Something familiar about him.
@eternalnull Starter call
Lyra was tired, no, she was bone-deep exhausted. The last train ride out from Saffron to Goldenrod had been a red-eye and though she was used to these kinds of trips, it was still taking a toll on her body.

Gladion was knee deep buried in paperwork. After a business meeting with the Silph Company, he had received a call from a man named Bill. Bill was a pokemon researcher and developer best known for developing the PC system. He was also the man that was helping his mother recuperate. He had called to ask a favor of Gladion, something about retrieving something from his family home into Goldenrod that would help his mother. While taking a break from the long and grueling train ride, he set up temporary camp in the waiting room and dove head first into his paperwork. At first he was numb to the world surrounding him, but a pair of eyes began to burn in the side of his head. Instinctively turned to the direction the stare was coming from and made eye contact with a young woman who stared blatantly back at him. Her gaze was more nostalgic than anything, like she was recalling an old memory. Purposely or not, Gladion didn’t appreciate her staring and snapped at the strange girl.
“Is it Johto courtesy to stare at strangers or do you just not have any manners?”
You have to love somebody that much to also hate them that much, too.

I Believe It’s Time for A Promotion|| Gladion & Greyson
eternalnull:
Gladion sized up the older male, and watched as he glanced back at his team awkwardly. Clearing his throat, he opened the file he was holding and shuffled through the papers until he came across the most recent research summary this department had sent him. He didn’t have any problems with their work, on the contrary, Greyson’s work was detailed and even an idiot could tell how passionate he was about rehabilitating pokemon from reading his notes. The researched apologized and Gladion waved his hand dismissively and walking towards the vending machine with him.
Walking towards the vending machine with his boss, Greyson did not break eye contact. He tried his best to show the other that he wasn’t nervous, though, the little sweat bubbles on his forehead said something different. With the question asked, the male shook his head, “I am not busy. I just gave my team a small break, since I felt we accomplished a lot today.” He smiled, watching the other put change into the machine and punching in the call code for the treat.
After the President was done, Greyson did the same. He put what change he had in his pocket and punched in the call code for a lemonade. He repeated the process for a Lava Cooke. Though, he wasn’t necessarily hungry, having a small snack during break would help him in the long run – until it was time for dinner.
“It won’t take up much time, I just have a couple of questions.”
Greyson looked around. This didn’t sound that good, and Greyson was preparing mentally for whatever followed. What could Gladion be question? Was there a typo in the report that Greyson forgot to edit out? Was the format not what the President wanted? All these questions flooded his head, but there was only one way to find out what the other wanted to ask.
“I’m all ears, sir.”
Looking at him closely, Gladion initially assumed that he succeeded on sounding casaul to avoid Greyson becoming nervous. Then he had realized it had the opposite effect and the poor man had broke into a cold sweat. Nice one Gladion, you just made it worse. Quickly, to put Greyson’s concerns at rest and because it was easier for Gladion, he went straight to the point.
“You’re aware that after becoming President, I’ve had each lead researcher and their team submit activity reports. It’s my way of keeping an eye on expenditure and making sure there isn’t anyone left from my mother’s reign.” Reign. What a way to put it. Gladion leaned against the corridor, showing a nonchalant, relaxed posture and broke their eye contact to unwrap his rage bar. There was a silent moment as he heard Greyson’s breath pick up and the wrapper crinkling as opened his treat. Returning his gaze back to Greyson, he mused to himself. He wanted to let the team know that he had been impressed with everything they had accomplished, without it sounding like a lavish compliment that his mother would have given. The very thought sent a subtle shudder down his spine. He decided he’d put it bluntly. Blunt was good. Blunt was what Gladion did best.
“I’ve been keeping an eye on your team for the past three months. Your team is the most efficient and adaptable. I want to offer you an upgrade, I’ve cleared the labs my mother had constructed secretly downstairs strictly for the use of helping pokemon.” His voice was sharp now, a steel blade ready to cut anyone down if they dared to argue with him. “My goal for Aether Foundation is for it to become a proper rehabilitation center. I can only do that by putting people I can trust into key positions.” He paused before continuing, standing up straight as he observed Greyson closely. He couldn’t understand what compelled Gladion to trust this man, but with the research he’s produced, there was no mistaking he truly cared about Pokemon with no ulterior motives. Blunt Gladion, let’s go for blunt. Faba had been demoted and somebody needed to take his place. Somebody he could trust.
“I’m asking if you’d like to be promoted to Branch Chief.”

((yoUNG MAN)“...You’re a sad man...” He stood silently, staring in exasperation.“That’s pretty rough buddy, but that doesn’t help me guess shit.” He gave a vague shrug and decided to throw out the names that came to mind.“Giovanni? Proton? Nanu, do you need more cats? Kuku- nah...Lapdog?”

“Wow, such a detailed description, thank you so much.” He internally groaned and began to go through the list of people he has had the unfortune of meeting.“A boy, but also a man…” That crossed off the females, and the elder generation. Shorter than some at least crossed one giant scumbag tree off his list.“You wear clothes, so definitely not Kukui.” There was only two people that came to mind, and he struggled to pick which one to guess. Releasing a deep sigh, he rolled his eyes and quipped.“Do you also have daddy problems and an outdated mullet? What’s your name again…Platinum? No, Sterling? nah. Oh, right. Silver?”

Condemned ║ Guzma & Gladion
The route leading to Po Town was just as desolate as the town itself. It was dark, grim, and cursed with unending rainfall. Puddles of stagnant water scattered the route as the saturated earth struggled to retain it. Mudslides were common: the rocky mountain path to the east yielded to the pelting downpour and sent many unsuspecting Trainers and Pokémon to their doom. Because of its dire weather, the route saw hardly any traffic. Guzma was just fine with that. The only people who needed to be there were members of his former crew and the island’s kahuna.
He’d liked the area, once. He’d reveled in the fact that Skull’s reputation preceded them, that they’d terrified the nearby residents enough that they steered clear of the town and Route 17 and left them well enough alone. Even the police force couldn’t touch them—they’d split along with the townspeople. All that left was Nanu, and he’d come later. But that was so long ago. Guzma shifted the umbrella as the rain changed directions, plunging his free hand into the pocket of his hoodie.
When his crew first ‘conquered’ Po Town, they’d made it their castle, using its massive, impenetrable walls to keep society out. And with his makeshift throne and his loyal followers, he was their king. It was his word that was law, and his word that made their lives better than it was before. Guzma led himself to believe that he belonged in Po Town. But being so close to it now, it didn’t feel like home anymore. It was a massive, hulking reminder of things he would rather forget.
Excess rain splattered on his stark-white sneakers. This rain had never been good for his threads. He knocked on the door, as politely as the old cop had told him to do, and waited. He stared at the door for what seemed like ten minutes, but an answer never came. Maybe he was in the back messing with his Meowth. Guzma frowned. “OI! Pops! S’rainin’ like shit out here, lemme in!” he shouted, pounding his free fist on the metal doors. He tugged on the door handles, but they were locked tight. Nanu wasn’t home. Guzma scowled, dissatisfied, and moved away. He told himself he hadn’t wanted to see the old kahuna that badly, anyway.
Guzma trudged down the path leading south, away from the looming walls of Po Town, his thoughts elsewhere. He made sure to keep out of the wall’s line of sight just in case he was seen. If any of his old crew still lived there, they’d be sure to go after him. The phone in his pants pocket vibrated, breaking Guzma out of his brooding. He knew who it was before he checked it. It bothered him that Plumeria kept messaging him in spite of his silence. In her message, she told him she wouldn’t quit on him. A small part of him wanted to reply back, to tell her that this was for her own good, but another part held him back. It was better to cut all ties, to rip it off quick like a Band-Aid, and get all the hurts done and over with before you had a chance to change your mind. Nanu had told him that.
He put his phone back in his pocket. She still didn’t get it. This wasn’t the first time she’d messaged him, nor was it the first time he’d ignored her. When he first disbanded Team Skull and left without looking back, she’d messaged him, confused. And when he didn’t reply, Plumeria messaged him again, cursing and angry and telling him that he had no right. It was her team as much as his. But as the days went on of more silence, she messaged him again, this time offering explanations. And the time after that, promises of continued friendship.
And now she tells him that she still waited for him, just like a few members of the old crew waited for him in Po Town. Guzma didn’t know what to think. The subject wrapped his stomach in iron chains, twisting it tighter and tighter until he was as mutilated as his own warped emotions. He’d rid himself of Skull—he’d once fancied himself destruction in human form, but it was his crew that destroyed him. The old cop had told him so. The branching, bloodred scars on his shoulders and neck twinged in response, almost in agreement with the thought.
Guzma rubbed his burning shoulder. She’d be better off without him. The weather cleared as he left Route 17 behind, transitioning from a dreary grey into brilliant, cheery sunshine. Ula’ula’s meadow welcomed him with the sweet scent of its blossoming red flowers. Guzma put his umbrella away and stashed it in the hollow at the base of a nearby tree. The hollow contained other items from his past visits, and others still from members of his crew who’d used it before him. He left them alone and continued on his way.
He knew his trip back to Melemele Island would be a long one. Guzma made it to Nanu’s house in record time—he traveled as fast as he could manage while still keeping his cool and nonchalant façade. Old man Hala would wait for him, and now that his visit was cut short, he had no reason to hurry back. He walked along the wooden bridge, slouching and keeping his eyes lowered as he passed people taking a tour around the meadow. Their gaze was prying and suspicious. Guzma shoved his hands into the pockets of his hoodie and ignored their stares.
But there was one person who caught his attention. Standing at the edge of a bridge was a young man with blond hair looking over a small section of the meadow. Guzma didn’t notice anything of overwhelming importance there, just the same red flowers and wandering tourists searching desperately for the flamenco-dancing Oricorio. Guzma knew the kid by sight. There was no one, save for himself, who held such an intense stare.
Guzma’s memories were fuzzy of the day prior to his entering Ultra Space. What was said, what was done, they were scattered in bits and pieces, with some memories being hazier than others. He was certain he’d seen the kid outside of Aether’s base. An image flickered in his mind, one of anguish and one of maniacal laughter. He couldn’t remember what came next, but he remembered that Gladion was her son.
He clenched his jaw, images of her face popping into his mind, a waking nightmare. Inside his hoodie, Guzma clenched his hands, his fingernails digging into the scarred flesh of his palms. The bitch had a way of inciting him to do anything at her command—and even now, he was forced to suffer memories that he wished to forget. Guzma grit his teeth and drove them out.
He found himself staring at the kid’s torn sleeves. He moved closer, his hands deep in his pockets and his posture poor as ever. Reliving those moments took more out of him than he cared to admit.
“Ain’t nothin’ out that way, kid,” he said. His eyes flicked to the meadow and back to Gladion. Guzma didn’t know what compelled him to speak. He should have kept walking, but it was too late now. If he was lucky, the kid wouldn’t want to chat. “Them flowers ain’t gonna do you no good.”
Gladion hadn’t meant to come back here. Po-Town brought bitter memories to mind, memories that he’d rather forget. After weeks of being cooped up in his office, going over proposals and finances for Aether Foundation, he found himself craving fresh air and the excitement of traveling. He wouldn’t be able to travel, but he did have an excuse to leave the stuffy research facility. Po-town had become a project of the sorts for Aether Paradise, the plan was to have members restore the town back to it’s former glory for the residence and hopefully some pocket money, but first it had to be scoped out. They had to see how many misfits from Team Skull still lurked in the area. Gladion decided to take this job upon himself, having gone stir-crazy.
When he arrived, he scoffed at how little it had changed from his last visit. The walls were still covered in graffiti, trash littered the ground and the buildings were demolished, falling apart on top of each other. There were a few grunts left, the majority of them looking lost and shaken. Upon seeing them Gladion shook his head in disappointment. With a tired sigh, he exited the dreary town, passing Nanu’s house and trudged towards the route exiting the town. He found himself standing at the edge, gazing off into a crimson meadow, memories flashing through his mind, back to when he first escaped from Aether House. He had hidden in this meadow with Type: Null for days until he joined Team Skull.
An Unlikely Alliance

He almost couldn’t believe it. Out of all the people, he would have never pegged Nanu as an interpol agent of all things. Especially one that specialized in UB investigations. The most Gladion knew about Nanu was that he was a formidable opponent. Before he had found out that Nanu sported the title of Kahuna, which hadn’t been anticipated either, he had battled him once when he had first escaped from Aether Paradise. Then there was how Nanu handled Team Skull, Gladion couldn’t decide if Nanu was incredibly lenient with the delinquent group or he genuinely didn’t care. There had been an unspoken rule among the grunts though, if you messed with Nanu you’d regret it.
In conclusion, Gladion had assumed that Nanu was merely a powerful and lient authority figure, One that constantly surrounded himself with cat pokemon and enjoyed cheap rent. So when Gladion had met up with the looker and anabel at the pokemon center cafe for futher information on the UB, he hadn’t envisaged returning to Po-town to ask Nanu, the former interpol agent 000 and leader on the UB investigation for help. Arceus, the old man was just full of surprise.
As he got closer, he couldn’t help but release a snort of amusement. Po-town hadn’t changed at all despite the disbandment of Team Skull. The town was still pouring rain over the gloomy rooftops and trash littered the ground. Gladion traversed quickly, picking his way through the long grass patches with his gaze set on the police station. He was greeted by a several soaking meowth, the felines creature weaved between his legs and purred happily as he bent down to scratch their ears. He cradled one of the silver felines and grabbed the brass doorknob, not bothering to knock as he slammed the front door open.
The meowth he was holding leaped from his arms and unto table, letting out a shrill greeting to the other felines dominating the room. There was no other way to describe it really, Gladion had never seen this many meowth in one place.
His attention leaped to the elderly Kahuna, having woken from his dramatic entrance. He pushed the door closed with the back of his foot and stalked towards Nanu with an intense gaze. His palms were resting on his hips as he glared down at the confused man, completely lost at how to approach the subject. If what Looker had told him was true, this could be a very touchy subject for Nanu. “Nanu, I need your help. Looker told me you lead the UB mission in the past. I need to compare notes with you, see if you have anything I don’t already know.”
His arms fell to his side and his gaze bore into the man before him.
“Please.”
Po Town these days had been quiet. Only a few former members of Team Skull still populated the town, leaving Nanu with a peace he had once thought he’d never get. There was so much less to worry about nowadays. It almost seemed like the world’s way of thanking him for putting up with Po Town for so long. He’d take it over any sort of excitement or trouble any day. He was a man of the law at heart, but it did not having to be happy when trouble reared its ugly head.
The morning had been like any other. The rain came down just as consistently as ever. The Meowth ignored it, spending their time meandering about the station. Nanu sat on the couch besides Persian, who took up a majority of the space. He didn’t mind any. He leaned comfortably against his partner Pokemon. There was no sound except for the occasional mews of Meowth and the patter of rain outside.
Then came the noise. The door of the police station was flung open without care. Standing in the doorway was a young man Nanu had not seen for some time. Gladion. His time in Team Skull had been odd. He was the “enforcer” of the group, although no members seemed to formally recognize his place. He, like many others who associated with Team Skull, had quickly learned to not mess with Nanu. So for that, Nanu could never complain. Gladion dealt with his business without causing too much trouble. He, on the whole, was tolerable.
Since the events at the Aether Paradise had gone down, Gladion had moved on from Team Skull. Nanu respected that— after all, what was the point of staying in a group like that? He had responsibilities, far beyond what a kid like him would normally deal with. But Gladion, as far as Nanu had seen, took it in stride. For that, he thought he’d never see the young man near Po Town ever again.
Gladion strode forward, further into the police station. He did not speak immediately, seemingly searching for words. Nanu said nothing as he waited in anticipation of whatever was about to come out of this kid’s mouth. Then, Gladion spoke. As Nanu listened to him talk, he internally groaned. Looker had just up and told him about his ties to Interpol and his connection to the Ultra Beasts? Surely there was some protocol he was breaking… not that it mattered now. The truth was now revealed and there was little he could do.
Nanu did not respond instantly as he mulled over what he had just heard. He glanced down to Persian, who still lay comfortably beside him. He slowly inhaled, then exhaled, and glanced back up to Gladion.
“…it’s too late to say I have no idea what you’re talking about, isn’t it?” Nanu asked. “Of course it is. You’re already here. But I don’t know why you need to be stickin’ your nose into that kind of business. I know all about what went down at that company o’ yours, but we contained ‘em all, didn’t we? Far as I know.”
Nanu paused. He knew that Gladion wouldn’t be likely to leave so easily. He’d come all this way to ask about it, and the kid knew that he knew about the Ultra Beasts. True, there was plenty that only a select few knew about the creatures. It had been kept pretty strictly under wraps. Interpol never wanted to start a panic with anybody, and if the public knew that creatures from alternate dimensions were appearing all over the world, well… that would spell out a lot of problems for them.
Nanu did admire Gladion’s attempt to find out more. It had been partially his mother’s mess that resulted in all this resumed Ultra Beast activity. Perhaps if he just gave him the information he needed, the young man would be on his way in no time. Nanu sighed deeply, leaning back on the couch. He gestured towards the chair sitting at his desk across the room. “You might wanna grab a chair. We better find out what you know and what you don’t know so we can get this done and I can be on my way to peace and quiet again, all right?”
Just as he suspected, Nanu seemed reluctant. When the retired interpol advised that Gladion shouldn’t be “sticking his nose” into the UB situations, he opened his mouth to retaliate. He needed to know more. He needed to learn everything. The information was vital to do what Lusamine failed to achieve. Part of him realised that the path he was going down seemed an awful lot like Lusamine’s, but unlike her, he knew the precautions he had to face. He wouldn’t be stupid enough to open Ultra Space or summon UB to reach his goals. He just wanted to know about the people who went into Ultra Space and to protect the region from these otherworldly creatures.
Then the Kahuna paused and let out a prolonged sigh, causing Gladion to inquisitively arch a brow. The old Kahuna gave him the incentive to take a seat and relief washed over Gladion. He was finally getting somewhere again, and the thought of potentially new information that would come from Nanu sent his heart racing in anticipation. He turned to sit on the chairs opposite of the couch and suspended in place. The multiple meowth's stared up at him sharply, daring him to just try and move them. He sighed and turned back to Nanu, plopping on the ground and mumbling under his breath, “This is why I’m a dog person”. He returned his gaze back to Nanu, pulling his knees up to his chest and wondered whereto begin. There was also the information about his partner pokemon, something he didn’t disclose to just anyone. Deciding the best place to start reiterating was the findings of his father and the research Aether left behind.

🤗 "Ugh. You look like a lost puppy. Come here." What she meant was, 'you look like Silver, a boy I care very much about.' And she pulled him into a tight-armed hug.
Who the hell is this intimidating woman and why was she hugging him? Her attitude and body figure reminded him of Kahuna Olivia. He nervously tried to pull out of the hug, but discovered that he couldn’t even budge an inch. Damn this lady has some arm strength. Figuring that if he recuperated the hug, she’d let go sooner, he nervously lifted his arms and paused with them mid air. Where do I put my arms and hands? This is why I should have never left my office, damn it. Very lightly, he placed his hands on her mid back and steeled his voice to the best of his ability, using his authoritative President voice.“Excuse me, Miss? I’d appreciate it if you let me go. I’m not sure who you are, but I really would prefer if you didn’t touch me.”
🤗 (time for the most awkward hug ever done)
What. What was happening? Gladion stood stock still, confusion and a sudden need for space filling him. Nanu had just leaned over, straight-faced, and pulled Gladion into a hug. The meowth Gladion had been cradling purred in delight at it’s owners touch and snuggled between them. Gladion cleared his throat uneasily and patted Nanu on the back.“....Um...Nanu...Let go, please?”
🤗 Mohn grin hugely. "Well alola!" he says, wrapping Gladion in a hug. "Nice to see another face 'round these parts! Kinda far from the mainland, aren't we?"
Gladion felt his world collapse around him. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe anymore, his entire body turning frigid.
