Hello! Did you know that 二哈和他的白猫师尊 (The Husky and His White Cat Shizun) has a full-cast, professionally-produced audiobook in Chinese? And that the voice acting is fantastic? And that it will make you cry? Well, I'm here to rant about it until my fingers fall off.

The main cast is 谷江山 (Gu Jiang Shan) as Mo Ran, 三石 (San Shi) as Chu Wanning, and 倔强的小红 (Jue Jiang De Xiao Hong) as the narrator. You may recognize Gu Jiang Shan as the voices of Xiao Se from The Blood of Youth and Wangquan Hongye from Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Love in Pavilion. He's impressive at separating Mo Ran's different phases and identities, from snot-nosed brat to 2.0 to Taxian-jun. But it's San Shi who’s the runaway star, in my opinion. His Chu Wanning is not only the perfect voice, but has a very impressive emotional range. There is a host of other characters and production staff; you can find the full list on the audiobook's Mao'Er FM page.

NSFW parts: The actual sex is fade-to-black in this audiobook; however, this doesn't mean the sound effects aren't…vivid…at times. Parts of this audiobook are definitely not safe for work, no matter what language you speak. The kissing is made to be very audible, and memorably, the Rufeng sky sex tape was not fade-to-black.

Anyway, I wanted to talk about this audio production with other people, but the triple requirements of "interested in Erha," "speaks Mandarin," and "willing to commit to 600 episodes" narrow down potential listeners too severely. So I'm subtitling some parts that struck me as particularly good, in English.

This isn't meant to be a replacement for listening to the audiodrama as a whole, since I'm only clipping bits here and there. If you are interested in listening to the whole thing, it's on Mao'Er FM and Ximalaya, and I highly recommend. (Caveated by the usual 2Ha content warnings and occasional NSFWness, of course.) There are two audio productions titled "二哈和她的白猫师尊," and the one that's being subtitled by this blog is the one by "打谷机."

Nighttime "conversation", pt. 2

Upon realizing several things, Mo Ran tries to ask Chu Wanning about the brocade pouch with their tied hair. Unfortunately, he does this not knowing whether Chu Wanning is awake or asleep, the latter out of sight behind gauzy bedcurtains. Chu Wanning listens to Mo Ran and grows exquisitely anxious.

And then, he covered up his eyes too, His whole body hidden under the quilt. Of course he heard. But he didn't know how to reply. His heart pounded, and sweat covered his palms. Embarrassingly, he felt like he'd been forced into a dead end. He might as well sit up suddenly and shout, full of daring: [Chu Wanning VO] Yes, I hid away that goddamn pouch, I like you, are you satisfied? Go away, stop asking, go to sleep! [Narrator] He felt tormented and upset, and longing scratched at his heart. [Mo Ran] Shizun? He's really asleep.

On Flying Flower Isle, Mo Ran is tormented by the possibility that Chu Wanning just might requite his love. He tries to talk to Chu Wanning in the middle of the night while his shizun pretends to sleep, obscured from Mo Ran's sight by the hanging bedcurtains.

It was— [Narrator] It was very quiet within the hangings. [Mo Ran] Do you know What it was? [Narrator] The words were on the tip of his tongue, but he was suddenly nervous. How could he ask Chu Wanning this so clumsily? Silence from the other stretched for a long time. Mo Ran hesitated, his eyes damp and black. [Mo Ran] Shizun. Are you still awake? Did you hear me talking? [Narrator] On the bed obscured by the gauzy curtains, Chu Wanning did not move, As if he were really asleep. Mo Ran waited for a long time, not satisfied. A few times he wanted to reach and pull the curtains back, But paused halfway. [Mo Ran] Shizun. [Narrator] He muttered this, then laid down again. His voice was very quiet and a little soft: [Mo Ran] Pay attention to me.

Go to sleep!

On Flying Flower Island, Mo Ran knows about Chu Wanning's secret pouch containing their locks of hair, and Chu Wanning knows he knows. This makes choosing their sleeping arrangements very awkward. They both avoid taking the initiative, all the while creating more and more spiritual butterflies and crabapple flowers to sell the next day.

The specific motion they're doing is "捻," twisting with their fingers, to make flowers and butterflies come into existence.

[Narrator] Even though this man was feeling more and more dangerous, If Mo Ran really laid down on the bed, Chu Wanning wouldn't make him leave. Three copper coins

After the destruction of Rufeng Sect, Mo Ran and Chu Wanning find themselves on a remote isle and in need of money. Chu Wanning sits down to make some of his signature sound-recording crabapple blossoms.

Golden light glowed on his handsome face, his inky eyelashes. He said, laughing: [Mo Ran] That Third Lady Sun is probably going to beg crying for Shizun to sell her some. Shizun, how much do you plan to sell each flower for? [Chu Wanning] Even a hundred blossoms don't take that much energy. Three copper coins a flower. How is that? [Narrator] Chu Wanning glanced at him again, Wrinkling his brow slightly, and said hesitantly: [Chu Wanning] Too much? [Narrator] Mo Ran sighed lightly. He didn't say it was too much, nor too little. He only said: [Mo Ran] Tomorrow, don't price the flowers. Let me sell them. [Chu Wanning] Why? I made the flowers. I'll set the price. [Mo Ran] Three copper coins. [Narrator] Mo Ran extended three fingers, waving them in front of Chu Wanning, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. [Mo Ran] Shizun, you're the Beidou Immortal, And these are your Night Haitang. Rare even in the cultivation world. You're selling them for — three copper coins? [Chu Wanning] No one ever asks for them. He muttered: [Mo Ran] Shizun knew very well I didn't have any money, and you still— [Chu Wanning] You boasted it yourself; you said you wanted to buy me.

Does it hurt?

The fight against Nangong Liu and Xu Shuanglin has begun; they have ripped open a portal to the deep underworld. Mo Ran and Chu Wanning arrive to fight them, but Chu Wanning is wounded.

Fishing

Mo Ran and Chu Wanning race wolves at Rufeng Sect and end up in an idyllic fruit grove. Nangong Si has promised a valuable prize to the first one to return with ten grouper fish.

Chu Wanning is being somewhat formal when he talks to the fish, addressing them as 尔等 ér děng, a literary way to say "you all," and using more compacted diction than is usual for casual speech.

Then he spoke coolly toward the lake: [Chu Wanning] Who amongst you has lived your fill? Those willing, get on a hook. [Narrator] He said this thrice; Then Chu Wanning reeled Tianwen in. On those dazzling golden leaves, there really were a few fat-headed fish Resignedly showing the whites of their eyes, Gazing skyward while spitting bubbles. Chu Wanning looked at them, then turned to Mo Ran and asked: [Chu Wanning] Did he say he wanted groupers? [Mo Ran] Uh-huh. [Chu Wanning] Do you recognize what groupers look like? [Narrator] As soon as Chu Wanning said this, He felt he was being too indirect. He might as well raise the whole of Tianwen up And let Mo Ran look at all the fish he had caught. [Chu Wanning] Out of these, Are there any? [Mo Ran] Perhaps it's better if I do the fishing for Shizun.

Not that kind of like

"Shizun, I like you." Mo Ran says these words while kneeling at his shizun's feet at the end of their stay in Yulin village. Both are mistaken about the nature of this liking, and their internal thoughts follow.

In the woods behind Yulin Village, Lin'er asks Mo Ran what kind of person he likes. Mo Ran sinks into a contemplation that skirts close to certain truths, until he finally comes to a realization.

Foot massage

I'll stand with you

After Mo Ran and Chu Wanning encounter each other in Miaoyin Pool, they head back together, but it starts to rain. Mo Ran opens an umbrella barrier to keep them dry, and says he wants to hold umbrellas over Chu Wanning for a lifetime. At Chu Wanning's request, he kneels down and repeats what he said. Chu Wanning's response:

The white figurine's had its head brushed by his fingertip. It let out a cold grunt and said, [Chu Wanning figurine] Stop this insolence! [Narrator] Xue Zhengyong was laughing so much, tears were almost running from his eyes. [Xue Zhengyong] This one's good, this one's good. You put some spiritual sound filling in them too, right? Ha, this little thing imitating Yuheng's tone of voice Is really close, huh? [Chu Wanning] Nonsense! [Narrator] But he still took the clay figurines back carefully, Put them back into the box, And placed it next to him.

A Speech

Mo Ran, Mo Ran

The heavenly rift has been closed, Mo Ran has been gravely wounded, and Chu Wanning has walked away without so much as a backward glance. Mo Ran falls unconscious and comes to as someone is calling his name.

The phrase "like almond flowers in Jiangnan," 如江南杏花, seems to allude to a Yuan-dynasty poem called 风入松 fēng rù sōng, Wind Entering the Pines. The end of the poem goes:

报道先生归也，杏花春雨江南

Report that xiansheng has returned home, The almond blossoms and spring rain are in Jiangnan.

So Jiangnan is the scene of homecoming, sketched out visually in terms of flowers and rain, among other things. Perhaps the description of almond blossoms for Chu Wanning's eyes is meant to recall the warmth and relief of returning to a place where you belong.

The person in front of him had phoenix eyes like the almond flowers in Jiangnan. His face was ghost-white and had traces of blood on it. Mo Ran watched him with his heart beating fast. He'd never on Chu Wanning's face Seen this kind of expression. His shizun had always been mild and indifferent. But the person in front of him Was weeping.
