Some Aubrey stuff
Was thinking instead that ranks of magic mainly just changes how long it takes to make a spell; with preparation and enough time even a low rank Mage can use a powerful spell, however it'll take dozens or even hundreds of times more time than a high rank Mage
Aubrey is still the lowest rank despite her ability to grasp complex spells and prepare being on the level of more seasoned Mages because no matter what, she can't seem to do even basic spells in a timely manner
she eventually fights with a delay-stack style, using basic magic and even just avoiding it to charge up better spells to then stack them and unleash them onto an opponent, overwhelming them (the main drawback being that she has to avoid getting hurt a lot for some time in the process)
Rabbits are good evaders too so
Thinking that the main reason for her lack of speed with spells is from her general struggle to focus for a long period of time
She ended up resigning to being a Rank Dawn Mage (second lowest rank ahead of Rank Noon Mage) and trying to avoid magic as much as possible out of embarrassment (especially since her entire family're Mages as well besides her sister who's a Mage Historian)
I was floating the idea of Mages also having an assistant creature like a monster or ghost who incidentally created a bond with said Mage but idk if that's pushing it too much
Aubrey's would be a Frankensteined opossum, the bond being when she first found it dead on the side of the road and gave it a burial
50/50 chance that the Junior Mage you get is from a good or bad experience
Eventually for families of Mages, Junior Mages become unoriginal family members and are prepared to become a proper assistant for their Mage (with varying levels of success)
A really powerful one is one that can summon the power of a comet
For the highest ranked Mage, it would take maybe half a minute to cast
For the lowest ranked Mage, it could take up to a decade
Remember that for spells you have to be at least somewhat focused on it the entire time
Junior Mages are where the Mages and Guards come into conflict, because in many cases they're recruited from the ghosts directly from areas under Guard jurisdiction; it's especially a problem because Guard systems of leadership are much more secretive than Mage ones
