THIS TOOK TOO LONGGGGG. finished my team logo for the pokemon draft league im doing with friends! won my first match im excited for the coming weeks!
Another binder painting, this time of Mega Dragalge! This is the SIR card from Chaos Rising and it felt appropriate to paint it on the binder that will hold Perfect Order, Chaos Rising and Pitch Black sets!
pokemon review request: mega dragalge?
Dragalge has a decent design, but the colors always felt a little off—the purple and brown are pretty low-contrast and desaturated, and both red and green are competing to be the accent colors.
With Mega Dragalge, they fix this issue immediately by taking regular Dragalge's crest and expanding it to be much longer and more kelp-like. Dragalge is based off a leafy seadragon, so it makes sense for the mega to lean into both the camouflage and the intricate nature of seadragons more.

This crest is now red and purple, as is the body, making those the primary colors with brown being an accent and green now being the tertiary. This, combined with making the brown darker, helps balance the colors much better, and making the (intentionally) drab Dragalge more colorful makes sense for the mega as well.
Beyond the head crest, there are also a bunch of changes made to the body. The pectoral fins are now much longer and have a more flowing, intricate shape. The brown bottom of the neck now expands into a nice collar, the snout is longer and more crooked, and it has two tendrils coming off its head instead of only one. The shapes overall are also a bit more refined and less crooked. Good stuff overall.
The only thing I don't care for is the green bits on the head. The green looks slightly out-of-place (though I get wanting to keep it because regular Dragalge has it), especially combined with the knobs in the middle being the only round part of the design. But even putting that aside, I'm...not really sure what those knobs are? Are they eyespots? Just algae swim bladder-type structures? It feels like they're drawing a lot of attention to themselves, but there's no meaning or anything to them when it feels like there should be, if that makes sense.
Anyway, overall, I think Mega Dragalge is really strong and is a good solid improvement over regular Dragalge. I just wish something else was done with the green parts, as that's the one thing that drag(alge)s the design down.
