I think it’s fine. Everyone wants to be the parent they wished they’d had. No plannin’ the kids life, being trustworthy and all. But when you become a parent you figure out that you do worry about your kid. And your parents most likely did what they did because they cared for you. It’s only natural to want to protect your son. Especially since he’s so adorable and all. I can’t promise he won’t love space, but if you let him know you’re worried about him I’m sure he’ll understand.

[Tonia smiled. She liked how open he was being with her. It made her comfortable. Besides talking about problems helps and they were both up at this hour. Why not? Misery loves company and all. ]

Don’t worry about it. I don’t mind at all.

Yeah it’s really nice here… It’s my first time, but I’m sure I’ll come across it again. I love to wander about this ship. So much to see.

[When he brought up her job her smile faded a bit. Not that she didn’t like her job. Just she wasn’t so sure about what it was she was doing. She liked to say she was helping out. But sometimes it felt like people didn’t take her seriously. Even less because she wasn’t assigned to anyone. She wanted to make a difference. It wasn’t going as planned though.]

It’s different from what I expected. Maybe because I’m only in my first month here. I haven’t even been assigned to anyone yet. I want to help out even more and make a difference. Everyone works so hard on this ship. I can’t help thinking I could be doing more. Right now I do general stuff. Most of them being for the Captain. He’s been dealing with a lot lately and not that I don’t like helping him out, but being assigned to someone and being taken seriously… well I hope that starts soon. Overall, I’m just glad to be aboard. Back on Earth you hear the best stories about the U.S.S. Enterprise. I’m just lucky to be here with all the amazing people y’know?

He looked away for a moment, blinking and trying to shake everything away. Away, because he was not letting this girl see him like this.] Yeah, cool, huh.

You haven't been assigned a month in? That's weird. But, ah, I hope you get assigned soon, to someone else rather than Jimmy; it's okay you know, you can complain freely about him, [he laughed, albeit still a bit shaken up.] Yeah, I know. You're gonna be good, Tonia, I promise you that. As you just said, this is the Enterprise.

[She gave him a small smile. He looked at peace, his sleepy eyes gazing at her. Babies usually liked her and her red hair. It always caught their eyes.]

I’m sure it wouldn’t be so bad. He’d definitely learn from some of the best. With strong gentleman like you and the Captain in his family.

[Then looking back at Sam, Tonia shook her head. ]

I’m fine. Thanks for asking though, must’ve gotten lost in thought and ended up around here.

Still though. I'd like him to lead a safe life, and you and I know that while this may be shits and giggles it isn't safe, at all. [He sighed. Then, after a pause, he shook his head, and laughed.] Sorry. I promised I wouldn't be like one of those dads that start planning out ther kids' lives the moment they pop into the world, and here I am, also overwhelming ya with all my shit.

Glad you're fine, Tonia. Great place to get lost by the way. This, or the mess hall and only because there's food in there. [He looked out of the window, finally moving from his spot again, and going to sit on a nearby bench.]

So a yeoman? How does that work out for ya, going good? Who do you work with? Is it cool?

[Oh gosh there’s another one. The thought embarrassed her as soon as it came out. Lately she and the Captain had been on …. better terms. But he was still a big ball of trouble…. not that she wasn’t. What exactly had the problem been between them? It was hard to tell sometimes. Anyway she shouldn’t judge just because they were related. He did look like him in some ways though. Still very handsome and those blue eyes that pierced through the night. He seemed polite enough and a dad. She had soft spots for dads. Probably ‘cuz of Leonard. That guy…. She let a small smile cross her lips, hoping she looked more awake.]

Yeoman Barrows at your service, sir. But you can just call me Tonia.

[She said it like a label, just like he had said his. He was proud though… she wasn’t quite sure. It was a bit of a game to her. Being a yeoman she helped out wherever she could and it identified her as being someone people could go to for help and such. ]

So Sam Kirk the Captain’s brother. What’re you doing up so late? Taking care of the little one?

A'right, Tonia, then you can just call me Sam, please, [he returned the smile with one of his own, soft and genuine but tired nevertheless.]

Indeed, takin' care of the badass troublemaker right here, [he motioned at the bundle in his arms,] Peter, Tonia, Tonia, Peter.

He can't sleep sometimes, so I bring 'im here and he likes watching around. Kinda worries me that he'll start taking a liking for space and he'll end up wanting to spend his life on a spaceship, [he laughed, teasing tone, smirk in place, playful glint to his eyes.

Inside, he truly worried.]

How about ya, I was worried you were lost or sleepwalking; you're okay, yeah?

[Tonia blinked a couple of times. She must’ve still been dreaming. It looked like the Captain was holding a baby in front of her. As he neared her she realized he wasn’t the Captain. Only someone that looked a bit like him. But he was holding a baby. ]

Me? Yes, I’m fine. Just couldn’t sleep, one of those nights. I’m sorry … You look like someone I know. Have we met or do you get that a lot?

[Her eyes wandered from his face to the baby. Baby. So cute. So innocent. He was probably being a responsible parent and attending to the baby’s abnormal sleep patterns. How nice. This was the first baby she’d seen since Joanna, and even then it hadn’t been much in person. They always managed to be adorable. ]

Blue eyes flickered down as well. Peter slept peacefully, his little hands curled around his sweater, one Aurelan had gotten him because 'it makes you look older and that's kind of hot'. He smiled, not realizing he was until he looked up at the drowsy girl again.

Better to say it now.] Sam Kirk, miss. The Captain's brother, [funny how that was his tag from now on, his full name: Sam the Captain's brother, but he didn't mind. He was proud of that, so he said it with pride.] You?

[Tonia quietly walked out of her room, hoping no one would notice her out and about at this hour of night. She literally held her breath as she walked past the hallway of other rooms. As the distance grew between her and the other members of the crew, or at least where she thought most would be, she relaxed a bit more. That nightmare had really rattled her. She could barely remember what it was now…. it had faded quickly like the steam of hot breath in cold air. Her heart still beat fast and she knew that her breathing was much too loud. Night terrors. What was she six? She hadn’t had nightmares this bad since childhood. Yearning for someone to hold her… to save her… it all came back. As a child she had quickly learned she would have to take care of herself. No one to calm the storms of the night that raged in her mind. Tonight was no different. She would walk aimlessly until the calm came… then the sleepiness would return. Hopefully. She was so dazed she barely noticed where she ended up.]

[Sam had slowly learned to love that little place everyone called observation deck, but that he had baptized as 'The Baby Crib'. With capitals just so it gave off a more official air.

At late hours of the night, or day, or whatever the hell it was, when there were not many people around and Peter couldn't sleep, he'd sneak away from his and Aurelan's room --although he was pretty sure the woman had already found out, but hadn't said anything yet-- with the infant in his arms. And they went over there, just to watch stuff happen.

It eased the little dude, and it calmed him as well, so it was a win-win situation except that Sam, being the bigger of them both, was the one who had to carry him around and pace and pace so Peter wouldn't start crying.

Eventually, he got tired. This was one of those nights where he chose to leave as soon as Peter's eyelids closed, but-- the girl approaching looked kinda dazed. Sleepwalking, maybe? He didn't know. As much as he would have liked to bail well.

He was a Kirk, and Kirks helped. Child in his arms, he stepped closer to her, and tipped his head to a side, curiously observing.] Heya, miss? You okay there?

Do you wear pyjamas and a cape and paint yourself blue at night

As a matter of fact I do. Well --I mean, painting myself blue would be offensive to the crew that is, indeed, blue inmyopinionokay...but my cape, no one can take it away.

Besides, Peter likes it.

And then I run around the hallways. Actually you know what, I'd love to only wear the cape, if you know what I mean. But I guess I'd get into trouble for doing that.

Vera looked up, closing the game nearly instantly. A smile spread slowly across her face, but widely. “Oh, darling dear,” She cooed, folding the game behind her. “How convenient, for a friend, such as myself, to receive your package. This game is so fun to unwind with, really, a perfect choice on your part.” She turned towards him, putting her elbow on the back of the couch. Their position was close, too intimate for her to resist glancing down at his sculpted chest.

"You know," Her eyes flicked back up to his face, as she tilted her head, and sighed, "My package got misplaced too. Can you believe how unreliable the post is? I really, really was looking forward to my duvet arriving timely. I mean, I’m sure you can relate,” She laughed.

"But," Another sigh, as her eyes looked to the ground in dismay, "I really don’t have the time, you know? To go through and ask around, I have so much studying to do." Although still looking to the ground, the corners of her lips twitched for a smirk. The officer’s kind nature was something she couldn’t resist digging her nails into. "You know, though," Her head and eyes angled back to him, "If you really want to prove that you’re more than just eye candy, you could help me look for it," She smiled kindly at him, optimistically.

"I might be more inclined to part with this handheld if I had my pillow and duvet to relax into."

Well he couldn't help being eyecandy, that was for sure. And he wouldn't fight that, hey, if she wanted to admire she very well could. As long as there was no touching, it was all cool (nevermind how Aurelan's voice echoed in the back of his mind, or Christine's.) Just because he could, he crossed his arms, grinning down at her.

Bastard had hidden his videogame. His videogame. He wanted it back. But no, that was too much to ask for, apparently.

"You're blackmailing me into finding your duvet," Sam finally said, raising his eyebrows because yes, he was impressed. "So much to study yet here you are Vera, chilling in the middle of a rec room." As much as he wanted to protest though, he recognized that glint in her eyes. And as much as he didn't want to admit his defeat, it was right there, in front of him. Goddammit.

He frowned, clicking his tongue. "There's just no other way you're gonna give it back, is there?"

It’ll take more than just a defensive statement for me to believe you, but I’m sure you’ll prove yourself eventually.

[Then his smile sort of falters, but he chuckles and looks down at himself.] It's okay. You can say it. Who do I vaguely remind you of?

Vera was slumped across a red couch in the rec room, playing a video game rather loudly. She shifted from her back onto her side, biting her lip as she feverishly mashed the touch buttons. This wasn’t exactly a duvet, but it wasn’t anything she disliked having. Sure, if the rightful owner approached her about it, the surgeon would be forced to give it up. But that didn’t mean she had to give it up so easily.

She swung her legs around the couch, sitting up and leaning in. The first boss battle in the entire game. She licked and then bit down on her lip as she attacked the bastard. God, why had she never invested in video games before? This was a perfect waste of time.

He'd noticed that announcement, the one saying things got mixed up. Surprisingly, what he had ended up with hadn't been awful or traumatizing, although it was...boring, to say the least. Who the fuck wanted orchid bulbs? Like, that shit could be easily obtained if you knew certain botanists and knew how to bribe them, for real.

Anyway, who was he kidding? His package was kinda lame too. But it was his videogame, and dammit he would find it because all work and no play (not involving a baby) was driving Sam completely and utterly mad.

Coincidentally, one of the first places he considered looking for, aside from the lab, had been the rec room with the nice little seats and chairs and whatnot. Which had been a good move from his part, because there it was, in her evil grasp.

"Ahem," Sam skipped over to Vera, and sat next to her, fitting in as best as he could. "I believe that thing's mine, sweetheart."

I am not sure I should, that spot seems to render its occupants… useless. /She smiles and winks/ And it’s not about what he has done to me, it’s more about what he hasn’t yet.

Well, I admit you got me good, [Sam laughed, shaking his head.] I'm not useless though. [Surprisingly so, he thought with a hint of bitterness and a slightly bigger amount of self-loathing. Whatever.]
