Itâs been very pretty ever since Hong Kongâs first black rainstorm signal since 2010. But more on todayâŠ
Suddenly received a phone call from the Faculty of Finance and Economics in the morning, requesting a meeting about the Urban Economics exam Iâd written last week. There were really only two reasons why the faculty would take time to make personal phone calls: 1) exam failures or 2) administration problems (e.g. cheating suspicions). Hanging up, I began to deduce that realistically, option one would be the likely option, as most administration problems could be solved through the more efficient means of email. Glancing at my watch, it was only 11 am; the meeting was schedule for 3Â pm, meaning four whole hours of negative suspense. Needless to say, I wasnât able to finish a large part of my planned studies for Tuesday. I started panicking mad (imagine Gollum and the Ring), and silly and sentimental thoughts began pouring in my head:
This is your turning point in life Esther. Accept defeat, learn, then move on.
Maybe God is telling you not to study Economics.
You are strong Esther Law. You canât cry in that room once they tell you youâve failed.
Sauderâs mentioned that no oneâs really failed on their exchange because academically, UBC is already quite tough; if you can handle UBC, you can handle exchange. Oh my goodness, Iâm gonna be the first Sauder student to fail on exchange.
Letâs think very very very positively Esther Law. You will not fail. Maybe youâve been called in because youâve made a genius economic discovery that your prof and Li Ka Shing wants to use. Youâre gonna be rich and famous.
So after four hours of panic and imagining the most crazy scenarios in my head, I trudged my way up HKUâs 1802732103710273 stairsteps to meet up with the faculty.
As I was led into the meeting room (sweaty and out of breath), I noticed that the lady had, along with her notebook, a leaflet of HKUâs Business Consulting Practicum. Quite honestly, my first thought: My goodness, theyâre inviting me into their program! Iâm a consulting genius! That thought was immediately rejected as soon as the lady asked me to copy the first two sentences on the leaflet. Next thought: They must be thinking Iâd cheated on the exam. NoâŠwaitâŠmaybe they want to make sure the exam belongs to me before letting me know that Iâve failed.
After passing back my writing sample to the lady, I looked up and saw a smirk on her face as she glanced back and forth between my exam paper and writing sample. How rude! Sheâs laughing at my failure!
âCan I see your home school student ID?â Shoot. Theyâre gonna contact UBC too.
The lady began laughing out loud (rude), and turned my exam paper to me. On it, written very clearly in black ink, were eight numeric digits Iâve imprinted in my mind over the last three years. Four whole hours of suspense (I literally had goosebumps in the final hour) to discover that Iâd written my UBC student number as opposed to my HKU student number on the paper. Trolled. Itâs not April 1st, but I've been trolled by HKU. All in all though, Iâm glad the phone call came to nothing big and am extremely relieved. TG(IF).
The world just got a whole lot brighter.
Study food for tonight. Four years of Japanese, and I still have trouble comprehending what flavor this is.
