The versatile tiny spoon that serves one or a crowd
Yellowjackets are so funny, they remind me of my cats. Was sitting outside eating some BBQ and some yellowjackets were interested. Tore off a chunk of pork and put it to the side so they could pick at it instead of getting in the way of my hands and utensils, and much like my cats, they said "noooooo I want the one you're eating off of"
Love watching them saw off chunks with their mandibles then waddle through the air hefting meat they can barely carry, very cute
Boiling a lot of gameplay effort down to a single d20 roll with a simple pass/fail resolution kind of sucks because while it's iconic and there's a kinesthetic joy to rolling a d20 and it can make for some nice drama, the actual result can often end up sucking up a lot of momentum out of a game, but the problem isn't exactly to do with the d20 exactly (even though, admittedly, systems that use something like a normal distribution are less likely to produce such swingy outcomes) but more to do with the fact that despite more than twenty years of progress the people behind D&D still haven't figured out more than a bare mechanical skeleton of d20-based noncombat mechanics.
d20s are okay for combat because while missing on an attack does suck the way D&D combat works it's not like a single missed attack immediately erases all of your character's contributions towards a goal. There are so many rolls being made and the numbers have already been nudged, on an enemy and character design front, ever so slightly in favor of the players that barring absolutely phenomenally bad dice rolls (which players have some agency in mitigating) most encounters will end in favor of player characters and those really long unlucky streaks are unlikely. But more importantly: a single missed attack in a combat scenario doesn't immediately erase all progress.
D&D doesn't really have a model for noncombat resolution where you can whittle down at a situation until you succeed. The d20 being really swingy makes this problem more pronounced in non-combat situations because in those situations what you're actually looking at is multiple individual failure points. This is in part not just a game design issue but also an adventure design issue, which is why a lot of adventures that rely on characters completing a certain linear set of actions actually kind of fail in systems which only have binary pass/fail resolution for noncombat situations.
Incidentally, the type of environment the game was meant for, the dungeon crawl, is actually perfect for having lots of discrete noncombat challenges in it, some of which can be deadly if approached carelessly, but most of which if failed simply force the characters down different paths. If the model you built your adventure around was "the player characters MUST pick all these locks or otherwise they won't progress" then, well, there's a clear failure point. In a dungeon crawl characters can usually look for a different way around the lock.
It's even better if you accept "the characters can fail so that some parts of the dungeon are now barred from them" as a potential outcome, because it makes both failure and success meaningful. Then the game must simply roll ahead from the characters' failures.
I've seen several systems where a roll (d20 or otherwise) isn't a simple pass/fail but has degrees of success, like "you didn't do what you wanted but something else beneficial happened" or "you got what you wanted but there was also a downside" or even "you got what you wanted and also something else good happened!"
And in theory I like that but all the times I've seen that system it's always laid on the GM to come up with what those good or bad effects are. And in my experience sometimes it's easy to come up with something based on the action attempted, but sometimes it just stops me dead. It's the ebbs and flows of any system, I suppose

"Can mathematicians visualize four-dimensional objects?" Look if we're being strict about what "visualize" means, I don't really think people can visualize more than two dimensions.
Your visual field is essentially two-dimensional; yes, you have depth perception from binocular vision, but this is just a little bit of extra data attached to images organized two-dimensionally. Depth-as-inferred-from-parallax isn't even that big a part of your visual experience, which you can observe by closing one eye and noticing that the world doesn't look very different. Your visual imagination is similar: You are imagining what things would look like, and what they would look like is an image and images are two-dimensional. To think about the three-dimensional structure of an object, you might think about what it would look like from multiple angles, or in cross-section, or if parts of it were partially or totally translucent. You have a lot of experience navigating a three-dimensional world but your visual memories and imagination are closer to being thumb-tack boards composed of two-dimensional images with annotations and connections than they are to being three-dimensional sculptures in your brain. If you had a 3D model in your head it would be trivial to perform tasks like "given a picture of an object, draw what it would look like rotated 10 degrees" but in fact this takes quite a bit of practice and skill.
Three-dimensional mathematical objects are usually conveyed through two-dimensional illustrations in textbooks and papers and on whiteboards, and this format is generally entirely adequate for them. It should be noted that in addition to the standard tools for representing three-dimensional objects two-dimensionally, mathematicians make use of a variety of mathematics-specific conventions for what an image means. If you had no familiarity with those conventions you would not recognize that these images respectively represent a sphere and three intersecting planes, for example.
Four-dimensional objects are much harder to represent and think about visually than three-dimensional ones, both because we have much less experience with them and because they are further away from the two-dimensional images that we have to work with. But it's certainly possible to do so, by way of cross-sections, projections, conventions and metaphors. The difference between this and how we understand three-dimensional objects is more a difference of degree than of kind.
can people imagine what it would be like to hold a three dimensional object in their hands, or literally hold an object, and thus perceive it in three dimensions that way?
If I took those three intersecting planes and labeled one axis time and put the sphere in it would that count as visualizing a 4th dimensional object? Would I need another plane? Even if it was correct, would it be visualizing it in my mind or just visualizing the model in my mind?

Top-shelf costume design and fight scene choreography are always a treat, but sometimes what you really need to see are a couple of frumpy middle-aged men in craft foam breastplates awkwardly missing each other on purpose with "alien weapons" that are clearly bargain-store curtain rods with some crap we found in the prop closet glued on.

I used to be able to, not too long ago, post inflammatory comments on YouTube about say, trump supporters who get arrested by ice and then regretting voting for trump not deserving sympathy because they still wanted such things to happen, just not to them, I'd get a little scolding message from youtube like "thats not how we eant our users to talk :(". And then id tell them to fuck off and sometimes it would post and spmetimes not.
HOWEVER nowadays if I post something like "fuck bitchie torres" it doesn't even give me a warning it just straight up does not post my comment, no warning or anything. Can we get a few more CEOs splattered please

Not to insert myself here but as someone who owns Ghost Rider 1 and 2 on DVD I do actually need everyone to watch it right now because in the second one a kid asks Nick Cage as Ghost Rider how he pees and Nick Cage says “it’s like a flamethrower” and then they hard cut to a CGI skeleton in full black moto leather pissing a jet of fire and then it does a shoulder check at the camera and nods like “hell yeah brother”

When I was in third grade my teacher asked me how many oceans there were, I looked at the map on the wall and 6 black blobs in the oceans that I knew were ocean names, so I said there were six. She corrected me, we went back and forth a couple times, so I finally got up to look at the map closely and there were indeed six labels- because they had split the pacific in half and labeled it on both sides of the map.
Didn't actually get glasses until a couple months later when I was in church and happened to be sitting next to one of my parents in the back of the room and asked what the chalkboard said because I couldn't see it and they freaked out.
