Darren Greenfield served the British Army for 12 proud years,
including during the Bosnian conflict. But after leaving the military,
life became a battle of a different kind. Struggling to find work and
stability, Darren ended up homeless on the streets of Edinburgh,
often sitting outside Waverley Station.
Despite reaching out for help and spending time in veteran housing,
he slipped through the cracks of a system meant to protect him.
Shortly before Christmas, at just 47 years old, Darren passed away
in hospital. Locals marked his spot with a small sign "Gone to the
angels."
His story is a painful reminder that many veterans still fight silent wars
long after they return home. Supporting veteran charities, advocating
for better care, and simply showing kindness can make a difference
for those still struggling
