it took a moment for viggo to understand exactly what was happening. the situation was more than a bit peculiar. he looked at the cake and then at the prince and slow nodded. “ ah, yeah, of course. ” he gingerly pulled the plate closer to himself. “ congratulations. what’s the number ? is it a time for a crisis or a celebration ? ”  

“Twenty-five... Maybe a little of both? My parents are nagging me to look for a bride by this age,” he said, trying not to sound too much like he was complaining but -- he was complaining. He wasn’t ready yet.

He couldn’t help but stop to watch, his attention drawn to the rarely sighted vehicle. It was his love for cars that made him stop. He was used to seeing very modern makes but sometimes the vintage ones were more interesting, probably due to how much rarer they were. He almost failed to notice the duke himself until he was spoken to, having been more invested in the vehicle than the man helping with it. He almost spoke in Kazakh by mistake but stopped himself, struggled with the English words getting knotted up in his head despite having been studying so hard. It took him a moment before he was able to answer in the mutual language. “You know a lot, about automobiles?” he mused. To be able to work with such a vintage model, one probably had to. It was impressive.

“No, thank you though, fasting hours.” Juliana tapped the face of her watch. She had a lot to learn, names and faces of everyone involved in the program included. “Happy birthday anyway, is it today or…?”

“Thank you--it passed, I was back in my home country for it.” He decided to just leave the cake there for anyone to have a go at it as they pleased. “I guess somebody else will have to eat it.”

“I….” He cocked a brow as the other set down the cake. “Do you normally offer things to strangers? Or just cake? Not that I’m complaining.”

“If I have something to offer, why not?” he said with a small shrug. “Better than enjoying things by myself.” Besides, there was no way he could eat the whole cake on his own. “But you are not total stranger. I am friends with you brother, Vincent.”

Erzhan carried a plate of cake into the common room and set it down on the table where someone was already sitting. “Somebody sent me birthday cake. Please have some, it is a lot.” He’d just gotten back from a week spent in Kazakhstan with family, followed by a sort of parade for his 25th birthday, and now that he was back, this was delivered to his apartment.

ooc; so it’s this guy’s 25th birthday and i think i’m sort of HCing that he went home for the week to celebrate with family and have a little parade in the capital city? So he’ll come back from that. :| but if anyone wants to do something for when he gets back...

“Oh, that’s okay. It is nothing urgent. I just came over to say hello properly,” Erzhan said in slightly accented but otherwise fluent Russian, his face relaxed and looking approachable. “I don’t believe we’ve ever met... I’m Erzhan. Is it safe to guess that you are his sister?” he asked, holding his hand out for a habitually polite greeting gesture.

He was just about to ring the bell when he suddenly got turned around. He didn’t automatically register what was happening until he saw Vince’s sister. “Natalia! Hi,” he greeted, realizing that it’s been quite a while since he’d seen her face. “If it is okay, I would love some tea with you.” He wasn’t sure if she meant the beverage or the traditional British tea, but either one sounded good right now.

“ audi is easier to remember, ” kalla shrugged and softly shook her head. she took quick steps to keep up with him. “ sounds good, i don’t think i’ve had ice cream in… seven months ? maybe ? camel milk ice cream never. ”

“It is good, I think. I only tried it one time in Kazakhstan so it might be different here. It has a little of salty flavour--it is more healthy than regular ice cream.” He easily found his car once they were in the garage and went up to it, proudly presenting it to Kalla. “Kalla, meet my car.” He gestured to the round logo in the back with the three-pronged star, then walked to the driver’s side door and opened it up, the automatic sensor detecting the key and unlocking. He glanced over to the German princess then. “Do you trust me?” To drive. He didn’t want to put an unwilling passenger into his car if they preferred to be driven by their own hired chauffeur.

“As charming as that is, I’m pretty sure I’d be the one carrying you into the sunset,” Vincent corrected, following Erzhan’s lead inside. Sometimes he wished he was better at playing the proper prince, but it was always so much easier to be goofy–especially around royals like Erzhan, who never made him feel like he should be stuck on formalities. “Last time I was there, I seem to remember a lot of promises made about reserving that guest room for me… just saying,” He teased, holding his hands up like he was wondering where his invite was. “English family dinners are absolute disaster zones, there’s a reason that when I invite you it’s usually just me and Nat,” He pointed out, although it wasn’t as though Erzhan hadn’t had the chance to meet all of the siblings. “Listen, I’m still working off the weight I gained from my trip there last fall you don’t have to tell me twice. Tell me, how do you maintain your figure? Besides running around breaking hearts?”

“You?” Erzhan asked with a raised eyebrow, giving Vincent a look that said he clearly did not believe that Vince was capable of carrying him anywhere. “Can you even carry me to the other side of this room? I wonder...” he teased, not actually willing to let him try.

“Hey, the guest room is always yours,” he defended, mimicking Vincent’s gesture of putting his own hands up. “I am sure Anara would be happy. And my grandmother even want to make you your own shapan to wear,” he said with a small laugh at the mental image of Vince wearing traditional Kazakh clothing. Those photos would definitely be going on Instagram right away. “How is she, your sister? She is around here?”

Erzhan was about to answer the question regarding his figure when the follow-up question threw him off guard and made him balk a little before knocking his shoulder against Vince’s again. “I don’t break hearts,” he said, though there wasn’t too much conviction in his words as he failed to come up with a quick comeback to that. “You probably one who breaks hearts.”

Layla nodded slowly, unfazed by the assumption. “Politics,” she clarified, “but we are making things work.” Maintaining a soft smile, she continued. “That is kind of you to say. You are also welcome over anytime, I think he will be glad to have someone around who can understand Turkish.

Her smile grew into a quiet laugh. “Still a lovely song either way.” She’d have to add Kazakh to her language list. “Oh, I can play piano too, though I have not practiced in a while.” Layla had to really think of any other talents, she didn’t do much aside from studying and reading. “I learned how to belly dance when I was younger, but I do not and will not perform. My mother wanted to make sure I was… well-rounded regarding our history and culture.”

Politics--a common reason for matrimonial bonds for their kinds of people. Erzhan considered himself lucky for dodging that kind of thing so far, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t marry for politics in the future. He just hoped that he would also be in love with that person, when it came down to it--ever the romantic. “Is he kind? To you.” Are you in love? Perhaps the question was a little out of line, but he couldn’t help but hope that the answer to the unspoken question was yes. So that he could be happy for her genuinely. But he knew how this kind of thing usually worked... He quickly added on, “I am sorry--I should not ask such question. You do not need answer.”

He immediately perked up at the mention of piano, even if she was out of practice. He considered that he himself was very out of practice anyway. But that wasn’t the part that got his attention. His eyes widened a little in surprise, his jaw dropped just the slightest bit. “Belly dance, really? Like...” He made a body movement in a very poor imitation of the dance and quickly stopped and laughed. His limbs were far too long and his dancing skills too abysmal for this. “I cannot do it, no,” he said with embarrassment. "I cannot dance. But we have it in my country too. Cultura is a little bit similar.”

Michael smiled, clearly, this boy was sweet. Too sweet to be one of them, which was unfortunate because as Michael had learned, their world did not allow a kind heart to last long. “Perhaps you’ll host a performance for us sometime,” Michael said as he stood and straightened his clothes. “Would you mind if I came by with a load later today? I’ll call the repair company again and then put another load in my washer.” 

“I would love it. To perform in Dubai. I am working on a music project--I just finished studying at conservatory last year.” He stopped there a moment, wondering if it should really be the first thing he shared about himself. It ran the risk of letting people assume that he wasn’t very political, which was not the case, but at least being underestimated was better than disappointing people with too high expectations. He decided not to worry about it too much. It was late and they weren’t by any means in a formal setting right now--the Irish prince had been asleep out in the open. Erzhan motioned him over as he made his way over towards the elevators. “Of course. Nineteen floor, turn left from elevators, and it is the third apartment on the right side.” He clicked the call button for the elevator. “Do you eat meat? I can make food for us if you are hungry.” Translation: he would do it even if Michael wasn’t hungry, because otherwise he would not be able to get his mother’s judging expression out of his head for not feeding his guest. “I did not eat yet so I will make anyway.”

comfortably, he leans back into his seat. the mission was never to win an argument, or even the discussion. the king had already chosen his loyalties. for now, his aim was only to learn, but not from the best version of himself that erzhan presented. his shoulders shrug casually. this exact politically correct version of the question could easily be discovered through a quick google search of the young prince’s name. “ so far, you’ve stayed out of conflict. perhaps there wont be war on your land but there will always be collateral damage. ” it was inevitable, in such a politically volatile environment. “ a country is only as strong as its allies and those they trade with. eventually neutrality won’t be good for your country, but i respect your vision. ”

Erzhan remained seated straight in contrast to the other’s more relaxed stance and listened intently, not shying away from maintaining eye contact. He nodded a little in acknowledgement, showed interest in what was being said to him. He had always been trained to listen to take into consideration all sides of things. He spoke back with sincerity, not rushing to get the words out. "How do you suggest that we can control the collateral damage and keep it to a minimum? As allies. It is of course a concern, especially when making an alliance with a country that has enemies--those enemies will come to see us as an enemy too and that welcomes risk of collateral damage itself. I need to be sure there is a protection plan in such a scenario.” He leaned forward, his arms resting on his knees as he finally relaxed his posture a little. “I speak of neutrality, but my country’s--my father’s--loyalty lies with you now, and I hope it continues to for a long time. If something happens on your land, you know that you have our full support, no hesitation. We protect our brothers and sisters, we share with you our rich agriculture and meats--our relationship with you is very important to us and I hope the feeling is mutual.” Naturally, many Russians lived on Kazakh land, so the alliance seemed inevitable. Erzhan had to keep the reminder that it wasn’t the Romanov family that put Kazakhstan through the deadly Soviet period constantly at the foreground of his mind, an assurance that a repeat of that would not occur this time around. And yet... there was always that what-if at the back of his mind that was highly influenced by his grandfather’s former rule under which he’d been born. His father fully and openly trusted the Russian king, and Erzhan could only try his best to keep his eyes and ears open.

honesty hour

ooc; I live in a house in one of the biggest cities. Rent is stupid expensive here so I have been living here for far too long just because the rent is a little lower (but still too much and increasing all the time). It’s a three bedroom. I think it was originally two bedrooms and a super large family room but the family room was split in two at some point before I moved here. My room is at the very back and has a door leading out back to the yard, where we often have cat visitors. I love cats so I always try to attract them with snacks and such. I had two cats that were practically my own but still street cats but the first one is long gone :( and the other one disappeared last year... I still hold out hope that she’ll come back one day but... Yeah, I was really close to these cats. But that wasn’t the question. Anyway, out back is a yard with lots of grass and there’s lavender and a lilac tree that blooms every year. I live next to a busy street but far enough that it’s relatively quiet here (though I would still be able to hear cars and such at night if my window’s open). There are times when neighbours are noisy but for the most part it’s pretty chill and quiet. It’s a pretty diverse street and we have people of many different backgrounds and religions, so that’s always cool. I live four blocks from a subway station which takes me wherever I need to go... There are also some buses. Bunch of stores/restaurants... It’s easy to get caught up eating out or ordering in and getting too lazy to cook.
