Pomegranate symbolism

Alright so we all remember when mikasa was about to give up but still fought despite having no gas and thinking eren was dead right. But then she kept fighting and didn’t know why.

And then this pomegranate shows up.

Well here’s the thing. Pomegranates are the fruit of fertility, death, rebirth and hope symbolically. If you don’t want to take my word for it click this link

As far as I’m concerned there are 2 ways of looking at this that work equally as well. 

1) Looking at it in terms of Eren’s “death”/”rebirth”:

Death:  Everyone thought Eren was dead, pretty self explanatory.

Rebirth: He came back as a titan-shifter, also self-explanatory.

Hope: He becomes a symbol of hope for humanity and allows humanity it’s first victory against the titans

Fertility: I’m gonna just let this be explained in the Mikasa version of this because it’s the same logic. If you were wondering why this was in the eremika tag…..yea we’re about to go there.

2) Looking at it in terms of Mikasa and how Eren impacted her:

Death/rebirth: I decided to lump these 2 together because this one panel explains it perfectly.

Mikasa “died” when the slavers killed her family and kidnapped her. She was reborn when Eren gave her a new home, a new life. You could also say she died and was reborn mentally, since she lost her outlook on life/reason to live and then was reborn as the badass we know and love now who realizes how “cruel but beautiful” the world is.

Hope: Eren gave Mikasa hope when he gave her a new life. That much is certain. But I want to point out that even when she thought he was dead he still gave her a reason to keep going, keep fighting. Because that’s what he taught her, he gave her the tools to live again even on her own. In essence, even if he was gone, he would still give her enough hope for the future because of what she learned in their time together. 

Fertility: Ok, well the basic logic here is that, Mikasa loves Eren, he comes back. Mikasa’s dream of having a family and all that. That sort of thing. This is basically the only way I can even think of interpreting this kind of symbolism and I know some people will fight me on this but
