NEW LOVE
New Album. New Tour. New Love. Allison Weiss has just finished off her headline UK tour after the release of “New Love” which is not only my favourite album so far, but the most down to earth. Having the opportunity to hear my favourite songs such as ‘Golden Coast’ & ‘Back To Me’ in one of my favourite venues (The Joiners, Southampton) was a beautiful experience. Having seen Allison perform only solo (in the same venue) just over a year ago on tour with Rob Lynch, it was going to be an interesting event to compare and see how her songs differed. I can assure you the performance only transcended my expectations and somehow made even better with a cheeky bit of crowd participation to improve the night. Performing with the full band gave the songs that all important boost to the sound, making it richer and sweeter on the ear. In my opinion even Allison’s vocals have improved, not to say that her vocals last year were anything less than outstanding. Each track was in summary well executed and sounded incredibly similar to the studio versions (which is always a huge bonus personally). Her songs although sometimes discussing issues that we would consider emotional left me feeling positive and loving every second of hearing such talented musicians. If the music wasn’t enough then her personality definitely shined through and I mention this because I find her to be an inspirational character and pleasure to meet. Having a DIY feel and approach to her career certainly made the show more intimate and humbling to watch, however I did sense a slight obsession with Taylor Swift but I suppose thats always up for debate!
To see more photos visit the photoset by clicking here. With support from Yellowbird and Jenny Owen Youngs it would only seem right to bring them all on stage for a final collaboration which was performed perfectly and for me, summarised the whole atmosphere of the show. Creating a community feel, exploring the joys of music and simply playing for the reason I first fell in love with music in the first place, for my own enjoyment! The tour continued after me and went on to a sold out London show which I could only wish I was able to make, but it’s safe to say that the progression of Allison and the rest of the band is brilliant. The new album signifies maturity and an increased focus on quality and perfection and I have no doubt she will be returning to the UK soon!

Friday The 19th of February marked the release of the highly anticipated self-titled EP featuring the singles “Doubt” and “Foolish”. To accompany the new EP the band performed at The Drift Bar in Portsmouth with exceptional style. (SETLIST: INTRO, LATE LIGHT, NEVER WORTH IT, LIONESS, LEAVE IT ALONE, WINTER WAVES, NANCY, WITH YOU, CALI, FOOLISH, DOUBT) Right from the start, the energy that was delivered came naturally to the trio, with that all important cinematic and huge explosive sound coming across just as successfully as their studio versions. The music only complimented the band’s attitude and the positive energy just came out through each of their personalities and it was an absolute pleasure to witness. (I must admit I was singing along on the odd occasion!). To see how experienced and the quality of performance be of that standard for a band thats only been playing live for less than a year, it’s then that you start to realise there is some real potential future. Don’t just take my word for it though, Novellas have their next shows so soon so make sure to grab a ticket and watch them yourself!

NOVELLAS
There’s only one word to describe this band. HUGE.
From their sound to their aesthetic, the trio from Portsmouth have created something that many artists strive for and I believe is essential to becoming successful, an atmosphere. First performing in April 2015 they spent their first 8 months averaging a gig every 9 days. With a presence and style similar to JAWS and my thoughts of their inspiration possibly coming from bands such as Foals, Vampire Weekend, Peace and the odd bit of Swim Deep. They perfectly fit a vibe originating from late 80′s and 90′s Birmingham alternative scene so it makes me very happy to hear a similar sound coming from a new generation. It’s probably now that I should mention that the guys in Novellas have a new self titled EP coming out very soon! Accompanied with a release show in Portsmouth at the Drift Bar on the 19th February it’s going to be an absolute banger of a show.
The first single to have been released from the upcoming EP “Foolish” is a perfect rendition of music and its creative limit. Orchestrating powerful melody and using percussion to fill the ambient space with such an explosive presence, it’s an amazing track that I can only imagine live would blow open your senses with smooth yet rich vocals. The track has also been featured on BBC Introducing recently and received nothing but positive feedback and it’s not hard to work out why.
You can listen to “Foolish” on the band’s Souncloud here.
I was lucky enough to recently be sent the new track from the upcoming EP called “DOUBT”.
I haven't been able to stop listening to it since it came into my inbox and I can very easily say it’s one of the best songs that I've heard from an upcoming band in a very long time. The complexity and quality of each instrument perfectly blends together to make a track with a chorus designed for crowds and verses and instrumentals that will have you bouncing around the room continuously! (Admittedly I was constantly after multiple times of repeating it). This song, aswell as “Foolish”, were both recorded at the infamous Brighton Electric and the sound and clarity that is delivered through the tracks are insane. The final instrumental with a brilliant guitar piece is rewarding yet sad, a breathtaking experience that is only sad because it has to end at some point!
“Doubt” is most definitely going to be a great hit with listeners and it opens the door for even better performance and a brighter, more exciting future for the band. It’s clear that Novellas have well and truly established themselves and have a no nonsense approach and if they keep producing tracks like this I don’t think there’s going to be any way of stopping them soon.
I’m going to be photographing the upcoming release show where you can hear both “Foolish” and “Doubt”. RSVP and see where you can get tickets for it below:

It’s going to be one hell of a year for Novellas and I can’t wait to see how they develop and grow with their music. THE RELEASE SHOW - DRIFT BAR - 19TH FEB 2016 - TICKETS HERE AND OTD ONLY £5
DEAD NATIVES
An alternative garage/grunge band from London with a style and tone comparable to Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and most recognisably, Artic Monkeys. Their tracks as a collective entity pack some power whilst being carefully considered, a great blend for an ambitious and young band.
“Smoking Gun” is the debut EP for the quartet and signals to me straight away these guys are destined for impressive live performances with a beat and guitar punching its way through the speakers. It takes me back to a much more stripped down version of rock and is very raw but indefinitely works to entertain me and want more.
You can listen to the EP on their Soundcloud here.
The EP consists of three tracks; Smoking Gun, Feel Alright and In Spite Of The Rain. All of the songs carry a distinctive sound and a gruff yet intriguing voice that helps deliver their aesthetic.
Both “Smoking Gun” and “Feel Alright” are driven by pumping rhythm guitars that translate that 90/00′s perception taking away the unnecessary complications and weird tweaks that a majority of contemporary bands and artists exploit. It’s an original form of music that only allows the music to provide the message and reason that the guys first started performing and playing in the first place.
The third track “In Spite Of The Rain” is a much slower and calmer piece whilst in-keeping with the individual and distinctive style that Dead Natives have created for themselves. It signifies to me that the band are aware that to create good music it’s not always about how hard or how fast you can hit the drums.
A very active group, Dead Native have performed across London and even expanded to Brighton in their adventures. Catch them at their next shows:
FEB 13 @ The Lincoln Arms (Dorking) FEB 18 @ The Workshop (London)
MAR 10 @ Fiddlers Elbow (London) MAR 17 @ Tooting Tram + Social (London) MAR 18 @ The Good Ship (London)
APR 02 @ Dover Castle (Brighton) APR 03 @ Three Bridges FC (Three Bridges)
They are soon to record their second EP and it will be released around early April, so possibly expect some of the new music to be performed in Brighton! I see a lot of potential in this band and would like to see an increased focus on developing that style whilst throwing in a few more precisely worked melodies to correlate and overlay the rhythm guitar. With all taken into consideration, it could be an absolutely cracking EP.

ONE TO WATCH - SHALLOWS
Recently I came across Shallows, an indie-electronic duo consisting of Singer/Percussionist Jo Carson and, on guitar, Paul Gumma. The band, local to Winchester, have even played in the well known independent venue “Joiners” (Southampton) and will also soon be performing at “The Talking Heads” on the 10th of February. My initial thoughts when listening to their songs “AM” and “Enso” were of outstanding amazement! For a group that only have two recorded songs (with more soon on its way) the standard is impeccably high. “AM” in my opinion, draws me to an Alt-J sound but with a much more refined and sleek approach. The track draws you in with beautiful vocals and a beat that will entyse you deeper into the music. “Enso” sets the opposite end of the spectrum and creates an almost retro feel, the guitar reminding me of movie soundtracks originating from the 80′s. It certainly adds some cool atmosphere and ethos to the duo.
To listen to “AM” and “Enso” click here to go to their Soundcloud.
Shallows also recently performed a live session for “The Clubhouse” which should be available to watch and listen to in the near future. With the possibility of featuring new music, be sure to keep your eyes peeled. This follows the recent success after breaking onto the BBC Introducing scene on BBC Radio 6 after only handing a CD to Steve Lamacq at their most recent show in Southampton. The pair seem to be making their way in the right direction and I can’t wait to see how they develop and what music they produce!
As I previously mentioned, Shallows have a couple of shows lined up and I highly recommend checking these guys out. It’s a fresh new outlook for an electronically influenced band, combining different styles and manipulating instrument sound to form a diverse new presence on the local scene. To make sure you don’t miss out on anything to come, you can follow the band on social media linked below.

Promise Everything.
If there’s one thing that we all knew this new album had, it was a promise to be one of the best albums for Basement to ever produce and oh boy did they deliver.
Released only today, the band has had huge interest, especially since the band have created various different coloured pressings which make it just that little bit more special for all those vinyl enthusiasts out there! Being a collector myself I feel like after spending the past 28 minutes listening to the album, it’s a essential.
Admittedly at first, when the artwork was released I was a little sceptical and confused about the direction of the band. Having loved most of their discography (my favourite being the 7″ “Further Sky” with the incredible “Summers Colour”) I was hoping that this new LP would take my doubt away. I don’t know whether this was a good or bad thing to do, but I completely avoided listening to the single “Aquasun” until the release of the entire album as I thought it would give me a much fresher outlook on it.
I’m a man of tradition and feel an album should be listened to from track 1 right through to the last, so within 30 seconds of “Brother’s Keeper” I was ecstatic, this song includes a perfect bridge mixing the pace and tempo of 2011′s “I Wish I Could Stay Here” and the slow deep beat of previous LP “Covet”.
As we work through the songs it’s clear to see that the atmosphere around these tracks is meant to be much more distinctive and upbeat. I personally can imagine these performed live will provide a powerful dynamic range and I can’t wait to see them on their European tour this February with support from Tigers Jaw and Alex G.
It’s at this point that I come across “Aquasun” and it was at this point I realised the mistake I had made in waiting for the full release, an intelligently crafted wonder of a track perfectly placed to be the leading single. It eases you into a new era for Basement and shows off the quality and talent that has help crafted this album, it creates a focus point where I can individually listen to each instrument on its own and still love every second. The only downfall is that each song is 3 minutes long and you can help but crave more!
Now don’t get me wrong, “Submission”, “Oversized”, “Blinded Eye” and “For You The Moon” are absolute masterpieces and the album would be nothing without them but for purposes of not dragging this review into an essay, I’d like to talk about the song this album is named after.
“Promise Everything”. Maybe a really simple way to describe it is just pure Basement. This song belongs to them and it represents them and the style that they have progressed over the years to bring them to this point. A brilliant pinnacle point for the album and summary of months of hard work so you can safely assume that this will be a fan favourite. The raw power behind vocals, various guitar and drum pieces blew me away and I’m almost certain with an album as good as this, 2016 is going to be huge for Basement.
In conclusion, I’m very impressed by “Promise Everything” and would reccomend that if you’ve never listened to Basement or if you’re a fan of Title Fight, Balance & Composure and various other 90′s inspired punk/melodic hardcore artists then you NEED to check this out.
Conveniently, Angelah will be photographing the London show so look out for that in the future!

THE SUMMER SET ARE OFFICIALLY BACK!
So here are 3 things you need to know about the new age of The Summer Set.
1. The Arizona pop rockers released a new song on the 21st called “Figure Me Out”. It was released with an illuminating music video you can view here. You can definitely tell it’s a Summer Set tune with the melodic chords and lead up to an upbeat chorus filled with guitar, piano and thought provoking lyrics.
2. This single is to be a part of a new album they’re dropping called “Stories For Monday” on the 1st of April. Pre-order bundles, including notebooks and bracelets, are already set up so you can get your hands on physical copies/merch in time for the release date. Check out the UK pre-oders available here and the US pre-orders here.
And here’s the album art:
3. Additionally they have announced a world tour. That’s right - a WORLD tour! It all kicks off in North America this April, running through to the UK in May, then back to North America for 9 more dates, ending on the 1st of June.
As 2016 gets into full swing we looked at all the bands on our radar for this coming year and each picked out top 3 bands that you definitely need to keep tabs on.
Angelah’s Top 3:
1. Tonight Alive
Let’s face it, who isn’t looking forward to Tonight Alive’s come back this year? With a new album, fresh sound and a world tour on the cards it’s not hard to see why this Aussie bunch are something to be excited about - it’s the beginning of a whole new chapter for Tonight Alive. Want to find out all about it? Check out our previous post on “Limitless” here.
2. Set It Off
Recently Set It Off released a captivating music video for Duality to conclude the era of the Duality album and signify the start of the next era. 2015 certainly set the bar for what this band are capable of, and knowing Set It Off they are bound to go above and beyond expectations as they come storming into 2016 with a new album we can expect later this year. Let’s not forget they are also co-headlining with Tonight Alive on the “Fight For Something” tour around North America in March.
3. Beautiful Bodies
If you haven’t heard of Beautiful Bodies then think again. This alternative rock band have been around more than you might think. They’ve shared the stage with several bands from My Chemical Romance to Paramore and The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as even having their music features on an array of TV programs/adverts. Still not ringing a bell? Then I suggest you stream their debut album “Battles” here. 2015 saw this female fronted trio of rockers from Kansas head out on both the US and UK warped tours after the release of “Battles” on the 16th of June last year. This year I hope to see more of Beautiful Bodies getting the credit they deserve and on the 26th of January we’ll see them head out on tour across Europe supporting Mayday Parade, along with The Maine and Have Mercy.
Ash’s Top 3:
1. Moose Blood
The Canterbury boys are back at it again after just recently finishing recording of their second album to be released via No Sleep Records. Teasing us with photos and sneak previews of the studio, the album is announced to be released in 2016 and after many a request on social networks the band surely will be touring. If it’s anything similar to their debut album “I’ll Keep You In Mind From Time To Time” that took 2015 by storm (which was also rated number 9 in Rocksound’s “Top 50 Albums of The Year”) then we are sure in for a treat!
2. Enter Shikari
Ready to have your minds swept again this February? Enter Shikari will be gracing the UK and Europe with yet another instalment of their tour diary taking over the likes of Alexandra Palace and The Motorpoint! We've seen a slight preview of what is to come with Rou’s twitter showing him assembling light shows and discussing setlist possibilities. Not forgetting the arrival of recently released “Redshift” it’s sure to be a banger of a tour.
3. Knuckle Puck/Seaway/Boston Manor
I wanted to choose just one of them but I couldn't bring myself to leave any out. Together collaborating on a tour set to kick off March 29th in Southampton and end April 10th in Kingston is going to absolutely blow your mind. Copacetic alone is enough to sell out a show right? But the likes of Seaway’s “Colour Blind” (which could be debated as one of the best albums of 2015) and Boston Manor’s “Saudade” EP only ensure that it’s going to be an unforgettable show. I sure won’t be missing it and neither should you!
This is not to say these are the only bands that either of us are excited for this year and it also seems a little unfair and unjust to have favourites. However it’s safe to say there is something for us ALL to look forward to in 2016.

A singer/songwriter from Essex that has a beautifully distinctive voice, inspired by the great Katie Melua and already writing and performing there's no denying that Kiera Court has passion from such an early stage. Recording with a small camera in the bathroom of her own home and uploading onto YouTube, she’s managed to perfectly rework covers of the industry greats such as Paolo Nutini and James Bay. This raw talent alongside writing her own songs shows some great potential for the 19 year old. If you want to check some of her songs click HERE.
Kiera has already found herself on the stage after performing a solo acoustic show in Shoreditch, a delightful christmas surprise for locals! Her performance and stage presence coming to her almost naturally, she provides a calm and welcoming get away from the busy thundering streets of London. I believe with the right direction and continued work effort everything is already on track. Balancing her passion alongside being a full-time student in London is already quite a task so I applaud the bravery, dedication and attitude that she has adopted towards this hobby. Least to mention the fact that she will be featured on BBC Radio Essex as part of the introducing campaign this evening! You can listen online at www.bbc.co.uk/bbcessex to hear her track “Cinnamon” between 8-9pm, I assure you that if you miss out you will deeply regret it. If you do by some unfortunate disaster miss out, you can check out some more songs (Including Cinnamon) on her soundcloud here. I consider myself very lucky to know such a talent and can only wish the very best for Kiera and hope that there’s nothing but positives from here. I for sure will be keeping a close eye and I urge her or anyone with similar ambition to not stop and keep on creating!
