Lightning flashes in this region of the Arctic are extremely rare.
Most lightning around the world occurs from the equator into the middle latitudes, as depicted in pink above. This is a region of the world where the warm and unstable conditions needed to form thunderstorms are most often found.

The fires could create a feedback loop that only worsens the effects of climate change and leads to more fires.
It’s normal for fires to burn through Arctic ecosystems — but not ones this big or emitting this much carbon dioxide. So far this year, the fires have let loose more than 140 million tons, as much as Belgium emits in a year. As the fires burn, they also consume peat, or the degraded biomass that gives Scotch its distinctive taste and stores carbon. As that carbon gets released into the atmosphere, it only heats the planet more.
The Greenland ice sheet covers an area the size of Alaska with enough ice to raise global sea level by more than 20 feet.
During the past week, temperatures at the highest reaches of the Greenland ice sheet rose above freezing, melting snow at the Summit Station (10,550 feet above sea level) for the first time since July 2012 and perhaps only the third time in the last seven centuries.
Across lower elevations around the margins of the ice sheet, bare glacial ice melted at an unprecedented rate, losing 12.5 billion tons of water on Thursday alone, with daily losses likely exceeding any point in at least the past 70 years.
World is on track for 2015 to 2019 to be the 5 hottest years on record
The latest data from the World Meteorological Organization shows the month of July “at least equalled if not surpassed the hottest month in recorded history” — and it followed the hottest June ever, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Thursday.
The UN chief told reporters that “this is even more significant because the previous hottest month, July 2016, occurred during one of the strongest El Niño’s ever,” which was not the case this year.
An El Niño is a natural warming of the ocean that once it interacts with the atmosphere often warms up the globe and changes rainfall and temperature patterns, making some places wetter and some places drier.
Guterres said the latest weather data, including temperature-shattering records from New Delhi and Anchorage to Paris, Santiago, Adelaide, Australia and the Arctic Circle, means the world is on track for the period from 2015 to 2019 “to be the five hottest years on record.”
He warned that if all nations don’t take immediate action to tackle climate change, extreme weather events happening now “are just the tip of the iceberg.”

Weather models indicate Tuesday’s temperature may have surpassed 75 degrees Fahrenheit in some regions of Greenland, and a weather balloon launched near the capital Nuuk measured all-time record warmth just above the surface. That heat wave is still intensifying, and is expected to peak on Thursday with the biggest single-day melt ever recorded in Greenland. On August 1 alone, more than 12 billion tons of water will permanently melt away from the ice sheet and find its way down to the ocean, irreversibly raising sea levels globally.
Unusual wildfires across Siberia, Scandinavia, Alaska, and Greenland have been raging all summer, and by one estimate released about 50 million tons of carbon dioxide in the month of June alone — equivalent to the annual emissions of Sweden. In Switzerland, some glaciers melted so rapidly during last week’s heatwave that they sent swirling mudflows racing downhill. In the Arctic Ocean, sea ice is at a record-low extent as the melt season continues to lengthen. In Alaska, ecosystems are rapidly changing, especially in the Bering Sea region where this year’s ice-free season began in February.
