This work explores compassion within the hospital system, focusing on the often-overlooked humanity of patients who are reduced to numbers and diagnoses. As someone navigating this space, I am struck by how easily identity is stripped away in clinical settings. Through my work, I aim to honor these individuals—preserving their dignity and stories while respecting HIPAA confidentiality. By abstracting and anonymizing their experiences, I invite viewers to reflect on their own vulnerability and the inevitability of one day becoming the patient. This project seeks to restore empathy to the medical narrative and create space for connection, memory, and care.

In this piece, I use humor as a tool to disarm and provoke, creating a playful yet pointed sculpture that mimics “morning wood.” By merging rebar—rigid, industrial, overtly masculine—with delicate lace, traditionally associated with femininity and softness, I confront the absurdity and tension within gendered structures. The juxtaposition of materials exaggerates the form, turning male genitals into a site of comedy and critique. Humor becomes a way to explore vulnerability, performance, and cultural codes of masculinity, while the materials themselves clash and converse, highlighting the contradictions that live within identity, intimacy, and the social body.

QCQ #4: X Marks the Spot

Quote:

“Nauman’s attack, far more deadly than anti-form—because it is about a cooling from which nothing will be able to extricate itself in the guise of whatever articulation—is an attack made in the very name of death, or to use another term, entropy.”

Commentary:

This line frames Nauman’s work as not just a physical gesture, but a philosophical one. Unlike Anti-Form artists who embraced disorder and process, Nauman’s gesture is about the cessation of motion and meaning—turning space itself into a tomb. His casts are not remnants of an object but of absence—spaces that once existed. This makes them not only difficult to read,and challenging our desire to interpret.

Question:

How might this notion of casting as an entropic sealing-off of space relate to the way cultural memory or trauma is preserved and passed down—rigid, formless, and resistant to articulation?

Quote:

"There is an intimate creative connection between thought and laughter... According to this logic laughter possesses the ability to enact a radical shift that sets in motion critical deliberations." (p. 75)

Commentary:

Heather Diack highlights the underestimated philosophical depth of laughter, suggesting it is not merely an emotional release but a trigger for intellectual engagement. This insight reframes humour as a potent conceptual tool rather than a distraction from serious art. In the context of conceptual art, laughter is not pointless —it’s a method for destabilizing norms, prompting reflection, and revealing new perspectives. A perfect example is the elephant in the room that is presented at the Rubell.

Question:

How might the recognition of humour as a mode of philosophical inquiry change the way we evaluate or teach conceptual art today?

Cleansing of the feet , 2025

Water, soap, holy water

In this performance, I explore my relationship with religion through the symbolic act of cleansing the feet—a gesture rooted in humility, ritual, and care. I use a handmade replica of the container that once held the water from my first baptism, reimagined in soap. This object becomes both vessel and cleansing agent, allowing me to revisit the concept of spiritual purification on my own terms. By repeating the act, I reclaim the ritual, cleansing my body not once, but as many times as I choose. It becomes a meditation on agency, faith, and the evolving nature of personal belief.

In this piece, I am trying to create a series of pieces exploring my relationship with the spiritual, specifically Catholicism. My relationship with religion is very complicated because it is so tight with my grandmother and the memories and rituals that we have formed together. Still, I cannot carry on those traditions when she is gone. Whenever I hear the masses, there is such a strong disconnect between the way my grandmother taught me and the words that are being spoken and claimed to be God. Therefore, this has created a cycle of guilt where I am constantly going back and forth with my relationship with God and only talking to him during times of emergencies. I want to explore this relationship to understand the inconsistency better, which is why I feel so unworthy. It is doubtful for me to be in and out when forming a bond. I am consistent, so I have to question the more profound meaning when that is not being represented here. With escape, they are used for protection and as a reminder to follow the principles and morals of the saint being represented. In this piece, I decided to replace the saints on one side of the piece and instead insert my grandmother as she is a role model for the woman I want to become.

Response:

This observation highlights an intriguing gap in art criticism. While the frame has been extensively deconstructed in relation to painting, the pedestal—equally crucial in defining an artwork’s presence—has remained largely unquestioned. This suggests that our engagement with sculpture has been conditioned to accept the pedestal as a neutral element, rather than as an active participant in meaning-making.

Question:

If the pedestal is not merely a support but part of the artwork’s meaning, how might contemporary artists further subvert or integrate it into their sculptural practice? For the existing sculptures that live on top of a pedestal, should we as the viewer start reading it differently with this knowledge in mind.

Comment:

This statement highlights the shift in the role of artists from creators of static objects to facilitators of experiences, discussions, and interventions. In contemporary site-specific art, artists often act as cultural mediators, researchers, and even project managers, navigating institutional, social, and political spaces. This transformation raises questions about authorship, artistic autonomy, and the increasing overlap between artistic and institutional functions. While this evolution allows art to engage more directly with pressing social issues, it also risks artists being co-opted into bureaucratic and commercial frameworks.

Question:

How does the shift from object-making to service-providing in site-specific art challenge traditional notions of artistic authorship and value?
