born to a single mother in toronto, canada, briar never knew his father. he was the product of a frat-party-fueled one night stand months before, and their mother wanted nothing to do with the man (rightfully so, he was terrible) after that. a woman who believed she could take on the world, she thought she could handle a baby, too – even at the ripe age of 20.
what she couldn't have expected was the postpartum depression that would wrack her body when briar was born. she managed to push through, but it wasn't easy. he was colicky, then he was needy, then so hyperactive she couldn't catch up with them. this was around the first time she'd realized she'd bitten off more than she could chew (and around the time briar would tell you she began to resent them, if you asked)
constantly exhausted and barely out of the throes of mental illness, briar's mother knew she couldn't do this alone anymore. finally, she took up her family's offer to help raise briar, and moved them both to cider point to be with her parents; briar was almost two.
it was just in time for school – and god, did it take a village to raise briar. he never did particularly well in school; not for lack of smarts, because he had plenty. but he didn't learn the way other kids did, and no one was willing to stop and figure out why. easier to write them off as "difficult", briar fell behind quickly, and in order to keep him from falling through the cracks, constant tutoring sessions began to replace the sports he'd liked to do. all for what he deemed useless because he just didn't get it.
briar became kind of a "lost cause" to schools quickly, but never to his mother. she moved him from school to school whenever he'd get in trouble. her love was pure, but briar was never let off easy, most blamed pinned on him for being too distracted, too unwilling to learn.
falls into the wrong crowd fast. feeling outcast by the authority figures at his school, he finds his own community. late nights skating, tagging, and doing some type of drug are frequent. so are the pained looks from their mother when they come home as the sun rises once again.
it culminates in a fight at age 16 that practically shakes their little trailer they call home. briar were going nowhere fast, she worked so hard for him and he's throwing it away. he leaves in a huff, taking only what he absolutely needed; his grandparents, his aunts & uncles all tried to get him to stay, but he couldn't do it.
briar couch surfs with his friends for a while before his older cousin & her fiancee take him in to their townhome in penny lane. he had no clue what he was going to do, but the couple struck a deal; he stays in school and actually tries to do the work, and he can stay with them. so, he finished up high school (albeit a year or so late).
that's why you'll see him at bay state gas most nights working the graveyard shift, doing fuck all on his phone or playing paper football with ... himself. he's part time in school studying what the fuck ever, but his heart's not in it -- all these years and he still doesn't know what the hell to do. he used to be a weed dealer, but there's dispensaries now, and it stopped being worth the headache when he ran out of kids to sell oregano to. still acquires the good shit, but now it's for himself <3

absolutely whacked with a case of severe adhd (based off of my experience as someone w it) that does impact every area of their life. he got diagnosed like four years ago, and he promises he's taking his adderall. sometimes. probably. briar's impulsive (and often self-destructive in an effort to complete some self fulfilling prophecy) actions are often attributed to this. "did you take your meds?" sets him off (often to an irrational degree). he's still got a complex about how he feels his brain fucked up his whole life and nobody did anything until now. best not to mention it at all.
a ridiculous flirt, kind of easy honestly. extremely susceptible to flattery and prone to dishing it out. owns several pieces of merchandise with "i <3 milfs" on it. really annoying and it's worse that a lot of the time it works.
loves spray-painting & tagging, total adrenaline junkie; tags obscenely rich houses and corporation buildings typically. an occasional freeway overpass if he's feeling it. very much subscribes to the "eat the rich" mentality.
always doing something with their limbs; tapping their fingers, bouncing their leg, fiddling with their hair. like the energizer bunny on ... well, adderall.

for most of her life she wasn't even aware of it. she later came to have younger siblings of her own (her younger brother aleksei is very close to her heart and practically her best friend, will be mentioned often)
growing up, esme was always considered weird, something of an "old soul" (read: autistic), though her family never made her feel as such. to them, she was everything they could have wanted ─ to the kids at school, however, her blunt (but, admittedly true) remarks and a lack of social awareness made her an easy target. she was usually less than interested in giving into the bait, much preferring to play in a patch of mud (it's a tidepool!) instead.
middle school was worse. the bullying ramped up and she curled in on herself, winging up tight & building strong chitin in the form of poisonous words and avoidance ( no this will not be processed dni ). she leaned into books, music, film, & poetry to help her escape, cherishing the time she had with her family above all else.
as a result of esme's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad sixth grade year, the family moved to ciderpoint; sarah, a teacher, had gotten a good position at a good school, and a change of environment was clearly in order. by then, though, the damage was done, and esme turns into that one meme of goob in meet the robinsons. she fears this was always the natural order of things; after all, she is the best company she could hope to have.
went to college for geology & earth science back in new york, missing the city she had grown up in, bustling and all. her dad's connections allowed her to bulk up her portfolio and work through most of her college years while traveling for research, getting her foot into the metaphorical paleontology door, old men be damned. she came back after undergrad, and is currently home taking a (second, oops) gap year & bartending to bank money in preparation for the phd program she's going to enter. hello, scotland !
chose paleontology in part because her most prevalent (and enduring) special interest is dinosaurs, and yes it is ridiculously serious (obviously. she's trying to have dinosaur as a job). she feels more connected to the dead than she does the alive, if the dead is something that lived hundreds of millions of years ago and still exists to this day. as apathetic as she might be about ... well, mostly everything, ask her to talk about her studies and you've got her talking until you tell her to stop; she might even shed a little tear if you're lucky.

as briefly mentioned above, deeply autistic ( drawing mostly from my own experience as someone who has it, so it won't be 1:1 with everyone ). very particular about her environment, who is in it, what is most optimal for her -- she learned very young that prevention of triggers kept her happy, healthy, and calm, and so her peace is what she protects the most. also -- though she's very aware when something she's saying is mean, it truly is a grey area for her when it's also something that's honest ( whether that be true to her opinion or simply an actual fact ), and she struggles with wanting the truth to be known while also being kind and shutting up. shutting up has seldom ever felt like an option. esme's general unpleasantness has no reflection on what the mun would ever say in real life or towards your characters -- i love them all! i'm so happy to interact with them even if she usually seems like she isn't!!!! also, chronic fucking grumpy gills.
esme used a communication device when she was younger, as she struggled with selective mutism up until about first grade. it should be noted that she could absolutely talk, but refused to. once she did begin to talk, she started to become the four seasons fully conscious baby. just kind of so scary.
has glasses she definitely needs to wear, hates them & still will not wear them. her running into the edges of shelving sometimes is her own goddamn business.
