I was listening to Ursula Le Guin's interview from 2014 and wrote down this quote (I know, she has many good quotes and I love her books), but this is sort of as a reminder to myself. When feeling art-blocked, anxious about relevance of anything I do as an artist in this state of the world, and not knowing what to do, kind of overthinking about what the world feels like it needs and what I personally make...
"I try to not have a message. Messages are for texting something (ā¦) I donāt think any art is rightly done if itās just delivering a message. That would mean the message is the real thing and the art is just sort of like cake decoration, fancy ornaments to make the message edible or pretty.
I think working on any practise of any art (ā¦) you are opening yourself up to a mysterious force and to have a message in your mind all the time is going to block that force, and it cannot speak through you. And I think you have to trust it knows things much better than you do"
-Ursula Le Guin
āItās like those caravans, the wagon trains that crossed our country a hundred years ago in search of a new home. Or the ships that sailed across the Atlantic in search of a new world. Taking on these great challenges against great odds⦠thatās what makes us human.
āRemember, we chose to go to the Moonā¦ā
āSo, yes. Yes, I think itās worth it.ā
