An Unextraordinary Day

We stayed in bed

watching her on the nest cam, looking at pictures in a book

that she pulled from under her blankets

a small intrusion on her privacy

that we still enjoy

She ran in at 8

requesting cat videos, we indulged her

to buy more time

to pretend the world isn’t out there with all of its

demands and bustling energy

Waffles and bacon

Dad Breakfast

Watering flowers long neglected

Making love during the afternoon nap

Flying her on my feet, as I lay in the grass

in our backyard

Cooking, eating, dancing, singing

A warm bath, then

Off to dreams

Climb

A tingle

in the soles of my feet

like a little voice

whispers

“Be careful,

you’re not used to this.”

The height, the climb, the adventure

Then, like a shot

her big voice cries

“Do it again Mommy!”

A rush

pushing me up, up, up

toward the sky, the light

Love, Risk, Joy, Fear
