“Yeah, that sounds like it,” Cora responded with a nod. She listened to him as he explained about the church. “Yeah! It kind of looks like a small Notre Dame de Paris, right? Or is 8 year old me remembering this wrong?” Cora gave a smile. “I want to start over somewhere. And France is lovely. Is… Are you fluent in French?”

“No, I think you’re remembering correctly,” Eric said, smiling back before answering her question. “Yeah, I speak it fluently. Do you speak any?”

“It’s not even sad, it’s just… pitiful. I mean, why the fuck would anyone do something like that?” she asks, shaking her head, “She probably just shits money out her fucking arse, there’s no other explanation… I’m Layla, by the way.” she says, realizing she forgot to introduce herself.

Eric laughed at her candor before formally introducing himself, “I’m Eric.”

“Perfect date night idea would be karaoke.” Martin cheered. “You get your studying in, I get wasted. I think it would be absolutely perfect for the both of us.” Martin joked. “My dad has done business with some people before, maybe we can talk to them sometime. I need to hear you sing before we can do that though.”

“Oh I love karaoke! That would be such a fun date,” Eric agreed excitedly. “But how am I supposed to properly romance you if you’re wasted?” Eric ask half jokingly and half disapprovingly. “And yeah that would be really cool, and I guess you’ll get to hear me sing on our date. Or maybe you could drop by during choir practice sometime.”

Hey, Roommate|Eric and Lenny

A combination of natural light from the window and warm tones from a single lamp illuminated Eric as he sat hunched over at the small wooden desk positioned in the far corner of his dorm room. One of his elbows rested on the tabletop, his hand propping up his tired head, while the other hand held a pen tapping rhythmically against the notebook he was currently writing in. He was dressed comfortably in pajama pants and a sweater bearing the school’s crest, not bothering to put any more effort into what he wore since he hadn’t planned on leaving the dorm until at least the next hour or so.

The dorm room itself was fairly sparse as far as decor goes, seeing as Eric had only recently been accepted and moved into the school. Within his short time of living here, however, he had tried to make the room feel cozy, feel like his--a Star Wars calendar was hung on the wall, a small flower from his family farm sat by the window, a picture of his friends from Quebec stood on his nightstand, comfortably worn sheets draped his twin bed, and a small Canadian flag was tucked in a jar of writing utensils that sat on the desk. The other half of the room, however, was completely bare--no posters or pictures adorned the walls, no personal knickknacks littered the area, the sheets on the bed were neatly made and unwrinkled. It was just empty and waiting.

Eric remained in his position at the desk for a while, the sky outside already beginning to fade to a deep orange-y purple. He didn’t look up from his work until he heard the door click as the handle was turned to open it. He usually left the door unlocked when he wasn’t sleeping, so he figured it could be anyone he knew to walk through the door. He was surprised to find an unfamiliar face standing in the doorway looking back at him.

“Good boy. I knew I liked you for a reason. Let’s go!” Martin cheered as he helped Eric pack up his things. Martin clung onto Eric’s hand the whole time and walked with him through the halls. “So farmer boy, what were you working on. I saw those music notes.”

Eric walked down the mostly quiet hallway, his fingers entwined with the younger boy’s, the other hand curled around his textbook. He smiled fondly and playfully bumped Martin’s shoulder with his own at the ‘farmer boy’ comment before answering, “I was just reading over some vocal techniques for choir and my vocal class. I mean, I came to this school mostly for singing, so I should put in the work. And...” He paused to look at the tiled floor and gather his thoughts, continuing on a bit bashfully despite himself, “...I don’t know, it’s more than that. Singing has always been really important to me, and if I want to have any chance at continuing it after high school I have to work hard for it.”

She shook her head, scoffing, “She’s probably just a super rich bitch that’s been spoiled so much through out her life whole life, she genuinely just gets a thrill out of making people miserable because she has it all and doesn’t care, you know? Her money probably just got to her head, or maybe she’s a serial killer, who knows?”

Eric nodded sadly, “You’re probably right.” He simultaneously felt disgust and pity for whoever this person was who thought spreading negativity like that was okay. “It’s sad though, that someone could be so hateful.”

“Finally! Someone gets it!” She said, a wide smile in her lips. “I was watching Missing You, by All Time Low. Damn, I love that song and the video is just… perfect”

Eric thought for a moment to see if the song title rang any bells, but he came up short, “I’ve never heard the song.” He chuckled and added, “but I guess it’s pretty good if it got that reaction from you.”

“I hate to admit it, but there are some music videos that just… get me emotional” she laughed, looking up from her phone.

“I know what you mean.” Eric related while remembering back to a few music videos that had threatened to bring tears to his eyes. “Which one were you watching?”

She gave him a small smile, “Thank you.” she responded. “Unique? More like complete targets,” she thought back on the gossip blog and what a bitch she was to druggies and foreigners. She personally didn’t care, it just annoyed her, “Yours is fine, but mines is a tad bit too thick, makes me a perfect target for whoever the fuck runs the gossip blog. Not that I care or anything, she’s just annoying.” she shrugged.

Eric considered what she was saying, not really having thought about that before. “Yeah I guess that kind of sucks, it’s good that you don’t care though, you shouldn’t.” Referring to the gossip blogger, he added, “I mean if someone is dedicating that much time to trying to hurt people, they must have some serious issues of their own.”

“I remember a big church,” Cora thought aloud. “I think, at least. I was like 9 when we went. But, I agree. I love old buildings like that. Like they have in France. I want to go to France after highschool. It would be different, y’know?”

“Maybe it was the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal?” Eric suggested. “It’s one of the oldest churches in Montreal and the interior is French inspired.” He reconsidered for a moment before adding with a slight chuckle, “But there are a lot of impressive churches in Montreal, so I suppose it could be any of them.” He listened to the girl and agreed, “Yeah, it would be different, I think that would be an awesome trip after high school.”

“I should get you for playing dirty tricks on me.” Martin hummed as he hugged Eric as tight as possible. “I also moved out today so I need some help carrying my desktop today.” Martin told him as he grabbed Eric’s hand. “Come on! Let’s hurry. And you can bring all your stuff and study afterwards.”

Eric smiled as he wrapped his arms around Martin and hugged back just as tightly before Martin broke the embrace, moved to hold Eric’s hand, and lifted him up off the bed. Eric barely had time to quickly scoop up his music textbook and cheekily respond, “Well how could I abandon you in your time of need?” before being led out of his dorm room by his boyfriend.

Martin held out his hands at the man’s statement. He could see the man’s decision in his eyes. Martin could play this game too. “Oh, but a big strong handsome farmer man like you, I think you can skip one miserable night of studying to be with me. Plus, you know I’ve got something better than a bunch of books.” Martin wiggled his ass and pushed hard against Eric as an attempt to tackle him.

Although Eric probably could have easily held his ground if he wanted, he let the other boy overpower him and land on top of him as they fell back onto his bed. He laughed before giving an over dramatic sigh and looking up at Martin, “I guess you’re too strong for me.” He pecked Martin on the lips before finally acquiescing, “And who could say no to that offer.”

She shook her head, “I don’t mind. Bulgaria. That’s why my accent is weird… and hard to understand sometimes.” she stated, surprised he was even catching up to what she was saying. People here always told her to repeat herself or talk slower.

“I think your accent’s nice,” he replied genuinely. “I felt a little weird about my accent when I moved here at first, but I’ve been trying to embrace it.” While his French accent wasn’t as pronounced as her Bulgarian one, due to having grown up attending bilingual schools, there was still a noticeable lilt to his voice from the French he spoke at home. “I guess it just makes us a bit unique here.”

“Hey cutie pie.” Martin cheered as he walked into the the other’s room. “I was wondering where you were hiding.” The boy walked straight up to him and pressed his lips firmly against his boyfriend’s. “I moved out of the dorms and mom and dad aren’t going to be home tonight, I was wondering if maybe –” Martin’s finger’s walked up the man’s chest. “Maybe you would like to come over.”

Eric sat on his bed with a textbook in his hands; he looked up from his studying when he heard the door to his dorm open to see Martin walking into the room. “Well you found me,” he responded playfully before pushing his textbook to the side and leaning up to kiss his boyfriend. He smiled mischievously when he heard what Martin was suggesting, and although he had already made up his mind, he decided to mess with the other boy a bit. He put on a look of feigned contemplation before debating out loud, “Hm, I don’t know...I have a lot of studying to do.”

“Not neat, more like confusing to what you know.” that’s how she felt with English sometimes.

“It can be, I still find it kind of interesting though,” Eric replied, tending to see the beauty in most situations. Noticing Layla also had an accent, he wondered aloud, “Where are you from? If you don’t mind my asking.”

“Maybe when I have the time,” Cora agreed. “I liked it a lot. It’s a lot prettier than Toronto. It’s very… I dunno. It seems quaint for being a fairly big city.”

“Yeah I know what you mean,” Eric agreed nostalgically. “Despite being quite modern and tourist-y, there are some amazing parts of the city--especially Old Montreal; the old buildings are quite beautiful.”
