A comprehensive list of all Aziraphale's known books
So after I made the 3D model and floor plan of Aziraphale’s bookshop, I found myself wanting to take on another project. I guess I just really enjoy researching and compiling Good Omens minutiae. Anyway, here it is!
This is a spreadsheet that lists all of Aziraphale’s known books. They’re broken up into categories and sorted alphabetically by author last name. It includes each book’s title, author, publisher, year published, a brief description of the book (most of them straight from Wikipedia or Google Books), and an explanation for how we know Aziraphale has it. There’s also a column for links where applicable.
To view the full text in a cell, just click on it. Its contents will appear at the top of the spreadsheet, and you can click and drag the bottom of that box to make it bigger and easier to read. The sheet is also searchable like any webpage (Command+f for Mac and Ctrl+f for PC).
I’ve been as exhaustive as possible compiling this, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect! If you notice and error or find something new that should be included, please leave it in a comment on the sheet or message me here directly so I can update it. (Make sure include where you got the information as well!)
INTERESTING DISCOVERY!
Aziraphale has one really weird, really out-of-place book in his collection: The Home Planet by Kevin Kelley.
It was published in 1988, which makes it much more modern than the others in his collection. The vast majority of his books were published before 1930 (key exceptions being his Terry Pratchett books, the Just William series Adam added, and his questionably existent Jeffrey Archer books).
It’s also a book of Earth and space photography. Aziraphale has several books of illustrations, but I’ve found zero others that contain photographs, so that doesn’t seem to be an area of interest for him. And it’s sitting next to the sofa among a bunch of encyclopedias. It’s distinctly not an encyclopedia.
So what is up with this book? And why is it there specifically? (Because it’s not a random mistake, this show is too good for that.)
Here’s my theory:
I don’t think it’s a coincidence AT all that this book is so similar to Crowley’s The Extremely Big Book of Astronomy. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s right next to the sofa Crowley sits on every time he’s there.
Either he got this book for Aziraphale because he knows Aziraphale loves books, or Aziraphale got it for him because he knows Crowley loves space. I’m leaning toward the first one, considering Crowley actively denies that he “does books” and I doubt Aziraphale even knows that he has any. If that’s the case, maybe Crowley was over one day and he just kinda… slipped it onto the shelf. Casually. No big deal. Just to say I’m here and I’m part of this too, and I thought this belonged in your collection. Or if it did go the other way, maybe Aziraphale thought Crowley doesn’t like reading so maybe he’ll enjoy a book that’s photographs. What would he like photos of? Maybe Earth. He loves Earth. And maybe space. He helped build that.
Either way it’s absolutely precious.
(Shout out to @fuckyeahgoodomens for being incredibly helpful and resourceful as always, bringing a BTS photo to my attention which was high enough quality that this book could be identified)
Ooh! 👀 Wahoo! Awesome job! :) ❤
… what if…
…what if they just do that… slip things to each other’s places…
Like…
it’s Aziraphale who leaves the eagle from the church in Crowley’s hallway, as a subtle way of saying thank you
it’s Crowley who leaves multiple angel wings mugs in Aziraphale’s bookshop because he found them cute and couldn’t bring himself to just gift them to the angel
Omg! I must find this book! This is sooooo perfect!
I lean towards Aziraphale buying it with Crowley in mind, but I really must find it and read it!
Sooo. @mochacoffee I bought this book. Open the package... Husband says: “we have that!” Um... I swear I looked!! I looked in Earth section of bookshelves but not in Space Photography section. Silly me.
So now I have a second copy. I feel like I should mail the one I got to another fan who would like it. Message me if you’d like it! (Edit: book has been claimed!)
