Based on #5 from here
*whispers* could you please tell me why we think that he is using eyeliner?Ā
(I always assumed it is a sign of his slowly dying body o////o)
I think it might be something Rae Geiger or another crew member once said, possibly in jest, but a great part of the fandom latched on to the idea and honestly, I personally have a lot of fun picturing Hordak putting on or cleaning off the makeup, just being very meticulous about it (in fact, itās imagery that I used at the beginning of the Sound of Silence animatic, minus the meticulous part. That was just Hordak being exhausted, cleaning off that blasted eyeliner and just⦠not having a good time. Also in the reconditioning pool it got runny. I loved drawing those things, angsty as they may have been.)
Also, just⦠Entrapta being in the Sanctum before Hordak sometimes. And the first time this happens, Hordak gets immediately defensive of His Territory and goes out of his private quarter into the Sanctum proper, not quite ready for the day yet, to see who would dare intrude-!
And thatās when Entrapta learns he wears makeup. Says nothing, just makes a mental note and adds it to her mental Hordak Folder (and perhaps also the digital one, I mean we all know she keeps one, right? She⦠she just would.)
This got away from me real quick and I canāt even source the first bit but Hordakās eyeliner is just one of those things that is far too precious to me.
Also of note: When Horde Prime resets Hordak to factory-stupid conditions (āI am Bender, please insert girder!ā) he looks like every other clone: No black. They all have light gray around their eyes (which I assume is just meant to represent brows, the sink-in around the eye, but it might be coloration), but the black is gone, which makes me think itās makeup. If it were physical decay, Iād expect it to be like the rest of it is on his body - all scraggly and veiny, more erratic.
Iāve written as it both makeup and defect-related. While Rae says one thing, I donāt take it as canon.
To me it could possibly be a part of his defect because we know his body has skin patterns which are symmetrical as well. And just because itās gone when heās reset to factory settings, it doesnāt mean anything more than Prime has made him look like everyone else, including changing his hair color and mouth color (like his eyes as we see when heās reset). He would likely ādecayā again if heās still in his defect body. This also explains why heās less black around the eyes in the baby Adora flashback.
I think it was @soranis-sunshadow who had a great explanation for it.
Iāve also written him as using makeup to make himself look more intimidating. There are many creatures on Etheria and I doubt that he would look quite as frightening with white face and red white in a Horde outfit. So, black eyeliner and a dark armor (that also supports his frail body) to look more intimidating. I headcanon that Scorpiaās grandfather gave him the idea.
I always headcanon that his blue hair is part of his defect (in spite of Raeās words) along with the red eyes and mouth.
Iām going to add here - Iām not sure who said it in the thread but I remember someone mentioned Hordak using makeup as an intimation tactic and it made me think of this - Warpaint is a legitimate brand of make up aimed at men
ieI did have a theory about the spacebatās periorbital coloration. It was the one about the Horde Clone maturation process.
I didnāt address hordakās eye coloration in that. I donāt think I ever mentioned my HC for his choice in facepaint.
The way I see it, Hordak has borrowed, without meaning to - certain aspects of Scorpion culture. The Fright Zone and Horror Hall were named so even before he took control of them
The scorpioni seemed to have a darker aesthetic. Their choice of ātraditional villain colorsā is visible in the frescoes, (lovely sith lord style)
the picture of Scorpiaās moms
(Which coincidentally seems to be a mixture between Horde Primeās aesthetic and that of the scorpioni) He is fond of the same shade of red that big mom has in the picture.
ā¦and Scorpia herself - who rocks a black lipstick on one lip.
Hordak too seemed to have borrowed that look for whatever reason.
The eye makeup is a mixture of adopting the goth aesthetic of the host kingdom and him trying to hide his perceived weakness behind 'warpaintā.
As I pointed out in my last essay, the anorexia one, his facies is sunken and sickly (in comparison to that of his brothers). It might not be a obvious to Etherians since they canāt really compare Hordak to a healthy member of his species (no one had ever seen one before) but Hordak himself can and as such, he tries his best to hide the sickly parts of himself (and show off the healthy ones).
Thin sickly arms -> Bam! Bulky armor that buffs him up!
Visible neck port that someone might stick their fingers into -> the ridiculous collar his first armor comes with.
Discolored neck -> Turtleneck robe (the turtleneck disappears in s4 when his condition improved because of Entraptaās care and armor)
Drawn, gaunt face with sunken eye sockets -> Black makeup to hide how sunken his eyes really are and make him look more imposing.
His legs are the healthiest part of him and will you look at that! He displays them for all to see!
As far as the blue hair is concerned⦠I for one headcanon it as being part of his condition. Prime had him bleached to make him fit in. (for as long as Prime needed access to his memories and data on Etheria, after that, itās probably death on the frontlines again for the sickly clone). This is merely my headcanon, I chose it because Hordak strikes me as a very utilitarian pragmatist. Warpaint is utilitarian, hair dye is⦠not.
Everyone is free to imagine it as they please. Thatās the beauty of fandom.

What she did to Hordak
Makes you wonder who did it in the fright zone..
Can I imagine hordak is that allowed
If hordak had seen Entrapta in space he would have died. The boob window and her welding mask off (so scandalous!)
Battle figurines
Do you think she isnāt using her hair because it hurts from prime grabbing it? :(
āI saw one in Hordakās lab!ā
