Okay, but also: if you see a Muslim praying in public and they have something in front of them, like a purse or a bag or something like that, you can pass in front of them, but pass in front of that object.

it’s called a sutrah, and it’s meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.

Also, if you did this and didn’t know, please don’t beat yourself up over it. Now you know! Muslims aren’t supposed to pass in front of Muslims praying, either, because prayer is communication with God and you don’t want to break that connection.

The Torchbearer counts.

Every day that he is separated from Clancy, he counts. He saw Clancy swerving in a car. Then he was gone. The tally starts. It ends over a year later, when Torch is looking down at Clancy in the valley. Then he’s being dragged back to the city slumped on the back of Nico’s horse.

Torch restarts the tally.

He knows when it will end this time, they have a rescue plan, the exact date that Clancy will be freed. He doesn’t know how long he’ll have with him. He doesn’t know when those dark hands will wrap around Clancy’s throat and pull him away again.

The tally restarts, and receives no respite for six years.

Torch learns not to count the days they do have together, because nothing can calm the pain in his heart when he realises that they spent more time apart than they ever did together. So when Clancy returns to the shores of Trench, Torch forgets the tally.

Despite the strain on their relationship, he does his best to enjoy the short time they have between reuniting and marching on the city. The late night fires, falling asleep in the same tent, staring out towards the city hand in hand.

Then they charge, and Clancy doesn’t come back.

Torch restarts the tally.
