This is an interesting case. It’s modern day art, in a modern situation, but it’s drawn with an updated version of the traditional Korean artstyle.
Korean artstyle is quite distinctive. Every Asian artstyle has its own traits, and Korean is no different. Korean art tends to use minimal shadows, with the only ones really used are on the ground.
It’s quite interesting to see, mixing both modern and traditional into this piece.
This is traditional Korean calligraphy.
Korean calligraphy is done similar to many others. using gentle ink brush strokes to write sentences writing down and back. The red ink in the middle is used to represent how it is finished.
What makes this unique is that every single character can be differentiated. Perhaps this may be biased, but I find Korean calligraphy to be the most beautiful.
This graffiti art was done in tribute. The art is of YouTuber Desmond Amofah, who’s known as Etika online.
Desmond committed suicide several months ago, losing a battle against deteriorating mental health. His many fans have created a lot of art in tribute for him, but several artists went the next level and created a mural in his honor.
Not only is it a beautiful art piece, it truly shows how much the fans cared about it.

A wallpaper from a recent video game, Devil May Cry 5. Why is this one unique and influential? Well, not only does it mix 2D and 3D elements, it had been 11 years since the last installment of the series.
They pulled out all the stops for this video game, and it shows. Not only can you feel the effort, you can feel the love in it, how much the creators appreciate their fans. Was it worth the wait?
The reviews and fan reception just scream “hell yeah.” I always love how video games can bring people together.
And now, a manga shot from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Said manga series has been running for a very long time (in publication since 1987). What makes it so unique is that the art is fantastic, even though it’s from an older series.
This shot represents the sheer power and majesty that is Giorno Giovanna (the protagonist of the 5th part), who’s the most powerful character in the series. While it may symbolize a God, it’s one that is the furthest thing from malevolent.
The picture of a more obscure video game, Project X Zone. (Specifically, the sequel.)
Why this is unique is that it is a crossover. Crossover video games usually have a new art team to work on all the characters. However, for this game series, they actually bring back the artists from ALL of the video game franchises to work together. While some may think this would create a clash between the more ‘anime’ characters and the realistic ones, it surprisingly doesn’t, and it blends spectacularly well.
It goes to show, clashing artstyles can work really well.
An now for a more recent jump in animation, this is a scene from the hit anime series, Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer. This is a scene from episode 19, where both anime watchers, manga readers, and even those that are not a fan of the show found fantastic.
The animation, which was already beautiful, makes an astronomical jump this episode, making one of the greatest scenes in modern anime.
It really shows how far that Shonen anime has come.
This jumps from artwork to animation. This is a screenshot of a scene from Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. What makes this unique is that the artstyle is supposed to be a recreation of the older Batman films that starred Adam West and Burt Ward (who reprised their roles for this movie).
What makes this unique is that unlike previous animated DC films, this one went for an older cartoon-style, not just in art. They added old sound effects and dialogue that could be heard from several decades ago.
This is a wallpaper based on the hit manga and anime, Death Note. It features two of the main characters; Light Yagami and L.
Death Note is one of the older series in the manga and anime industry. What makes it so unique, however, was the fact that it was one of the first mangas to have a Villain Protagonist. Light (on the left) is the main protagonist, but he has evil intentions. L (on the right), is actually a detective that’s firmly on the side of good. The contrast is shown, the black on the left, the white on the right.
Death Note is still a very famous franchise today, and made a huge impact on the anime community. It shapes a lot of writers outside of manga as well.
This image is from the fighting game series Under Night In-Birth. I chose it due to my interest in the fighting game series.
What I really like about this is how they use colors. The two characters on the front have more vibrant colors, due to being the focus. The ones in the back have faded colors due to being less focused. The irony is, that the two characters in front are not the main characters. They’re just two new characters that were introduced to the series recently.
This artwork is from Dragalia Lost, a mobile game created by Cygames and Nintendo. I’m including this, as I’m very surprised at how detailed this piece of art is, considering the fact that it was made for a mere mobile game (Albeit a very successful mobile game). It shows that everyone puts detail into different things, no matter how big or how small.
Similar to the Inosuke one earlier, this is of a fictional character representing a type of riot. This time it’s of Mei, a character in the video game Overwatch. The main reason Mei became an icon is a case of irony. Blizzard, the company behind Overwatch, displayed their disapproval of the riots. So the rioters took their own character and made her the icon of the riots. Like Inosuke earlier, itès a case of using modern day media used in political and economical based events.
This one is an interesting choice. It actually fits into multiple categories.This goes into both protests and anime/manga. There are several riots and protests currently going on in Chile because of the oppressive government, and through some miracle, the icon of the riots is Inosuke Hashibira from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. I don’t know how exactly it happened, but it did. Several artists now draw him as the representative, and he’s even spray painted all over Chile as part of the protest.

The tenth self-portrait (though 11th artist) is of Bisco Hatori, mangaka of Ouran High School Host Club.
Like some of the early ones, it’s a self portrayal of themselves in the small break segments in their manga. There’s a bit of symbolism, as it’s a lot more simple in comparison to her normal art. Hatori is known to be lazy, so many consider the reason she did such a simple artstyle was due to how much quicker it would be.
I chose this because of how starkly different this small chibi is in comparison to her normal art. I like it when artists have different artstyles.
This one is a double. We have Matt Groening (left), creator of The Simpsons and Futarama, while on the right we have Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and American Dad.
This one is a more interesting case. Both of them are drawn in their respective cartoons artstyles (as Simpsons and Family Guy had a crossover), and trying to steal the others ideas in the picture (which is self-depreciation, as fans have noted similarities between their series).
I chose this because it has two Cartoon Artists that are well respected, and it has a unique spin on it, due to it having two artists.
The 8th Self-Portrait/Reprisentation is of Hiromu Arakawa, who’s most well known for being the artist for Fullmetal Alchemist.
Interestingly, she (yes, she) portrays herself as a cow with glasses, and occasionally with beer.
I chose this because of how starkly different it is, and how the artist actually chose to portray herself in a way that can be seen as self-depreciating.
