Xena and Gabrielle + Hands
*i wanted to say like how anthy and utena are the 'same'(the twin castor and pollux etc etc) the same could be said with nemuro(mikage) and dios(akio) im just bad at talking
it sneww hahaha amiright guys
I just want to say thank you for this! I’ve been thinking about this post so much lot and wanted to share some of my own thoughts as well.
Nemuro is also the only character without a surname and given how significant he is within the arc I feel like that’s intentional and a subtle hint that he’s Ainu. From my understanding, Ainu naming conventions usually often involve a single descriptive name. I am not at all Ainu, but I am Indigenous and part of a northern Indigenous circumpacific peoples like the Ainu. In many Indigenous cultures naming conventions usually reflect the land and surnames are often, though not always, an external imposition (The name given to me in my language literally translates to “night sky” for example). Here, Nemuro is clearly meant to reference the city in Hokkaido as you mentioned but more specifically the city name Nemuro is also an Ainu place name. That makes me wonder if it’s possible this is simply his full name, which would explain why he isn’t given a surname like everyone else.
I remember reading an analysis that suggested Nemuro’s memories likely take place in the 1930s-40s based on details like the 100 boys being all men, the technology used and the fashion. I agree with this, especially since “living computers” were predominantly people (women mostly) up until the 1940s. Mikage’s final words also mention that it’s been decades since he last saw Mamiya, which implies at least twenty years have passed from whenever present-day Ohtori is set. This is relevant because the early twentieth century was also when some of the most violent assimilationist policies against the Ainu in Japan began, so I don’t think it’s a stretch to suggest that Nemuro is, at the very least, Ainu-Japanese.
That being said, it’s heavily implied that Nemuro chose the name Souji Mikage for himself. Taking a character from Tokiko’s name fits with my interpretation that Nemuro was very much shaped by Tokiko’s likely unintentional manipulation, which led him to internalize a very specific self-image of a genius, a living computer, a superior being, and ultimately someone not fully human and fundamentally separate from others. Mikage clearly attempts to live up to these labels and tries to perform them through his behaviour and especially through his efforts to embody heteronormativity and social normalcy. Tokiko and Akios influence shaped a very significant portion of his identity. At the same time, I think changing his name to be Japanese can also be understood as an effort to create distance from Nemuro and what that name represents, and instead adopting a constructed identity that feels safer and more socially acceptable within Ohtori.
The racial dynamics in RGU are never explicitly addressed within Ohtori but they are clearly deeply present. Like, the series uses Anthy’s identity to intersect patriarchy with racialization and colorism which shows how these systems consistently sacrifice and place blame on dark-skinned women. And Nemuro is clearly incredibly ostracized from everyone. So I do definitely think he can and should be read this way!

Need y’all to know that in the 1970’s a letter to the editor was published in Daily Telegraph where the author offhandedly used the phrase “Tolkien-like gloom” to describe an area with barren trees and JRRT himself wrote back an incensed rebuttal at the use of his name in a context that suggested anything negative about trees.
“I feel that it is unfair to use my name as an adjective qualifying ‘gloom’, especially in a context dealing with trees. In all my works I take the part of trees as against all their enemies”
He was like how dare you sir I am the biggest tree fan out there
A tree tried to eat the hobbits. Tom Bombadil had to save them. There's Mirkwood, "The Forest of Great Fear." I'm on the side of the writer of the letter to the editor.
Because Tolkien is Tolkien, he actually directly defended the actions of all his forests and trees in this same letter I’m referencing
@businesstiramisu !!!!
This is the best thing in the entire world. I love how much Tolkien loved trees and how fiercely he defended them. Here is a transcript:
Beautiful place because trees are loved From Prof. J.R.R. TOLKIEN SIR—with reference to your leader of June 29, I feel that it is unfair to use my name as an adjective qualifying “gloom,” especially in a context dealing with trees. In all my works I take the part of trees as against all their enemies. Lothlorien is beautiful because there the trees were loved; elsewhere forests are represented as awakening to consciousness of themselves. The Old Forest was hostile to two-legged creatures because of the memory of many injuries. Fangorn Forest was old and beautiful, but at the time of the story tense with hostility because it was threatened by a machine-loving enemy. Mirkwood had fallen under the domination of a Power that hated all living things, but it was restored to beauty and became Greenwood the Great before the end of the story. It would be unfair to compare the Forestry Commission with Sauron because, as you observe, it is capable of repentance; but nothing it has done that is stupid compares with the destruction, torture and murder of trees perpetrated by private individuals and minor official bodies. The savage sound of the electric saw is never silent wherever trees are still found growing. J.R.R. TOLKIEN Merton College, Oxford

one of the trials i must endure is that watching somebody else play a video game is excruciatingly boring to me. but i have also had too many experiences where somebody decides mid date that they aren't interested in me and/or don't want to have sex but instead of asking me to leave they're like wanna watch me play elden ring in dead silence for the next 3 hours
maybe i shouldn't be too hard on video games cause arguably the worst date i've ever been on in my life was when i met this girl off tinder and went over to her highly populated punk house and instead of having sex she wanted to watch the entire first season of trailer park boys with her approx. 20-30 roommates present. at one point i asked her hey do you wanna go back to your room and she said, quote, "nah i'm good"
and it was late at night and she lived pretty far away from me and the buses weren't running anymore so i was just trapped there watching the entire first season of trailer park boys wishing i had a cyanide capsule to bite down on
