Regarding Envy’s behaviour — if we write then please read this!
disclaimer: before reading this, know that in no way I agree with Envy and I also don’t think he’s innocent. At all. His actions can in no way be excused and I don’t mean to say that they should be. Keep that in mind.
I personally don’t believe that Envy WANTS to be evil. I know that probably sounds weird, but that’s exactly why I will elaborate.
Father once mentioned that he knew Greed would show up because he knows what they think. Hohenheim once mentioned that Father designed Pride in a certain way. And it’s also known that Father tried to create a portal of truth in Gluttony but failed. From this we can conclude that Father designs them while creating them AND that he knows their thoughts.
Envy is jealous of humans. Father knew that and purposely made his true form look like a monster. Not just that, the fact that he’s a shapeshifter is even worse. He can look like any human, but he can never BE one.
So instead he tries his hardest to prove to himself and others that he, a homunculus, is way better than those stupid humans. How does he do that?
By killing people. He kills them > he wins > he’s better than them. But at the same time killing people makes him even more of a monster. I like to compare it to eating a chocolate cake on a diet. Feels good at the time, but you regret it after.
Besides that, Envy doesn’t even really enjoy fighting. In fact he’s avoided it several times in both manga and anime. He only does what he’s ordered to do or what’s necessary to do.
Does he boast about it? Yes. Obviously he needs to show off how much BETTER it is to be a homunculus and how STUPID humans are. It kind of reminds me of what little kids do. Their friend gets a new toy and then they grab their old toy and pretend it’s a lot more fun because they’re jealous.
And guess what? He’s Envy. Obviously he’s jealous.
Envy actually wants people who care about him. He wants friends. He wants to be human. Yet he can never BE human so why try, right? Better spend his life being ‘happy’ hiding behind his ‘’homunculi are amazing and humans suck’’ mask ‘cause thats where he feels safest.
Honestly I think he’s been wearing that mask for so long he barely even realised it was there himself.
On top of that, he has an inferiority complex, but acts like he has a superiority complex because that’s the way he’s learned to speak from his family. It makes him feel safe.
