Down by the Shore || Edgar & Mary
Edgar didn’t know what it was about her, but something caught his eye. It was necessarily anything that she had ever said to him or even in general. It was something deeper then words could express. There was something more to Mary and he knew that, but he wasn’t sure what.
It was a couple of weeks again, Edgar noticed something slightly different about Mary. There were times in the day were she would sneak around the port, looking over her shoulder making sure that no one was following her. But who was she worried about? There was hardly anyone that Edgar didn’t trust at the port and he figured everyone else felt the same. Yet there Mary was acting differently from her normal self.
With everything else going on around him, this shouldn’t had even come across Edgar’s radar. But he couldn’t help himself as he sat on the rocks watching the girl as she stood near the shore. He had no idea why he had taken such an interest in her, but he thought that if he could watch her maybe he’d get some insight on what it was that the girl was so worried about hiding, maybe even be able to help her. The more he kept an eye on the girl, the more guilt he had felt for watching over her. It was wrong to invade her privacy like this. Edgar began to gather himself and head back to the cabin when he looked back to the girl and saw her waving at him.
He was caught. Edgar was slightly embarrassed because of it. But, he thought maybe this would be a perfect opportunity to be able to have a real conversation with Mary and maybe figure out what was going on with her. Instead of just returning her wave and returning to his room, Edgar made his way towards he down the shore.
“I see you’ve noticed me. I’m really sorry about that by the way, I’m not quite sure what came over me.”
She liked to be by the ocean. It was a comfort. It was constant, always there. The tides rolled in and out, the waves crashed on the shore, the salt sprayed in the air and misted on her face and hair, the wind swept in from the sea. It was like an old friend. No matter how much time she spent in Port Montrose, she always ended up coming back here, back to the shore.
Mary had been staring out over the waves for a few moments when she’d felt someone's eyes on her. She’d turned to see Edgar, standing back a bit, clearly watching her. She’d smiled and waved, figuring that he wanted to talk and hadn’t been sure if she wanted to be alone. Which she appreciated. Sometimes she did want to be alone. She needed to gather her thoughts and give herself time to just be. She knew that if she didn’t, she’d start withdrawing from people, and she didn’t want that.
“Sorry about what?” She asked, turning towards Edgar.
She tilted her head, wondering why he’d said he was sorry. There was nothing to be sorry for. He was certainly allowed to be out here, as well.
He seemed a little subdued, today. Like he felt ashamed. She wasn’t sure why, though. He was allowed to talk to her if he wanted to, by all means. She wasn’t particularly close with Edgar, but she’d still consider him her friend. She’d consider all the Order members in Port Montrose her friends, even if they didn’t agree. They were like a little family, their own unit out here away from everyone else. Sometimes, when Mary missed her own family, she comforted herself with that thought. Maybe she didn’t have her parents, or her brothers, but she had all her friends around her.
“You don’t have to apologize,” she said, her voice breezy. “Did you want to talk?”
