too, and the cycle repeats.
I really like the idea of Thragg being bred as a guard dog and precaution because the idea is just really funny to me. Like damn it, squire fetch my cape. I also agree on the keeping the empire united by force using thragg because the empire really does rely on leadership. And making sure your precaution will never break free of that absolutist mindset helps, so I imagine the training started really young. They were probably playing Argalls speeches to Thragg while still in the womb LOL
A bonus note, im really taken with the Viltrumite stuff in episode 7. And I really like Argall's voice actor, its super entertaining to hear megatron like yeah, this guys evil if you couldnt tell.
Thragg refers to the bodies outside of viltrum being a reminder of what theyre fighting for but I thought they threw them out there because there were too many to bury before theyd start to rot. You cant build a mass grave to hold a few billion
Would beg for just even a smidge more Viltrum lore to latch onto. What is the societal hierarchy like? More on the council? How do things proceed outside of the council? Those kids were just told to find shelter and food on their own but theyre clearly provided uniforms and hygiene. Are they going under a short trial to prove they can survive on their own or is this for every child? Are there barracks like an agoge? Which I think seems most likely. Agoges reflect many of Viltrum's values in proving you can survive and loyalty to the state above connections. How young does a parent leave their child? Do they even have that much influence on their child? How did Thraggs upbringing differ from everyone else, assuming it did from his 'born and bred to lead' speech. Did he inherit the title of regent from his father? Was Argall also the last emperors son? Blood seems to play a big part. Many such questions that won't be answered 🙂↔️
