what if three months into the summer and i already missed you like i missed my childhood. what if i drive around my hometown and hang around old and new friends and all i can think about is whether you’d like this cafe, you’d love this lake— you love lakes, you love ponds, love the ocean. if you can’t walk on water you’d dunk yourself in it, salt water or sweet water, so i’ll bring you to the most beautiful one i have kept for myself. i’d tell you about the lake history, maybe, if i remember whatever dada told me when i was eight. but then, maybe all the history it contains is the three times i swam in it prior to meeting you. i’d tell you about how bright summer used to feel when i was eight, how i pretended to catch the sunlight falling through the leaves like they are gold floating on water, and how i learned how to swim here, was goaded into letting go of the floaties and discovered that i can swim. i’d tell you all about it, in between splashing you with lake water and watch it beads on skin tanner than i remembered, thinking about how sweet lake water is compare to the sea— how sweet is your skin after soaking up all that sunlight?— maybe your eyes are as blue as clear water because you love it so much. maybe, like mama said, my eyes are as green as leaves in the summer, it keeps you young and dreamful. all the golden dreams are in his eyes, mama. maybe, i’m lucky that water freezes to ice. i’d see you skating on a little pond and we can skate all winter long, skate all the way into summer, skate falling into the lake with our dreams intact, because they are in your eyes like the sunlight. i’ll believe anything if i see it in your eyes.
