Calm before the storm || Edgar & Open
Maybe I’d do better if I could forget. His words echoed in her ears, sounding even more haunting mingled with the eerie sound of the wind and the waves. It had been a thought that had tormented her as well, during some of her many sleepless nights since they arrived at the Port.
If she could turn back time, she would do it without a second thought. Go back to days filled with laughter and the clinking of glasses instead of screams, tears and surrendered sighs. But she had long ago understood that this was just a distant fantasy, something she could close her eyes and dream about when she got into bed. Sometimes it would even bring a genuine smile to her face and those nights, maybe she would sleep for more than a couple of hours.
But what if she could forget it all and leave it behind? If the memory of the warmth and coziness of the Three Broomsticks stopped making her skin tingle with longing to feel it again, perhaps she could be more useful. She could start envisioning a better future instead of wanting to bring back a demolished past and work harder for a brighter tomorrow for her and the Mud Club.
That was one of the things she admired the most about Edgar. His ability to have hope about what lay ahead of them. Where she saw only more blood or, in the rare case of a slightly more optimistic day, just the complete unknown, he saw something. She wished she could find that single ray of sunshine amongst all the darkness and hold on to it, work towards it and build something out of it.
But this wasn’t her.
His words had been a complete contradiction. No, this wasn’t home, at least not to her. She had burned down her home the night they departed from Hogsmeade. But she had made sure to take a piece of it with her, and that piece was the Mud Club, and she would do anything to protect it. And if that meant leaving Port Montrose, she would be happy to oblige.
She couldn’t tell him all that. She was too scared she would ruin Edgar’s optimism and probably even more scared of his judgement. But at times like this, she couldn’t help but let pieces of her thoughts slip out, even if she would regretted immediately.
“Yes, we’re all they have. But they are all I have as well.”
Edgar never realized how much she had given up that night they decided to leave for Port Montrose. He knew that she lost the one place that she had called home for all these years, but she lost something more then that. She had lost her family, she lost everything.
And while some could argue that maybe others had lost more then she had, Edgar knew how it felt to be in a situation similar to her own. He knew that no matter how little she lost, the pain was still the same. Guilt knew no difference. She hadn’t said much about how Edgar’s brilliant idea had affect not only the group but herself as well. Part of him realized that maybe he was selfish bringing the mud club here. Sure, they were safer here, but was their safety is main concern?
Part of him still believed that his sister was out there. He believed that he spent so much time and energy on trying to find any traces of her or to get new information about what everyone knew of her disappearance. He realized how desperate he had gotten to make sure that the only part of him past was still alive somewhere, no even bothering to make sure that these people he promised to protect were okay. That’s when Edgar knew he had to change. He had to stop daydreaming about the impossible and make sure that he was doing everything in his will to win this losing war. He would but their needs in front of his own. Even if that meant doing things he necessarily didn’t agree with.
But they are all I have as well.,
That was the part that had stuck out to Edgar. What were the meaning behind her words? Did she think that Edgar wasn’t as concerned or as invested as she was in this group of witches and wizards? That’s when he knew that Amelia had taken over his life, maybe even holding him back from accomplishing all the things that he was meant to do. It was time to move on from the past and continue forward with the plan, no matter how much it killed him to do so.
“It’s going to be okay, you know. We’re all going to be fine. There must of been a reason why we were chosen to lead and protect them. I’m willing to do anything to make sure that they get out of this, that they have a chance to make a better future.”
