“Are you unable to get more?”
“They wouldn’t even let me set foot in the hospital when I tried to go see someone about it.”
tgamache:
“Everything?”
“I really need something. I ran out of meds last week and it’s killin’ me.”
stgamache:
“Ouch. I hope that doesn’t hurt as bad as it looks.”
“I can’t even feel it. Not specifically. At this point everything just hurts.”

“C’mon, Ethan,” Valerie replied, chuckling as he pointed out the obvious. She nudged his thigh with her socked foot, smirking as she did so. “It’ll be even warmer if we got our body heat together and stuff. It’s totally legit, man.”
Ethan made a face, wondering if she heard herself sometimes. She sounded like a bad indie song featured on college radio stations. He picked up one of the dogs that was cuddled up to his side and moved them onto the heap of blanket that Val was under. “He’ll keep you warm. He’s been storing fat for the winter.” Ethan insisted.Â

Valerie liked living with Ethan. As much as she liked Chris, and how much fun they had together, the blonde really liked being able to just relax and not worry about anything with Ethan. There were no crazy angels or demons or whatever they were trying to lock Ethan up, she didn’t have to worry about finding him chained up to some radiator or getting cussed out by someone just by wanting to be around him. It didn’t help that he was cute. And a total jerk sometimes.
She sat on his couch, wrapping herself tightly in the blanket that was there. “Oh my gosh, Ethan. I swear my fingers are gonna fall off or something,” Valerie whined, smile still on her face. “You should cuddle with me so I don’t freeze to death. I totally deserve it, you know it.”
Ethan was still getting used to having a roommate living with him. It wasn’t something he was sure he ever would get used to. It was nice in some ways... and irritating in others.Â
He was sitting on the other side of the couch, looking over at her when she spoke. “You’re already hogging the whole blanket.” He pointed out. He was still wary of her when she wanted to be all touchy feely, wondering if she didn’t still think that he was just deeply closeted.

Watching the dog wiggle in the man’s arms, Alli giggled a little before standing up, keeping one hand on Diablo, but she held the other out to shake the man’s hand. “I’m Alli,” she finally introduced herself.
“Of course I can keep him,” she said immediately, heart melting a little bit as she looked down at Diablo. She missed Dante, so much. She was sure the dog did, too. Maybe her and Diablo could look after each other. “Listen um… there’s a diner just over there. It’s got outdoor seating. Can I buy you tea or breakfast or something? That way I can get some toast and bacon for this big guy here?” She fluffed the top of Dante’s head fondly as the dog stayed close to her side.
Ethan carefully moved the dog to his other arm, extending his hand to take Allison’s and shake it in return. “I’m Ethan.” He offered, his face relaxing into a smile as she no longer seemed afraid of him. He nodded, a wave of relief hitting him as she said that she could keep the dog. It was a relief knowing that he had already found a home for him, knowing that his apartment was too small to add another dog to it.Â
His gaze followed in the direction that she indicated. Ethan was never one to say no to food. “Yeah, definitely. I’m starving.” He hadn’t been until she mentioned food but now he was convinced that he was. And the Corkis never said no to snacks.

Alli looked around hesitantly, but they were in a pretty public area. There were plenty of people around. If he was the man who killed Dante, he wouldn’t do anything to her here. But she kept her arms around Diablo anyway. She felt like something in her was warm again, just having a piece of Dante with her. She kissed the top of the dog’s head before answering.
“Yeah,” she said quietly. “He- um…. I-” She took a shaky breath after her voice cracked to try and gather herself. “Yeah. His owner and I were close.” Diablo nudged her with his nose when she sniffed again and she scrunched the pup’s ears fondly. “You’re okay, baby. You’re okay,” she assured the dog. “He’s okay, right? I should take him to the vet or something. Is there even a vet still in Tilden?”
Ethan saw her look around, sensing that she might be uncomfortable. He leaned down to pick up one of the overweight Corkis, assuming that nothing could make him look less intimidating than a chubby dog trying to lick his face.Â
“I think so, yeah.” He nodded, refraining from telling her that he was sorry for her loss in regards to the dog’s owner who had been murdered. He felt bad, watching her make over the dog. “He seems okay. Probably just hungry. You can keep him?” Ethan asked hopefully.

Alli knew that it was probably not safe to be walking around by herself as much as she had been lately, but the weather was unseasonably sunny and mild and going out and trudging around Tilden was one of the small, small handful of things that let her forget for a little while.Â
It wasn’t long before she turned a corner and saw a man she didn’t really recognize, walking two corgis she didn’t recognize, and followed by a big grey mass of fur that she absolutely, positively did recognize.
“Diablo?” she called out, watching as the dog’s ears perked up and she dropped to her knees as the dog bounded over to her. She wrapped her arm around the husky, fingers going into his thick fur as his tail thumped and he wiggled excitedly in her arms. She nuzzled into his fur for a moment, not caring that a few tears fell into the fur above his collar.Â
“Oh, Diablo, baby,” she whispered. “I was so worried about you. Oh god. You’re okay, baby. You’re okay. You’re okay.” She repeated the phrase over and over, unsure if she was convincing the dog or herself at that point. She kissed the top of the dog’s head as the man who’d been walking with him caught up to them. She didn’t stand, didn’t want to let go of Diablo just yet.
“You found him?” she asked the man quietly, her voice cracking on the word, half-afraid that he might be the one who killed Dante. “Where was he?”
Ethan was trying to think of people he knew that might be willing to take the dog in, lost in thought when he heard someone call a name. He looked around, following the dog running to where a woman was calling for him. He watched for a moment as the woman held and talked to the dog, wondering if she maybe co-owned him with the dead man. He walked towards them , nodding as she asked if he had found the dog.
“Yeah. He just showed up here. I was walking my dogs.” He explained, never stopping to think that she might suspect him of having something to do with the owner’s murder. “You know him?” He guessed.

Ethan was walking his dogs down the beach, both of them off their leashes. He felt confident that despite his own issues he would be able to catch them if they decided to take off for some reason. They seemed happy enough though, waddling alongside the edge of the water with their sandy paws leaving a trail of tiny prints behind them. It was a nice morning, though the wind was cold coming off of the water. There was something comforting knowing that the water was coming in from outside of the barrier, reassurance that the outside world still existed there.Â
He saw a large grey dog step out of the weeds farther up on the beach, its approach hesitant as it came closer. Ethan slowed his steps, coming to a stop as he watched it. The dog didn’t appear hostile and once the Corkis noticed they both hurried over to greet him. Ethan watched the three of them, ready to step in and protect his short-legged dogs that were too chubby to really be considered able to defend themselves in any way. The three dogs all went about sniffing each other’s butts and seemed to be decidedly friendly after that, the much larger dog falling in with them.Â
Ethan stopped and crouched down, calling his dogs to him in the hopes that the other would follow. He did, and after a few moments he let Ethan reach out and touch him. Ethan pet the dog, talking to him in the hopes of getting a look at the tag hanging on his collar. Shivers ran down his spine when Ethan read the name engraved into the tag, recognizing it as one of the men that had been murdered. He scruffed the dog behind the ear, his brow furrowed with concern. He really couldn’t afford another dog, feeling weighed down with the responsibility of the two he had already. He decided that he would find it a good home, knowing that he couldn’t just leave the dog there. He stood and called for the dogs to follow him, heading back towards the way that they had come.

“Jersey. Is that New Jersey, the state? Or the isle of Jersey? Or one of the eight towns named Jersey in the United States? My favourite is in Licking County, Ohio. Oh. Is it like family?”
“Are you being a smartass?”
leklonthecurious:
“That must be nice. I wish I had a home. A real one. I’m beginning to realize my current living situation is somewhat lacking. Where did you live before?”
“I’m from Jersey, but I’ve traveled most of my adult life. I’m not- home is more of a feeling than a place for most people I think.”
valerie-shine:
“Are you bitter, Ethan?”
“About what?”
valerie-shine:
“It’s called organizing, man.”
“Is it, Val?”
valerie-shine:
“Man, I totally brighten up the place.”
“You’re keep moving my stuff and I can’t find anything.”
louisafletcher:
“I’m glad to hear it. Does that mean I might get to see past your surly exterior to your slightly less surly interior?”
“No.”
leklonthecurious:=
“What does home feel like?”
“I don’t really know how to explain it. I don’t think you can know until you’ve just felt it.”
“Right?”
“No thanks to you.”
