You and Fraser knew each other for forever at this point. He’s your neighbor in the same building since you both six, he was all over your childhood and adolescent memories, when you had an argument with your parents and locked yourself in the room, he was the one you would be texting for emotional support; You loved how he used to drag you downstairs for street hockey, how he’d praise the way you battled for the ball. It gave you a huge confidence boost about playing sports at school; Had a great time at his street hockey birthday party; when it’s your birthday, he especially practiced a piano piece to play for you; he ringed you for outfit ideas about the draft day, and made you promise you would be there with some matching colors, and when he got drafted by leafs, you cheered for him in the crowd with the loudest voice you can make, he waved at you with the biggest smile….all those years of joy and companionship, you already used to have him by your side, and same for him, used to have your back and categorized it to ‘being each other’s best friend’ kind of thing, but not realizing this level of codependency can’t be explained by being friend. But when you were both in it, it’s hard to see the whole picture. Two of you were all taking this intimacy for granted, without realizing the emotion behind it.
However when he left Vancouver to kick off his hockey career, that’s the first time you felt so out of place. Nothing seemed right, you guys were not a door knock away anymore, all the old routines were not applicable, you still wanted to text him everyday about what yall going to do later, not realizing he’s on the road. There were times you actually sent those text out, and he chirped you about it. You started go to places used to be yours spots all by yourself, sending him a pic of the coffee or food you were having and trying to make the text sounds causal. “I randomly went back here” and pretended judging about their new menu, but what you really want to say was, I miss you, I wish you were here, I want to spend time with you. But would you talk to a friend like that?
That was the moment reality hit you hard, realizing you never just want him as a friend. He needs to be your boyfriend, your husband, your soulmate, your gay besties, every vital role in your life can be him, but can’t just be friends. At this point you hadn’t built up the courage to tell him, you didn’t know how he would react. Would he feel the same way as I did? You thought to yourself, while went through the text chain with him. Fraser also texted you way more frequently since he went to Toronto, always checking how you day went, how’s class going today, have you eaten, who you were with….. he texted every friend like this? Texted them everyday to check on everything? In this cute yet slightly possessive tone? A new text came right in to stop your intrusive thoughts, it’s from Fraser, he said next week was the summer break, he will be back on Friday and he wanted to see you. You heart fluttered with this news, like you already surrounded by his clean linen and soft woods scent, his warm embrace and smile. God, being nonchalant about him seemed impossible from now on. You hearted the message, didn’t ask for more, like what we gonna do on Friday, Didn’t you tell other friends about it. Somehow you have a feeling this meetup would only about you two.
Fraser said he would just meet you outside your place then go get dinner. When he texted I’m here, you felt so nervous for the first time about meeting him, you havent seen him in months, it feel like eternity. you are so anxious about things might change between you two, but in the end, the urge of wanting to see and touch him took the lead, you rushed downstairs to open the door, Fraser had been leaning against the doorframe, but the moment he saw you, he straightened up, his eyes lighting up with unmistakable joy. Seeing that light in his eyes, you couldn't stop yourself from throwing your arms around him. God, I missed you so much... you thought silently, while you struggled to pull yourself out of his embrace. When the hug ended, you were both a little awkward, unsure how to start a new conversation. In the end it was him, ever considerate, who finally said, "Come on, let's go to our usual place."
You can barely remember the drive to the restaurant, or what happened over dinner. All you remember was that feeling, welling up from somewhere deep inside. When you saw him, when you talked to him, when you simply sat beside him, you realized you might have missed him even more than you'd thought. And by the time dinner was over, you could no longer act like you were still thinking of him as a friend. The words slipped out before you could stop them: "Let's never be apart again."
Fraser had been quietly sulked all evening over your silence, but the moment he heard you say that, he reckoned you'd both been thinking about the same thing through the entire dinner. "Was it just as hard for you since i left home?” He looked at you, cheeks flushed, waiting for your answer. "Yes... It wasn't until you left that I realized how important you are to me. You're not just a good friend to me anymore. I... I want us to be closer than that."
He looked at you with that familiar gaze, gentle and focused, but this time there was something more in it. He leaned in for a long-awaited kiss and murmured, "Yes... let's be the closest we can ever be."
