This is a more of an animated vision of who Lady Nyx is. I see her as having the same vibes as Morticia Addams. Very regal and elegant and sophisticated but completely unhinged. and her kid inherited this.
She'll invite them over for tea and the blend would have dried blood in it. The most prized stag blood for her children and something a little more...outsourced for herself.
When they meet for dinners, it's always an affair. Especially if guests are invited. They dress to the T's. A dark academic, vampiric dream of flowy blouses, pressed slacks, leather boots, expensive looking cloaks, glittering jewelry. Looking like a pintrest board. Once dinner is over and the guests have left they go outside to the back garden and the children dance in the moonlight to The Cure and The Cramps and Judas Priest and give offerings to Cousin Artemis for providing the mood lighting for the evening while their mother watches with a fond smile, tapping her long sharp nails on the arm of her chair to the beat.
Lady Nyx refers to her individual children as "my daughter" "my son" "my child" and when they are all together, "my dears" "my loves" "my little bats".
Her children will refer to her as "Lady Nyx" or "Lady Night" as an initial greeting around company but then will refer to her as "Lady Mother" or "Mother Night" for the rest of the meeting. When alone, they will just call her Mother.
Her palace in the underworld feels as though it is never ending. With high elaborate archways, spiraling marble/obsidian staircases, large balconies and terraces, big glass windows, hidden rooms, a giant library. A throne room, two dining rooms (one for personal use and one for guests), a family room, a garden big enough to have a hedge maze. the list goes on.
The garden is full of plants and vegetation that requires little to no natural light and they tend to be monstrous. They might have teeth or make growling noises. There are a few that purr if you pet their petals or roots. There is one tree in the middle of the maze that thrives off of sacrificial offerings and because of this, it has blood red leaves and a slight metallic smell. It also grows the most delicious fruit you will ever taste, but unless you are of the underworld, maybe don't eat them.
All of the children receive a crown when they are born that will shift and change based on the wearers taste. They are only made with the purest of metals and finest cut gems and jewels from Lord Hades himself.
Since her children are of the underworld, they tend to have an affinity for witchcraft because of their closeness to Lady Hecate. Because of this, they will usually hold ritual during the solstices, beltane, full moons, etc in honor of their Mother. To thank the universe and the realm for bringing the gods to this plane and for allowing their Mother to have and keep the powers she has. And for allowing those powers to pass on to their children.
They have wings that can be retracted into the back unnoticeable because magic. Usually either leather, batlike wings or feathery, birdlike wings.
While at CHB, her children are regularly found wondering the woods at night uninterrupted because the harpies do not want to deal with the vibes they give off. When they are found, they smile serenely and say they were talking to Mother or just taking a stroll. But their eyes are a little wider and reflective than normal and their smile just a bit sharper. literally, they have fangs.
They casually walk around camp with fancy black umbrellas to protect them from the sun and are known to stay near the shadows or to bring the shadows to them. with clunky dollar store sunglasses and baggy dark sweatshirts on top of their platform boots with real silver studs they are usually something to look at.

i'm too...skeptical of a person to vibe with much of the "witchcraft" adjacent spirituality that's popular nowadays
However, one of the most difficult things to understand about The Past is that for many of your ancestors, the distinction between "spiritual" and "mundane" phenomena did not exist.
and this does create problems for the idea that "science is for one set of questions, religion is for another" or at least the idea that "witchcraft" is a religion (exclusively). In The Past, philosophers speculated about the universe from the point of view that there were spiritual realities and that they weren't distinct from material realities. Before the modern idea of gravity, there was the idea that the four classical elements each had a particular nature, with earth being the heaviest and fire being the lightest. This also corresponded to a moral reality about the elementsâthe lighter elements were more "pure." (This is why in Dante's Inferno at the center of the Earth is Satan himself.) These people weren't assigning morals to substances in the way we now think of it. Their spiritual and moral realities were just "real" in the same way as the physical world.
People asked "From what we know of God, what can we hypothesize about the existence of extraterrestrial planets and beings, and what they are like?" And it's interesting to note that the belief in God didn't obstruct them from asking these questions; instead, it allowed them to ask these questions at a time when they didn't have naturalistic observations to go on.
But I'm getting off trackâmodern science is derived from things like alchemy and philosophy, and we are a bit biased here because we tend to see Aristotle and the like as precursors to "science," whereas when indigenous people maintain and pass down a collective body of naturalistic observations about their world, that's seen as some kind of cutesy pagan thing. Which is just racism.
In reality, ancient astronomers were also priests, medicine was practiced by shamans. They were people with knowledge that the average person did not possess. If there's a generic word for this type of person, it's "wise woman" or "wise man": the "three wise men" that are said to have visited Jesus were astronomers. The figures we see as "spiritual" often dealt primarily, and sometimes almost exclusively, with physical, natural phenomena. When they did deal with spiritual phenomena, it was for a lot of the same reasons that we do.
(Arguably, we have a worse understanding of some things, because we see everything in the physical world, including our own bodies, as unaffected by the meaning we assign them.)
What this means is that "witchcraft" can and should be to some extent "mundane" and evidence-based. But in my mind, "witchcraft" means possessing some kind of knowledge that is hands-on, practical, and not easily obtainable just by reading books or wikipedia, tempered by wisdom as a guide for when and how to apply it. It's also a social role; it suggests your knowledge makes you important to your community.

âHow do spells work if there are so many different spells to cause the same effect?â one might ask.Â
The answer that witches give is often, âWell, the intention is what really matters,â in which cause you might wonder what the point of ingredients is at all.Â
Can you really replace every herb with rosemary and have the exact same result as if you used what was called for?Â
People may have different answers to this, but hereâs what I think.Â
The rules of magic donât really follow logical structures that we are used to. Magic in particular tends to be difficult to quantify, difficult to study in a laboratory setting, and the effects are difficult to reproduce. That doesnât make it definitively not real but it means that we have to look at it through a different lens than we are used to.Â
I am a programmer, and I make analogies to programming a lot. When I was first learning to program, I had an incredibly difficult time with the learning curve. Of course I know now how consistent the logic of programming languages is - but despite the consistency, it is an entirely different way of thinking than the way we think about problem solving in human languages. Both ways of thinking about data have their own structures, but learning to think a different way can be incredibly difficult. People may also encounter this difficulty when learning a human language with a wildly different grammar.Â
We donât really know a lot of things about magic or why it works, and that is why there isnât a really good, logically consistent answer to these kinds of questions. Maybe intention matters, but maybe the proximity of intention to certain ingredients matters. Maybe the timing matters. Or maybe these are all just dressings to active some force - of the universe or of our own minds - that we donât know we donât know about yet. Maybe some things are just coincidences, and we canât separate out which things are coincidences and which things are meaningfully caused. Some things are demonstrably placebos - but to most people it will not matter anyway, so long as they get the effect they want.Â
Witches end up feeling things out. And part of the reason everything is so individualized and non-straightforward is because different things seem to work for different people. But we donât necessarily know why that is. So witchcraft becomes a craft of sifting through information, trying things, discovering things, and alighting on different things that seem to work for the individual practitioner. And as their magic becomes more advanced, it becomes more difficult to articulate hows, whats, and whys.Â
A lot of my magic is based on wishing superstitions. I have no idea why, but the trappings of those things work for me. If I ask for something while blowing all of the seeds off a dandelion, it will happen. I canât just make that seem wish at nothing and have it come true. Does it activate some power in me? Is it based on my own belief? Is it because I was born in February? The reason why this works for me and not for other people could be any number of reasons, but I donât have a good way of studying those reasons. Meanwhile putting herbs and stones in a jar really seems to work for some people, but doesnât seem to do much for me at all.Â
So the answer to the questions I asked at the beginning is basically: no one really knows. People have guesses that are hard to prove or disprove. But plenty of science-minded or skeptical people like myself still engage in the practice of magic because there are discernible patterns to some things - and witchcraft is a search to discover oneâs own patterns.
