Bits of advice I find myself giving to couples over and over again when booking music for their wedding ceremony:
Itās your day. Youāre paying
Your musician will not judge you for your music choices
I mean, if you choose some sort of racist chant or something, yeah, youāll be judged, but if you desperately want to walk in to A Thousand Years and back out again to Benny Hill, thatās your choice and your musician will accommodate you (and probably have a lot of fun doing so!)
So what if youāve heard Pachelbelās Canon at every wedding youāve ever been to? If you love it, have it played
You want some nod to your childhood/ culture/ random memory with your partner/ etc? Go for it! The day is about the two of you!
That said, pay attention to deadlines if you have special requests your musician(s) will need to source. Theyāre there for a reason
If youāre stuck, your musician will give you suggestions for key points for your ceremony, but donāt expect them to choose. Music is a deeply personal thing, and again, the day is about you and your partner
Try not to micromanage the pre-ceremony/ reception music- having a few requests that are special to you (but didnāt make the cut for the ceremony) are fine, but trying to choose enough to fill the time will stress you out, and is unnecessary. Your musician will have a folder full of popular music- I donāt even ask for selections for background music before and after
If thereās a song you really hate/ a genre you canāt stand, let your musician know- weāre here to help you put your personal stamp on the day
Saying you want a certain āvibeā isnāt particularly helpful- one personās romantic is another personās āthis is cringe, kill me nowā. Try to give examples of the sort of music that gives you that vibe- itās a lot easier to construct a set from, say, Michael BublĆ©, Frank Sinatra and Dinah Washington, than āsoft romantic vibesā
